"super" Pit Review

Hopeful

Recommended Posts

Well Hopeful, each has their own taste and opinions; but the Super Pit is one of the last things at NT athletes that I would complain about. It was close to the best arena in the state when build in the early seventies and while showing some age, it is far from second rate. Have you been to SMU or TCU or the late UTA arenas? A lot of it is personal taste, I for example like it better than USA or ULL's arenas which are offen cited as two of the best in the Belt. But I dislike the bright "McDonald's looking new designs", A lot of the darkness you complain about is do to to the dark green seating, no one complained about lighting when they were the hideous bright orange. Another factor is that unfortunately, most of the time the majority of those seats are in full view. I like the fact that the SP seats over 10k but it does not add to the atmosphere when most of those seats are unoccupied. The scoreboard situation has been discussed many times and is something most would liked changed. By the way, you must have a hell of a living room. Alas, thirty five years ago; they didn't envision hanging massive video boards in the center of the court. As far as the student spirit organizations, I would match them with most collegian teams. I really hope that the pep band is not dressed up in matching outfits a la SMU. I like the casual look.

I think the central scoreboard issue will eventually be addressed and probably at some point the SP will be renovated with suites and other "modern" enhancements. However, right now: NT has another small construction project to focus on.

Obviously we are going to just have to agree to disagree. Whatever the case, man for man, even girl for girl in my group all had the same opinion. Only half of us were UNT people, we werent real happy about it. One alum almost said tcu had a better arena after going out there to see Jimmer. That crap cant happen.

Obviously, we will indeed disagree, Champ. And TCU may have a better arena, Sport, but they sure as hell don't have a better team.

For what it's worth, my dad and I sat at the very top of the arena for the second half of the women's game vs. Denver (just for the heck of it) last Saturday, and it appears that the same types of lights they use to light the court (maybe not the same wattage) are all the way around the "upper deck" as well. They were all turned off. I didn't notice it at the time, but those lights were turned on when George Bush spoke at UNT the night after the TT game in November. The Super Pit was very bright, and looked extremely good.

i sugested to rv several years ago that we "cover" the upper deck during games to reduce seating and make the arena more intimate, but quite honestly he had bigger fish to fry. i don't know what cost would be, but it would bring fans closer together.

The band is light years (spirit wise) from what it was years ago. At one time, the band didn't act like they wanted to be at games.....now they do. (and have for all the years I've been back in the area---since 2007). As a matter of fact....I think the band gets credit for the Odufu-who? Odufu-wa! line....which is one of the best chants we've had in years.

So, I'll stick up for the band. And I think the Super Pit is still one great arena. I do agree that some minor changes could make it better.

I doubt Hopeful looked through older threads to find any discussions.

I'm sure that's the case. Just wanted to point it out. I really don't want this board devolving into the football forum where the same topics get discussed ad nauseum.

Super Pit improvements has the potential to turn into one of the ultimate crotch kick topics.

Covering the top is not an idea I am on board with. The last couple games my wife and I moved to an upper section and were pleased with what we found. With the seats being so tight, we weren't cramped and the view was still exceptional. The lighting did hamper my photo taking though.

Nothing wrong with the pep band and atmosphere. My sister- and brother-in-law joined us (thanks ice game) and had a great time. They got a kick out of the band and loved the excitement, even for a "blow out". It was so enjoyable they want to come back next year.

I hope not, nothing looks worse than cov ered seating. Besides there are a few people that sit up there, probably more this year than I can remember.

This needed a new thread since we haven't already discussed potential Super Pit improvements this season?

Gagree. All of the improvements we would like to see were discussed. Also, if Hopeful had done a little research on the Pit he would know that the major hurdle in improving it is that the athletic department doesn't control the arena. It is controlled by the University, as there are classroms in the tunnels and most major University events are held there, so the AD can't just make whatever changes they want whenever they want to. If they could I'm sure at least some of the improvements would have already been made. And finally, if Hopeful had attended the Tech game, like 7,000+ of us did, he would know that the Pit can be an amazing atmosphere.

All I've ever heard about the super pit from people who know what they are talking about is how there isn't a bad seat in the house, and it's a great place to catch a basketball game.

TCU sold out it's game vs BYU, so that could be why you thought that place was okay and a lot of it's piss poor layout was undiscovered to you.

I went to the men's senior game this weekend and lets just say I was less than impressed. Way less. What is up with the lighting in that place? It is awful! I felt like I was in a basement. That needs to be fixed immediatley. Next, the band was sloppy and embarrassing. Is it too much to ask that they be required to wear the same t-shirt or polo? They looked second-rate and I felt they were a poor reflection of the university. They also didnt didnt do a very good job at being a band, especially for a bball game. Also, the cheerleaders could use some work as well. They dont do much, and they didnt seem very interested in being there. Another disapointment. Next was the missing jumbotron. That was funny. Instead theres a nice coke sign, and a "video board" in the corner thats smaller than the TV in my living room. That was embarassing as well. I know this is a money issue, but come on. Also what in the hell is that weird chipmunk dressed up like fantasia? That was weird.

Overall, the atmosphere and game presentation at the basketball game was a joke. Not a lot there to bring fans back. Yes we kicked the crap out of Denver, but Im not talking about that right now. Im talking about how our school compares to other schools. At bball games its second-rate. Sorry its the truth. Its time for the others involved in UNT bball to catch up to what Johnny Jones has been doing. Just n observation from a fan who knows what hes talking about.

Sounds like Scotty here has had his brain scrambled by the Idiocracy of the AAC and every other NBA arena these days. Listen brah, the Pit is a great place to watch a college basketball game. If you and your homies need more lightning strikes, dancing bears, and basketball dribbling strippers I hear the D-league team up in Frisco brings the heat. Thanks for your opinion bud.

Dude its two-levels, with suites, with awesome windows, and a video board. I know usc isnt a basketball school but the arenas arent close. That doesnt matter though. Thats not realistic for UNT. Im talking about what is. And if you live in LA it may have been awhile since youve been to the pit. Im alost certain that they have put in those "green" incandescant lights that look like that.

Still got a lot of catching up to do... But as far as the part in bold goes, so does Texas Southern.

And who in the world is "Hopeful"? The Coliseum has been around for 4 decades. And this guy manages to get in for the last game of the season ? I've seen as many NT basketball games as anyone my age and I've never heard anyone, fan, coach, player, mdeia writer, anyone mention the lighting. Who is this guy ?

Cool a troll!

As someone who has taken photos in the Super Pit, I must say the lighting is fine. Pay a visit to SMU, Rice or Sam Houston if you want to see horrible lighting.

Seriously people just ignore the troll.

This.

I think this guy is just laughing at the fact that he got this thread to four pages. He lost all credibility when he said Daniel-Meyer Coliseum in FW is nicer than the Super Pit. Talk about a dump of a place. I grew up there and it is not anything close to nice. I cannot imagine the look on Jim Boeheim's face or Rick Pitino's face when they have to go play conference games there. Maybe they can just get Jamie Dixon's perspective before they go--after all, that place (except for the painted seats) is just about the same as it was 25 years ago when Jamie was hitting half-court shots to beat Texas.

One of my favorite parts of the pit this year was Josh White's grandmother (i think that was the relationship)... She might have been our best fan.

After the first game I thought she was going to drive me crazy with the constant screaming but I got used to it by game 2. In fact, I know I'm going to miss it next year. I'd rather RV fund Josh's family with season tickets than get new lighting.
