Glad I lived through the Saban legend - can only imagine Vince Lombardi, Bear Bryant and Darrell K Royal. We witnessed one of the greats of all times.

Do you remember the last time we hired a former Alabama Head Coach, that had won a national championship, as a consultant?

He told us Fouts was good enough and we didn't need to build a new Stadium. I can't remember anything good that came out of that hire. His suggestions may have been impacted by having watched a Trilli team barely beat a D3 squad the night before his presentation (he mentioned that fact with derision in his presentation).  

The year was 2001 and the team Trilli had trouble beating was Hardin Simmons ( one of four wins that year in BB).

It's always been tough to root against Saban. He seemed to legitimately care about the development of his players as people while simultaneously setting exceptionally high standards and sustaining years of success. None of that is easy to do, and he managed to do it all with a great deal of humility.

He'll go down in the history books (and for great reason).

On another note, those are BIG shoes to fill. It's going to be challenging for Alabama to carry on like business as usual. They're likely going to experience some challenges as they go through an identity crisis finding their next long-term HC. It'll be interesting to see how the school and fans respond to that.

Same. Hope the next guy is awful, but no matter, unless he has something like 3 national titles in 4 years the boosters will boot his ass real quick. You never wanna be the guy replacing a legend, you will never meet expectations.

$11M a year for Saban as coach was cheap.  Major NFL athletes make $20-30M per season and don't have near the impact as he did overall on their teams and culture.

Guy was coaching into his 70s. The only things burning were his knees. Back. Kneck. Probably prostrate and who the hell knows what else.

NIL may have been the final straw, but this guy went well beyond the standard and still did amazing work.

Do you think they will go after Dabo Sweeney? He is a Alabama grad and that's where he played football. He has had some success and has won a National Championship.

Dr Norval Pohl thought North Teas should be doing far better in athletics and fired AD Craig Helwig and brought in Gene Stallings for an outsider's perspective.

Oh yeah Gene Stallings thought Fouts Field should be replaced, he just thought we had higher priorities since our coaches in our two potential revenue sports were both so horrible. The Chairman of our Board of Regents Bobby Ray wouldn't let the football coach be fired so President Dr Pohl released the basketball coach before he even hired a new AD.

My point is that NIL was created as a result of coaches and universities making millions while players were limited to room & board. Additionally, despite contracts, coaches were allowed to move around (with or without buyouts) They are not required to sit out either.

I don't agree nor like today's NIL;  wish it never happened. Don't think the NCAA saw this tsunami and failed to have guidelines or rules in place.

Wouldn't be a bad move for Sweeny. He's a proven coach and already loving Alabama would be a bonus for both. He's also currently situated at a school that is slated to likely be left out of the two premier conferences after all the dust has settled. Neither the Big Ten nor the SEC seemed to have any interest in Clemson.

This should have led to the entire leadership of the NCAA being replaced. Many people predicted what would happen and that it would be a pay-for-play system. I don't think many thought there would be so much money thrown at players (even backups who rarely play). I would also guess they did not think they would create a system where star players at Blueblood programs would leave their teams. Combine this with the ease of transferring (players transferring multiple times) and the fact that the spineless NCAA would not attempt to stop tampering; you have the perfect storm in place.

Yes, Stallings said our practice fields (grass next to Fouts) wasn't even fenced or protected.   He gave a realistic picture of facilities and sports, where we were, and where we should be with our size and desires, plus financial shortfalls.  It was well-spent fees for him as a consultant outlining a direction for us. 

Many changes happened after that.  Dr. Pohl's leadership was key.  RV was about to finalize plans to remodel Fouts and make a warehouse next to it the new Athletic Center.   Then Dr. Pohl was informed the lease had been canceled on the golf course.   Next, the Stadium plans shifted (to a new facility) and a new Master plan began for Athletics across the highway.   Getting the old golf course land reserved for Athletics was probably the biggest aid to our program ever!  What school in modern times gets 100+ acres handed to them for athletic facilities adjacent to their campus?

I don't agree nor like today's NIL;  wish it never happened. Don't think the NCAA saw this tsunami and failed to have guidelines or rules in place.  

The cost of a Scholarship at a public school like UNT is at least $70K a year; double at a Private school.   Most athletes (>99%) will never go pro.  Thus they "are being paid" to get an education and skill for other professions.   They could just pay for an education themselves like >99% of other people.
