You mean he wasn’t very good at his job as a college head football coach? I agree. 

You are right about Riley. He had more guts than any player I can remember. If memory serves [at 79 its questionable] Riley finished his career as a back up at a Louisiana school in the Southland Conference. I think it was the Demons. Todd Dodge insisted on bring his high school staff as a requirement for his employment. It was a huge mistake to allow him to do so. Rick took a gamble and it didn't pay off. I remember going to Norman and watch Oklahoma blow us out playing everyone but you and me. They were trying to run out the clock but we kept responding with three passes and a punt. It was a mess. Regarding Dodge's fundraising ability, this is the first that I have heard about it. All I know is that we started trying to raise $36 million for a 35,000 seat stadium. Money was so slow to to come in that by the time we had enough money in hand to be allowed by the state to bond out the balance cost had doubled and size of stadium shrunk to 30,500. It didn't help that China was hosting the Olympics and drove the world price of concrete and rebar through the roof.

To be fair, the Arkansas game was nationally televised on SECN and we got WAY more publicity than we'd ever get for winning the Heart of Dallas Bowl or New Mexico Bowl. I don't care how bad they are, beating an SEC team is always bigger than beating any MAC/MWC team.

Coach Russell, defense side, told me that rv didn't allow Dodge to retain the defensive coaches after he pleaded with rv to do so. We saw at OU the outcome immediately of rv's decision!

That is BS.  We didn't have the budget to atract a top assistant so RV rolled the dice with Dodge.  Dodge did want his assistants to stay but RV could have easily said no.  RV didn't have the money to hire big name assistants and allowed Dodge to keep Ron Mendoza and the rest.  That is the truth.  It was in many ways a marriage of convenience.

But I don’t want to take all your money, so let’s make this a realistic bet and help the program:

You have such a way with words. Dodge insisted his high school assistants be allowed to come . The budget had nothing to do with that decision.

At the time of his hire this was considered a game-changing move for North Texas not only in our region but across the United states. The athletic director letting him bring in High School coaches as coordinator has to go down as one of the dumbest moves in college sports.

Back in the day The Fighting Irish hired a high school football coach to run their program. It was an abject failure. UNLV hired the best high school head coach in Nevada. Ditto. This was our second go at hiring a high school head coach with the same results. Rick was trying to jump start the program. It didn't happen, and I don't know if it would have even if Dodge hadn't handicapped himself with his choice of assistants. He could recruit, but we will never know if he could be a successful college head coach if he had surrounded himself with a staff with college experience.

When Dickey was fired, the DC was Fred Bliel. He had been brought back by Dickey for a second run in the position in 2006. He was the DC in 2006, the year Dickey was fired. I don't know where to look for the stat, but I know that in the one year that he was DC he significantly/noticeably improved the overall ranking of the defense from the 2005 year.

NOW, it is my opinion (and some others that I have talked with) that if Coach Dodge had retained (or was allowed to retain) Fred Bliel and his staff, his record would have been (potentially) much different. At the very least, Coach Bliel's  defense would/could have been the difference in many of the close games that Dodge lost.....most notably Navy.

Just for the record.

North Texas has hired three coaches out of HS to be our head coach.

1. Odus Mitchell (Marshall HS)  122-85-9...(0.586%)

2. Dennis Parker (Marshall HS)  11-21-1 (0.348%)

3. Todd Dodge (Southlake) 6-37 (0.139%)

 

ADDENDUM: Ok, I found the statistical information regarding my assertion about Coach Bliel.

In 2005 the North Texas defense was ranked (overall) as 101 in D-1

In 2006, under Fred Bliel, the North Texas defense was ranked 64th.

In 2007 (first year for Todd Dodge) the defense was ranked 113.

Not going to happen I'm younger than most on this forum and I have a kid on the way so if Littrell lucks up and farts his way to 6 wins against an easier schedule than usual I'm not committing to giving UNT $100 when I'll have a newborn around that time.

      How do I feel about Morris? I feel like we had the starters in on offense until the final whistle because we didn’t put them away until the very end. Generally I agree with your points above. For me, #4 is the key: fix the problem or lose your job. Either force Craponi to adjust his approach or bring in someone else.

      Well they do have a better chance elsewhere, unfortunately. But really I would bet most of them that go to P5s realize the league is a long shot here or there but much better to finish with 50k+ (of 150k if the rumors are true) than with the peanuts they would get here (if anything). Much easier to start out working life with a little nest egg. I hate it but it’s reality.

      It will be interesting to see an overall comparison between him and the other new HC hire in Texas, GJ Kinne over the next few years. clearly Kinne started off with a bang- 4-1 with a win over baylor im a little concerned with only a 14 pt win over a mediocre fcs team. I’m also willing to give it a year. Just cause you start off with a bang doesn’t mean you can sustain it. Good program builders take time

      Early Prediction - Will we hold Navy to less than 500 yards offense?

      I think we will see a different defense this week. The triple option will force more guys in the box. If we decide to not tackle, it's going to be a long game. Right now, we run a mix of 3 and 4 man fronts. The triple option will force the defense to hold their gaps and key on certain players. The DTs/LBs will need to wrap up the FB every play. The DEs and OLBs will need to be responsible for the pitchman. Our Safety will need to come down and hit the RBs as soon as they receive the pitch.
