St. Johns (11/16/23) - Charleston Classic

Starting this thread early, because I want to give a little heads-up on SJ's schedule: they are listed currently as 1-0, but have played two exhibitions.  Here is the schedule from the beginning of 23-24, leading into our Thursday matchup:

10/21, beat Rutgers (exh.) in Carnesseca Arena, 89-78
10/29, lose to Pace (exh.) in Carnesseca Arena, 59-73
11/7, beat Stony Brook in Carnesseca Arena, 90-74
11/13, face Michigan in MSG
11/16, face North Texas Mean Green in TD Arena (SC)

lastly, in case you missed it, Rick Pitino is now coaching St. John's.   He was hired earlier this year.

Thursday tipoff is 12:30pm, broadcast on ESPNU.  Charleston Classic.

The distance to TD Arena from:
UNT = 1,100+ miles
SJ = 770+ miles

Nothing is telling of anything this early on but for the sake of NET/RPI, I hope St John's takes down Michigan.

not a ton to glean just from their 90-74 win over Stony Brook...based on that game this is what their primary rotation looked like, '22-23 stats below:

1. Daniss Jenkins - 6'4" 180, Sr. - 15.6ppg, 4.9apg, 36% 3-pt (at Iona)
2. Sean Conway - 6'4" 200, Sr. - 12.1ppg, 4.9rpg, 38% 3-pt (at VMI)
3. Nahiem Alleyne - 6'4" 200, Sr. - 5.2ppg, 8 starts, 39 games (at UCONN)
4. Chris Ledlum - 6'6" 225, Sr. - 18.8ppg, 8.5rpg, 1.8spg (at Harvard)
5. Joel Soriano - 6'11" 255, Sr. - 15.2ppg, 11.9rpg, 56% FG
Bench
- Jordan Dingle - 6'3" 195, Sr. - 23.4ppg, 3.6rpg, 36% 3-pt (at UPENN)
- Glenn Taylor, Jr - 6'6" 205, Jr. - 11.6ppg, 3.6rpg (at Oregon State)

a study in modern roster building with 6 transfers in the rotation

- Soriano looks like a load...he had 22pts, 11rbs against Stony Brook and averaged a double-double in the Big East last year
- Ledlum is built and plays like Anderson from UNI...led Harvard in scoring and rebounding last season. he had 16pts, 14rbs in their opener.
- Jenkins played under Patino at Iona last season and seems to do a bit of everything...he had 17pts, 7rbs, 8ast in their opener
- Dingle was the leading scorer in the Ivy League last year (Ledlum was second)...went 1-5 from deep, but still put up 13 against Stony Brook. 

you wonder about chemistry and cohesion with so many new faces, but considering these are all very experienced transfers from top/disciplined systems being coached by a hall-of-famer, you gotta assume the learning curve will be shorter. I should be able to catch at least some of their game with Michigan tonight.

Food recommendations for anyone heading to Charleston:

Breakfast- Miller's All Day...be sure to get the banana bread. Best I've ever had.

Oysters/Southern style Seafood- Leon's...amazing fried catfish bites and of course, oysters!

Italian- Melfi's...don't sleep on their pizza. Also have great cocktails. 

And I recommend checking out Fort Sumter. If possible, do the last tour of the day. You get to participate in the flag lowering.

St John's down 10 at the half to Michigan. Sloppy defense, not much ball movement on offense coupled with being loose with the basketball on drives to the basket. They also love to leave 3 point shooters open. Extra defenders will coming crashing on the basketball when it's being handled in the paint so our big men will need to keep their heads on a swivel to not turnover the ball and to find the open players. We'll see what Pitino has for the second half because they look bad.

1. Michigan looks pretty darn good. I might have a new favorite tiny guard...this McDaniel kid is a baller.
2. this is most of those St. John's players first time at MSG.

that said...St. John's looks very beatable. Soriano is still gonna be a problem and they have proven scorers, but this team clearly does not have a point guard to organize and get the ball in the right places. 

they're gonna try to speed us up. I think Rubin is gonna need a steady game

Soriano is a beast. Big, athletic, soft hands, he'll be trouble. Sissoko is going to need to turn in an NIT type performance. Otherwise you're absolutely correct about the guards. We'd be wise so slow the pace down, make them play halfcourt offense and work for every single bucket.

What I have learned over the past few years watching the Mac/Hodge strategy is the slow-down offense/defense prevails over the speed-up offense in terms of game tempo.   This won't be a 92-90 game.

St Johns seemed disconnected with each other, with little chemistry together.  Early in the game, both teams played with a fast pace, and the game was close.  Once Michigan slowed it down, they were able to force st johns into mistakes, and sloppy decisions.

It looks like there is a winner and losers bracket.  There are some good programs in this tournament.  If we could win this thing it would be a strong statement!

Nah. They even have a 7/8 game at the end so you get 3 games no matter what.
