Another reason to hate this place

I remember the Joe T's of yesteryear, small house, walking through the kitchen, sitting at big round tables, and you ordered just the "dinner".

The staff would bring bowls full of all sorts of good Mexican food!

At that time, I thought Joe T Garcia's had the best Mexican food in the state!

Now, it reminds me of a tourist trap.

For some reason the Fort Worth phone book used to list Joe T's as Joe T. Garcia Barbecue. It was good back then, but now it is just bland quantity over quality. Things change. I remember when we thought Ponder had great steaks. Ponder (Ranchman's}is still kind of fun, but those steaks are not great and I don't know if they still have homemade pies or not.

I used to love Joe T's.

But then I discovered this orange box of deliciousness right down the street.5874399042_a772e73fd2.jpg

Great place. Not the best of locations, but who cares. You can find it and the food is definitely good.

If I was a TCU fan/alumni, or if they set up shop in Denton this may bother me, but this really does not bother me. Still a fan of Joe T's, but there is better Mexican food out there.

You don't go to Joe T's for the food, you go for a very unique atmosphere and a great patio. Very Fort Worth.

I also think (?) that the current owner is a UT alum, but I could be wrong.

Agree. Joe T's is basically for tourist.......or large gatherings. It's a business. If our tour returns to Fort Worth next year, I'm sure Joe T's will be happy to book the event.

Just a block away their sister restaurant "Esperanza's" has much better food....and the best refried beans I've ever tasted. AND it's one of the only Mexican restaurants I've ever been to that has a liver and onions dish. My wife always orders that one.

Before it changed owners, "The Mexican Inn" was my family's favorite Ft. Worth Mexican restaurant. Back in it's day, it was much better than Joe T's. Now (sadly) it's no better than Taco Bell. El Paseo on Jacksboro Hwy (south of the loop) reminds me of the old Mexican Inn. Great food......including (just for you UNT90) Charro Beans. They also have the best tortilla soup I've ever tasted.

Can't talk Mexican food in Fort Worth without talking La Familia. The nostalgic will say it was better when it was in the old McDonalds building before W. 7th St. Became the prepsters' trendy spot to see and be seen, but it's the same food served by the same family, just in a swankier atmosphere. Best charro beans in the metroplex.

It's now on Foch St. Just off W. 7th St.

Great Mexican food.

Joe T's may be the most egocentric restaurant in DFW. What restaurant of any notoriety doesn't take credit cards ? Of course, they have their own little ATM with a high service fee available for those that are not aware of the cash-only payment (which is almost everyone who goes the first time). There is something fishy about the cash-only policy. Are they skirting on taxes and paying off someone ? Why else would you not take credit cards, because they can certainly afford any transaction fees.

Margarita's are no longer the same. And, they want you to prepay for reserving tables.

This place was once a Ft Worth icon. Now, I wouldn't even recommend it to a tourist.

UT fans can have the place.

When did this place turn for the worse?

I was hearing about their margaritas for years, but have never taken time to make the visit.

Is this just a Tex-Mex discussion or are any of you going to mention a legit Mexican place?

Because if we're talking real Mexican food in Ft. Worth the conversation starts and ends with Benito's on Magnolia.

The hipster's choice, no doubt. ;-)

When we eat at Esperanzas, we are usually the only non-Latino customers there. To me that says a lot about how authentic they are.

You forget I haven't lived in Ft. Worth since 2001. From what I gather Magnolia Street has become a trendy, niche area...but I've been going to Benito's since I was about 16, waiting tables in a dive-y Ridglea-area Italian joint...Benito's stayed open late on the weekends and was our after-work dinner spot. This is the place where I learned the difference between Tex-Mex and Mexican.
