UNT Football Presser 9/5/2023

Coach Morris:

* They were bigger and more physical than us.

* We need to react to adversity better.

* We need leaders to step up and right the ship when adversity hits.

* Addressed the tackling issue today.  New drills were instituted.

* Have to get our running game going.

* Correct missed assignments.

* This offensive scheme is made to adjust to what the defense gives, but we will work to establish our run game.

Stone Earle:

* Good opportunity to correct the issues and play much better this week.

* We have to find our rhythm.  Too many three and outs that hurt the defense.

*  Execute better, period.

Jordan Brown:

* Time to execute better.

* Stop the arm tackling.

* Too many missed assignments. Have to focus on individual assignments.

* Get better every game (response to a weak question by Vito)

I really don't want to come off as snooty or hateful. I like coach Morris, I really do. He says all the right things and obviously he wants to succeed.

But the big hitter question needed to be: how did he not see this coming? Maybe the spotlight gets to you, but there were major fundamental deficiencies. How was that missed?

Yes sir. And that is concerning.

His LB hire is incredibly inexperienced. No G5 or P5 LB coaching experience:

2013-14: Toledo, graduate assistant
2015-16: Michigan State, graduate assistant
2017: Iowa State, graduate assistant
2018-22: Iowa State, assistant director of player personnel
2023-: UNT, linebackers

Couple that with a DC who's never been a DC before, and there's bound to be issues. Jennings is the only guy on the staff that has some skins on the wall. Caponi can coach corners, but can he coach a defense? Kratch can recruit, but can he coach guys to wrap up?

This season will be telling. I know coaching is a good ole boys club, but feels like Morris really reached on the defensive side of the ball.

I’ve seen a number of statements in various threads suggesting that Capone has never been a DC before. This is technically false.

He was previously a DC at the FCS level. It was at the Division III level, but technically he does have DC experience at the college level.

From Wikipedia: Caponi's next stop was with Washington & Jefferson as their defensive backs coach. After two years as the defensive backs coach, Washington & Jefferson promoted Caponi to be the defensive coordinator.”

I’m not suggesting this is the best DC experience of all time. I’m just pointing out that saying he doesn’t have any DC experience is technically false.

Oh, wow. I did not realize that about LB. Watching our LBs, it's evident.

Dodge 2.0  That defense on Saturday was deja vu.  AD's that do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it.  Mosley may have just pulled an RV.
