Official Derek Thompson Apology Thread

So saying that our qb play didn't improve this year is being ungrateful and being a douchebag?

Yes, especially during QB's last rdgular season game, a game we win big against a team we hadn't beat since 1969. Just couldn't wait until the off season and enjoyed this win and season? Yep, douchebaggery of the highest order.

As far as what I saw, he threw a tight spiral on all his throws and made plays with his feet when the opportunity presented itself. There has to be some reason why he's been over looked as far as the back up goes. It could be lack of playbook knowledge or maybe there is something behind closed doors that hinders him from getting PT.

Or it could be ball security.

Throwing tight spirals is great, unless you throw them to the other team a lot.

Being able to run with the ball as a QB is great, also. Unless you resort to running in a panic after your first read is covered. Or if you consistently put the ball on the ground when getting hit while running.

I have no idea if this factored into the equation, but Mac does because he has seen BB in practice. And BB is 4th on this year's QB depth chart. Behind a true freshman.

That should tell everyone all they need to know.

There is a lot more that goes into playing the QB position than just raw physical ability.

And looking at the season accumulated stats, now that the regular season has concluded, is not enjoying a win?

Call who you want douchebags. I'm going to keep supporting this team and DT as they go into this bowl game and be very grateful, as I even have said on here multiple times, for the ride they've given us. Also going to keep discussing football and the stats associated with it on this football forum.

Some in our fan base are trying to out-douche Texas and Oklahoma fans who complain when they win.

We should be grateful to every coach and player on this team for producing a winning/bowl season after the long absence of both that we have endured.

The constant complaining about DT and Coach Mac in the Chat Room through out the Tulsa game was disappointing especially with such a dominating blow out win.

Derek is not the most accurate or physically gifted QB on this roster. He's the best decision maker, thus the reason he's the starting QB. The QBs have to make the right reads on any given pass play. DT obviously does that better than any other QB wearing a NT uniform.

Just to break it down a little, there's a correct throw on any given pass play based on what the defense is doing. It's not just limited to audibles and reading formations pre snap.

I think a lot of the frustration with DT stems from his average/below average accuracy. He probably makes the correct "throw" most of the time, he just can't seem to hit his target consistently. This is why Lil Mac is #2 & BB a distant 3rd. It all comes down to making the correct throw and limiting mistakes/turnovers.

With that said, the team is 8-4 and in a spot none of us could even imagine before the season started. Let's be happy !

Also, let's please stop these apologetic/soap box threads. We all know the popular opinions here on GMG, we just open a can of worms with every one of these threads....

Different rating system.

Bottom line 17-26 173 yds 1 pick. Some people consider that good QB play some consider it poor QB play.

I know its a different rating system, thats why I pointed that out. He's in the NCAA, not the NFL.

And we have been begging for our team to take what someone gives us and ride it into the sunset. We did just that today to the tune of 385 yards and 5 touchdowns. Derrick was instructed by his coaches, and the situation that laid before him, to do nothing but manage the game accordingly. He didnt bail and pass to the other team all day and he didnt put the ball on the ground when asked to run for three first downs. He also should have had a TD on the first drive had it not been for the WR fumble inside the Tulsa 5 yardline on the opening drive

Bottom line...Derek Thompson is a winner.

I still wonder if Karma will end up biting us in the ass for being a sorry thankless fanbase and send us instead to Sochi Russia for the Fake Frozen Facade Bowl?

Ok, ok, ok.. Well look at both rankings for the season.

In QBR DT is 87 out of 128

In passer rating he is 70 out of 124

I'm no math major but I'm pretty sure that's bottom half in both. You say his job is to manage the games but 14tds to 13 ints isn't a great ratio for that. Just because his stats are poor doesn't automatically make him a game manager. A game manager should have a high completion percentage, low TD/int ratio, and should put the ball in places where it gives his WR a chance to make a play. DT really doesn't have any of the 3.

DT is a leader and his is tough as nails. I certainly thank him for leading this team the he has this season. I don't think that there are many out there who saw 8-4 in their crystal ball.

No, all of that was vs our defense. I would hazard a guess that, if put behind that Tulsa line, Derek wouldn't fare any better against our defense yesterday.

Derek was improved some from last year. But too many times this year Derek reverted back to the old Derek.

As I've said before. With better QB play (fwiw my choice after the spring game was McNulty) and with Coach Mac not interfering with the offensive calls, we would have gone 11-1 this year.

Having said all that I am very appreciative of Dereks hard work and devotion to the school.

Calcagne was a very highly recruited player out of high school. Interestingly enough, so were most of the Tulsa players on the field yesterday. Seems to me that Mac and company have done a better job of evaluating and developing talent.

...especially on the defensive side of the ball. Coach Mac does a great job of "motivating" players. One example is Abbe. Up until this year he was a pretty average DT. But this year he's noticeably better.
