Hey, whores gonna whore.

I'm not sure you understand how this works. Whores get paid, they don't do the paying.

If UNT had a chance to be associated with the following institutions (US News Ranking:)

Stanford (#3) Duke (#10) CAL-Berkeley (#20) Notre Dame (#18) UVA (#25) UNC (#29) WF (#29) BC (#36) GA Tech (#44) FSU (#55) Miami (#55) VA Tech (#62) Syracuse (#62) and NC State (#72) you wouldn't do it?

That is just intellectually dishonest.  UNT would do unspeakable things to join those ranks if it had the financial means to do so.

You guys just keep proving why smu sucks.  A university that still professes itself to be Christian based, and representative of that faith, is full of alums who, in your own words, “would do unspeakable things” to get what it wants.  Money and power have corrupted you.  Being a Christian, I’m offended by the example that smu sets.  Take “Methodist” out of your name and THEN you can act like schmucks.

All that said, I don’t personally think buying your way into a conference is doing unspeakable things.  Of course it makes sense to want to play in that conference.  It feels unfair to us because smu already had their shot.  For over half a century (or more?) you already played in the top football conference and crashed out.  You haven’t done anything since.  You have a glimmer of hope now because you have an extremely small number of alums with extreme amounts of wealth paying players again.  That’s it.

Assuming this happens, it's better than the PAC-4 raiding 4+ schools from the AAC.  The AAC can recover from losing 1, losing 4 or more would hurt.  Now, it's on to see what the PAC-2 can pull off or accept.  With this part settled, we can move on.  It's back to a 3-way tug-o-war between the AAC, MWC and PAC-2.

If we had the ability to do what SMU is about to accomplish, we would and if we didn't, we'd be fools.

Ultimately, these decisions are made by the presidents of the institutions and there is a lot more to conference membership than athletics maybe significantly more so in the eyes of the presidents.  There is much more integration at the institutional level among conference members than simply playing each other in sports.  This cannot be under estimated.  UNT needs to continue elevating its academic status.  ADs and staff call each other and talk, but only provide input to the decision-making process and are often out of the loop.

Cal and to a lesser extend Stanford see themselves stronger together than they do apart.  Together they "own" the bay area market and see that as a positive, not a negative.  Sharing/controlling a market is a good thing in their view.

Cal has major budget issues.  They need the annual dollars coming in from media deals.  If they are forgoing that for several years or taking a reduced distribution along with the increased costs, I don't know how they are going to manage.   They will be taking a haircut and navigating the next few years will be a challenge.

I have a friend significantly high up within Cal that's right in the middle of this.  None of the previous points should be a surprise and isn't confidential.  It's more confirmational than anything.

What happens in year 8 (?) when SMU starts taking distributions from the conference?  Will that money come out of the mouths of the other conference members?

We were cheated by the UT- enforcement complex angry that we were successful and targeted because we are small and private.  The Pharaoh demanded we be killed, and now we have wandered the desert for 40 years. But finally we are, perhaps, reaching the promised land and have our chance.

You describe us like we.have power,.but in football we are the salt of the earth.  The every man. You should be supporting us as we show that it is still possible to bootstrap yourself up in the conference game, not side with our big state school oppressors.  We are just giving unto Caesar what is Caesars.

Isn't the 7 year term poetic?

Wow, this is a reach. You should be able to do much better, but you can't. Seems about right.

This is literally the first time in the history of man, that $mut, or anyone associated with the school, has labeled themselves as "the every man."

And no, $mu is like the prostitute who picks up a client by promising them 7 nights of free whatever they desire.  They will even pay for the Motel 6, AND the cab ride home.

$200 Million to get in, and ZERO for 7 years. Seems like smu has been crying for quite a while for someone to validate them.

You’re completely exaggerating the number. There will be an exit fee of about $18m, paid out over 10 or so years just like UH. We’ll be giving up the $7m per year we make in the AAC. You can’t count ACC distributions distributions were not getting. That’s roughly $50m spread out over 7 years. That money will be more than made up for with tickets sales for football and basketball, concessions and alcohol, parking, tailgating, etc. In order to cover any increased expenses for P4 sustainability, our mega donors have already committed to covering those costs. On top of all of that, there are already multiple people waiting to write 7 figure donations to the athletic department as soon as it’s official. Nobody at SMU crying. They’re putting their money where their mouth is to move up in the world.

