Big East deal could be worth as little as $60 million per year

Big East primary TV rights deal might be worth only $60 million-$80 million per year, multiple sources have told CBSSpports.com.

It is believed that the league went into negotiations estimating its rights' worth as significantly higher than $100 million per year.

It is no secret that the league's existence might hinge on that value of that TV deal. It is known that Houston has a provision in its pending deal with the Big East that it can get out of its agreement without penalty if certain revenue projections aren't achieved.

Each incoming Big East member has negotiated its own deal regarding conference withdrawl, sources told CBSSports.com

For example, Boise State can reduce its buyout to leave the Big East if there is a drop of 25 percent in current aggregate total revenue. Also, Boise State can have that fee reduced if less than 70 percent of the new TV contract goes to football. Houston, San Diego State, Boise State and SMU, among others, enter the Big East on July 1. Commissioner Mike Aresco said TV negotiations are ongoing and put no date on their completion.

The league recently moved quickly to add Tulane and East Carolina after losing Rutgers and Louisville. That gives the league 15 football-playing schools when Navy joins in 2015. Using the figures described above, that would mean the average payout per school of $4 million-$5.3 million per year.

This part is REALLY interesting:

"CBSSports.com reported earlier that Big East members were told by former commissioner John Marinatto that a new contract would be worth $10 million-$20 million more (per year per school) than what the Big East is currently getting. That was before instability and defections affected the conference."

This feels like week old news. When the Big East lost Rutgers and Louisville, then immediately added Tulane and ECU, it signaled that the TV deal numbers had come in and were much lower than promised. The Big East WILL swallow up the old CUSA. It remains to be seen if Tulsa and UTEP head out west, or join them. Either way, CUSA will be nothing more than the old Sun Belt after the 2013 season.

Which is why we should be on our knees begging the MWC for admittance before Houston, smu, Boise and SDSU head back west. Probably too late since they already see the writing on the wall.

Well at least this saves me from buying season tickets.

Don't they also have to share at least a part of that with the seven non-football institutions? If basketball gets 30% that would reduce the amount to roughly $3.2 - 4.1 million each. Note: Sorry, I included Boise and San Diego in the basketball payout; they would acturally get less and the other members slightly more.

This game of musical chairs is silly. I know we are all freaking out about who we are aligning ourselves with, but after it all shakes out we will still be building a power program in the middle of DFW. Go beat programs we need to beat and go bowling. Have some fun, hit some tailgates, take some roadies and grow our attendance. The goals haven't really changed at all. Oh yeah and Beat La Tech!

People keep saying the Big East will take more from CUSA, but who would they take. The Big East needs big market teams that can deliver their market to add value to the tv deal. I'm not sure there are any teams left on the expansion list that meet both of those criteria.

I hope the ACC delivers the death blow to the Big East and takes UConn and CIncy. That should be enough to send Boise & SDSU back to the MWC. Everyone left in the Big East would come home to CUSA 3 ring circus.

CUSA West: UTEP, Tulsa, UNT, SMU, UTSA, Houston, Rice, LA Tech,

CUSA South: Tulane, S Miss, UAB, FIU, FAU, USF, UCF, +1(GA St)

CUSA East: MTSU, Memphis, , Temple, Marshal, ODU, UNC-C, ECU, +1(WKY, or MAC team)

7 Divisional games, 2 non-divional games, 3 OOCs.

Semifinal conference championship tournament with divisional champs and a wild card.

Good lord, we're NOT coming back to C-USA. EVER. That was clear when they added UNT and UTSA.

If the Big East loses one or two higher profile schools the basketball schools will dissolve and reform. From what I understand, it is harder to start a new football conference so yes rejoining CUSA is plausible. You should hope and pray the Big 10 doesn't take UConn or ACC take Cincy etc... No one here wishes anything bad for Houston. There is no more auto bid so we are in the same boat. Bowing up against us is silly.

New article about the Big East. Until July 1st the baseketball schools have enough votes to pull away but retain the conference name and tournament money - assuming Temple doesn't have a vote about membership issues which is questionable. If I was one of those basketball schools (Marquette, DePaul, St. John's, Georgetown, Providence, Seton Hall and Villanova) I would do just that instead of having such a far flung conference and having to split the money too many ways.
