UNT Police

For real! Absolutely ridiculous!! Make them wait in traffic like the rest of us! I don't care if their crammed in there in full uniforms. I don't care that it might disrupt their gameday routine. I don't care that it's time that they would waste. Hell, make them walk! They're young and capable of it. Think of it as a way for them to warm up.

It was really dangerous...and not sure how legal it is, could be big lawsuits if they cause a accident...they were going at 70mpg in a 60, and sometimes less zone as well..It was concerning to me, just interested in how others might feel.

It wasn't UNT. They stay at the Mariott out by TMS. It was UTEP. By the way, this is a common practice at EVERY NCAA school and has been that way forever, not just the last 10 years.

Yeah guys, this is correct...While it does seem like a waste of money to some of you, you really gotta think about it from the school's point of view. UNT (and probably many other Div 1 Programs) have the team stay together at a hotel the night before a game. *(Yes, even home game) It's not a matter or luxury as much as security. Think about it...UNT has a nuge game on Saturday...What would likely happen if you let 120 college guys run free the night before the game, and just told them to show up at stadium a couple of hours before game time? It would be a logistical nightmare. A huge percentage of those kids would go party, and show up late. Having them in an offsite hotel the night before ensures everyone is accounted for. In addition, WHILE all of them are the hotel, they all meet the night before and during the day for team meetings, go over film, etc etc. (Basically, watch the "Beyond the Green" stories...You'll see the team going through preparations at the hotel conference centers the night before and the day of the game. Now, I cant speak to the fact that the busses were driving fast and/or dangerous. If that's really the issue, someone should say something. But I do feel it's justified to have the team "sequestered" offsite 36 hours prior to the game to make sure EVERYONE is accounted for, so we don't have a panic of "OMG has anyone heard from Chancellor today????????? Well, I guess he'll be at the stadium by game time...Hopefully...".

nothing wrong with getting away for a hotel stay for team concentration/comraderie...my issue is the funds for the state troopers that accompany the coaches on the road for 'protection'...all the cash that's spent on their hotels/meals/extra pay so that the coach can appear important enough to have state troopers on the sidelines with them... but, i hate that many elected officials have drivers or other security detail to make them feel important...

Every team does this. I think some on here think of us as little

old N T S U, but we are now a legit division 1 team that is bowl

eligable so why should we not act like it. I was so proud of the

Team, the crowd , and the way we presented ourself to everyone

on T V Sat. My cousin down south watched the game and was

very impressed with the way we looked Sat.

Yes like DT90 said this is a common practice for most every football program. At the 2010 Army game I tried to keep up with the team buses as they left the hotel. Impossible to keep close as the police did block the intersections plus I was not at liberty to blow thru the red lights like they did.

To take it a step further I attended the 2009 UNT game at Alabama and stayed at the team hotel in Birmingham. I left the hotel to drive the 60 miles to Tuscaloosa before the team buses left. There was an accident on the highway and the traffic was stopped to a standstill. Shortly thereafter I saw the Alabama Highway Patrol escort the team buses on the shoulder of the road to get past the stopped traffic and the accident scene.

Coaches security- Coaches can select their own security team and they pay for it or is part of thier compensation. When I was at A&M, Jackie Sherrill's security was a Pittsburg (as in Pennsylvania) Police Department Sergeant.

UNT police escorted the team all the way to Ruston and back. All police escorts (UNT, State Poilce or City Police) are paid for by the Athletic Department as part of the travel expenses. Those officers are not free.

Just a big watse of money, something most of the programs need; but must be done to keep up with everyone else.

Was not done in the past, but then most players lived in dorms.

High school players and players of other collegian sports can manage to play without outside lodging at home games but the football team can't.

A math class used this logic to get a free hotel the night before a final. The administration just laughed.

I got a -1 for that comment!? Being upset about this is ridiculous. As others have stated, that line of thinking is old school, little ol unt, aww shucks. Sometimes I just don't get you people.

ha...i've got ya beat on the negatives!!

my complaint is on the blatant waste of taxpayers/donors money to pay for state troopers to accompany teams on away trips. you would think that a state trooper or local policeman of the area that you are visiting could easily do this job...plus, they would already be on the clock or wouldn't have to pay for hotels/food/etc for him being out traveling with the team.

to me, it's a money issue...money waste that is not needed. plus, there is no need to inconvenience everyone else on the road just so teams can get to their destination faster...

this is not poo on the way big time programs do it...it's more questioning why do it if it's a waste of cash and an inconvenience for others...

You guy are forgetting that the destination they get to is going to be incredibly crowded, difficult to take a bus through, and probably crawling with pedestrians. They need the cops there just to get them through that, might as well have them escort them to the game.

This is standard procedure, the "it's a waste of money" argument is silly to me. At some level, couldn't some argue that the entire athletic program is a waste of money? This effectively gets the team there at the same time and is just a blip on the expense sheet.

You have to remember though, these buses they are escorting are bringing players to a football game. A football game that (often-times) brings in hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars to the university they're playing at and local businesses. They cannot afford to NOT have a team show up because they were stuck in traffic somewhere.

Maybe the university pays for the escorts out of their own budgets? I don't know.
