Mac and RV deserve some credit for this bowl

Say what you will but if not for the APR we would not be bowling this season.  They deserve some credit for the academics as do the players themselves.  Also Cimminon and the academic staff.

I think the lion's share of the credit should go to Cinnamon Sheffield.  RV may have hired her and Mac may have been the disciplinarian.

No not even a little bit to Mac and RV. If they had done their jobs we would not be so low to start with, we might have something like a Oline. We may have more than 60 some odd scholarships and we would have won 7 or more games this season let alone past seasons. Screw RV, Mac and the horse they rode into town on. No Credit Period don't care they suck, we have to recover from the deep dark hole they put our program in.  How is Houston a better place to coach than North Texas? It sure as hell shouldn't be, thank you RV.

Agree 116%.

Mac righted the ship academically. and recruited well enough to leave us playmakers on both sides of the ball.

He did win four or more games from 2011-2014.  The only other four consecutive four or more wins seasons over the last 30 years were the 2001-2004 under Dickey and 1985-1990 under Corky Nelson.  Reaching back into the 40 year range, Hayden Fry and Jerry Moore strung together six four+ wins seasons from 1975-1980.

So, what McCarney did, although not particularly impressive when you look at other programs, was a rarity for us.

It's also part of the reason I hated the lie about whether or not we had talent on the roster.  Even though we only had 68 scholarship players this year, Mac did leave good talent.

Again, Mac's problem was the inability to find a QB to match the level of even a Derek Thompson, the ultimate in simple game managing tough guys.

I think Canales gave it a shot with JUCO and transfers.  It's just that 100% of them ended up either being head cases, ego-trippers, or just unable to handle even C-USA level competition.

And, even for those who hate RV, he did hire two consecutive coaches who led us to bowl appearances.  So...

...fly a congratulatory banner?

I'll happily give them all the credit they are due -- including RV -- while steadfastly believing Mac and RV were rightly canned.  I do not see how this is even something that requires noting.

Because without the APR score, we're like SMU...5-7 and watching bowl games on television during Christmas.

What happens off the field is important, especially since the NCAA made the APR/Bowl rule.  Mac righted the ship academically with RV hiring in the advisors.  So, you give credit where credit is due.  Nothing wrong with that.

They were canned because Mac couldn't recruit a QB.  He did almost everything else right.  And, that's why we're in a bowl game.  It's worth mentioning.

I agree they need a small bit of credit and spot light because we could be like SMU or some of these other schools who got to 5 wins but no bowl game. But most importantly we need to put the light on these kids who even though statically they didn't improve much, they did get to a bowl game and honestly exceed our expectations as well.

45% for the players

45% for current staff

4% for Wren in honestly changing the program in his few months here from improved relationships and free tickets to chrome Helmets

4% # the fans who supported and encouraged these guys no matter what and who will go to the bowl game

2% for RV and Mac because the one high point that they did do for us is leave a very few talented players Wilson, McClain, Scott Buyers, etc but left is with a high APR which SL should hopefully grow from and sale to kids parents as well.

3% for Hank for his exhaustive work overseeing things and supporting the new staff during a critical off season for implementing the new culture/philosophy

2% for RV and Mac because the one high point that they did do for us is leave a very few talented players Wilson, McClain, Scott Buyers, etc but left is with a high APR which SL should hopefully grow from and sell to kids parents as well.

Largely agree but made a couple changes to see that Hank gets credited for his involvement.

Yes, they deserve thanks

Thanks Mac for making sure our football team was successful in the classroom...while simultaneously leaving the program in a state where 5 wins is the stuff of miracles

Thanks RV for keeping Cinnamon Sheffield on your staff...and leaving her alone to get the job done, much like you left others alone to get the stadium job done

We can move on now, right?

And not a 9 loss season between the two of them.

As did Todd Dodge. Remember, the APR is a 4 year average so while improving the individual year scores, he was still weighted down by Dickey's scholarship-reduction inducing scores for his tenure here. McCarney's third year score of 970 is the first year with no Dickey-recruited player included in the 4 year average. Remember the husbands and fathers
