If WAC invites us tomorrow

Since we are in the "Dante's Inferno" of the SBC and our complaints are:

1. The worst D-1 conference in America.

2. The worst D-1 W-L conference overall record against OOC opponents.

3. The worst D-1 overall W-L record of all conference schools.

4. Usually only having ONE bowl eligible team (see #3).

5. Probably, overall, the lowest paid coaching staffs in D-1 sports.

Would UNT have to play more $$$ games to suppliment the World Athletic Conference's travel geography?

If we jump to the WAC tomorrow, with this team, how long would it take UNT to become competitive with a winning record in FB??? Seems to me we could only beat maybe 2 schools. How would a 2-9 or 2-10 record be for the next 3 or 4 years for our program (hypothetically of course until we are able to recruit competitively?). I think in all other sports we would be competitive.

Would we want to be in another conference with 1/2 the SBC teams if there is another conference shake-up??? Right now I feel like we are still in the "old Southland Conference" with UL-M, UL-L, Ark St & UNT!!!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Think about this: Is FB the only criteria sport that conference gurus judge a school to gain admittance to a new conference??????? MY ANSWER IS NO!!!

I believe the criteria is:

1. Attendance: Butts in the bleachers!! The more butts the better!! Butts butter the bread for better....well you fill in the rest!!

2. Facilities: We have a first class BB areana!! We need someone from the admin, ASAP, yesterday would be good, to start building our new FB stadium!!

No way! No even the slightest possibility of a chance.

By the way, the Dallas Morning News today has a little blurb about Fresno getting no respect nationally because they ARE IN THE WAC!

Let's not go WACy!

pffttt, that's a pretty stupid column then. You can bet no matter what conference you're in, if you score 42 on the defending and probably repeating national champs, you'll get all the respect you need.

Yes of course we should join. Name recognition is everything in this league!

And Fresno almost beat USC. Everyone knows their name. If UNT hosted Fresno State it would be a freaking sellout. Come on pepole think. When you tell friends we are playing (Sun Belt team name here) they ask oh you should beat them!

Some of you people never went to your marketing class.

$ wise we would figure it out,

I believe a better moniker for the waccy conference would be BWAC®, or,

BIG WEST ATHLETIC CONSORTIUM

To answer your question, the BWAC® name has "some" name recognition still left in it, thus it's worth something. If an Eastern Division could be formed with Troy, ASU, and ULL, "maybe" it would be worth looking into. Eastern Division would include NT, ASU, ULL, Troy, and La Tech, plus a New Mexico State for our guranteed conference win each year. rolleyes.gif The problem occurs when Frenso and Boise or Hawaii move up to the MWC.

The 6 team E-WAC was proposed and shot down by Boise and Fresno. Had it been formed, Boise and Fresno leaving would not have been a problem. We would have had a core group of 6 to build a league around. We could have cast out the western schools we didn't want and sit and wait for CUSA to fall apart to pick up the W-CUSA teams.

This was all posted and proven years ago, but just for those who don't remember:

1. WACy would be a media black hole for us

NT is in the Central Time Zone. As a result, there is little to no media coverage of late games from the West Coast. That means no local TV and no local newspapers. Some very recent proof is USC-Fresno which got no mention in the Sunday Dallas Morning News. And the first TV mention was slipped in around the Sunday afternoon and evening NFL coverage. This means no media exposure in our prime market, plus our two largest secondary markets Houston and San Antonio. Being Wacy works for schools in Western time zones, but not us.

2. Serious bowl problems

The Wacy folks are down to one viable bowl game in Boise, Idaho. The Hawaii Bowl can't survive without Hawaii being the host team - it's been written over and over again for years. You can't get to Boise from Dallas-Ft Worth easily. It is at least one plane change and a whole lot of money.

3. Travel eats all of the money needed to build facilities

Again, look at all of the new facilities La Tech has built since they went Wacy. Every member of the SBC has built some new facility in the same time frame. Wouldn't you rather have a new stadium than pay for trips to Hawaii, Boise, Fresno et al? And, no, we have run the numbers over and over - it is impossible to have both!

4. People aren't interested in most Wacy teams

While we would get a good crowd for Freno and Boise, most don't care about the others. If they did, then the old Big West would still be around!

That's the shortened version for those who were not around when we talked about going Wacy before!

Exactly. We tried the western conference thing with the Big West and it was terrible. We're better off in the Belt.

One number:

Over 2,300 miles from the campus of Hawaii to California. Yep, just to California. Tell me that makes any sense at all, for our basketball teams, volleyball team, soccer team.

silly thought