You and smu have absolutely been (figuratively) crying for decades - thus the line of donors you mention. The fact you come here to pontificate is even more of an indication of such / and the need for validation. From UNT fans at that.

It's quite remarkable actually.

UH, UCF and Cincy becoming P5 schools broke SMU. This is literally thr last chance to join the club. The fact that SMU is willing to join for free is weird.

Yes, all G5 programs want to be in an actual "power" conference. It seems some SMU fans are in their own worlds regarding their perception of their program's relevance. And yes, they have done an excellent job marketing themself as "Dallas's team" outside of the region, where people understand they don't register as one of the 5 or 6 most followed teams in the Dallas area. SMU can move; realistically, not many people will care after it's done. The reality, like the Death Penalty, this "let's be the free hookers at the party" will be what people remember. Unlike the three who earned their way to the Big 12, if they get into the ACC, it is because they bought their way in. That's not a jealous spin; it's reality.

Wait, so your analogy is that you were the slaves, but had enough money to pay to become a Pharaoh and be the slavers instead?

Prestige?  I'm embarrassed for you.  People are laughing at your program.  After getting numerous conference rejections and now begging to pay to enter the door.

SMU's vision is simply just having a seat at the table and the long game. The ACC is likely to be in a dilemma in a few years as it appears a lot of those big players are wanting to bolt for the SEC and when that happens the Big Ten probably starts to look at adding to their conference. I'm guessing the thought SMU has is they don't care that the conference could very well implode, but if it does, they'll be part of that group that will still have the chance to still be in a power conference i.e. shifting to the Big 12 etc because they're already there.

Even with all these conferences imploding I don't think this movement is ever going to stop. There's too much interest, popularity and money in the sport that it wouldn't surprise me if there's some form of relegation type system like there is in European soccer. For now though SMU has a lot to sell because they have money and tons of it. I wish we were in that position because there's no telling how that has hamstrung our program because we didn't have money to pay coaches, or buy out underperforming ones sooner etc.

Ultimately, NT has to win consistently in football and sprinkle in a few seasons where they're winning big and get ranked. Can you imagine if we were getting ranked and winning big what kind of buzz there would be? We just have to get to that position and we have to control our own destiny and not fall back on the school size, location, potential nonsense that masks poor results on teh field because none of that has really mattered for us and we don't have the money the SMU's of the world has.

SMU has more money than UH, UCF and Cincy, but SMU didn't utilize that.

SMU didn't invest into any facilities, SMU hasn't actually won anything in football or basketball, SMU has made zero commitment over the last decade but now that the door is closing, there is a last ditch effort to do this ACC willy-nilly.

Their mentality seems to have always been, why build when you can buy? Their attempts to take shortcuts haven't been too successful.

Everyone buys their way up the ladder one way or another . Without the major millions North Texas has put into bricks and sticks we wouldn't be in the AAC. It appears to me that SMU is looking at the long game. The PAC 12 imploded before the Mustangs were invited, the Big 12 has TCU in DFW ,and the Big 10 and SEC are out of reach. The only opportunity for SMU to move to a P5 conference is to partner with Stanford and Cal and buy their way into the ACC. This is probably their only chance at the brass ring and they are going for it. While the two teams I root for in athletics are UNT and whoever is playing SMU I say good for them. We both have major attendance issues and it is yet to be seen if moving into a better neighborhood will increase cheeks in the seats for either of us. I grew up in Ft. Worth in early 50's thru mid 60's and my favorite memories were listing to Kern Tipps on the radio broadcasting the SWC Humble Oil Game of the Week with my dad on our back porch. I still catch a TCU game every few years and would love to see Fla. State and Clemson play in Dallas. Color me an 80 year old died in the wool Mean Green fan who loves college football.

What does the ACC gain by adding SMU?  What does Florida State, boston college, or duke by playing in the same conference as SMU?  SMU has a small media footprint, those big ACC schools have nothing to gain, in fact it might actually cost them more money to add them.

If this was an obvious decision, the vote would have gone through.  But it keeps getting delayed.  Tweets floating around that they don't want to meet until they know it will approve.

I suspect the "yes" vote they need is not budging.  Is it FSU?
