Rivals has ranked our Commits

Recommended Posts

Andrew Tucker is the lone 3*.

I think the DE from Cedar Hill might be the best prospect from the group but he's only a 2*. If North Carolina wanting you to play D there, that's pretty damn good. How many kids got drafted from UNC last year, quite a few I believe.

NT Committments

Of course, we already have two 4* transfers which I know are not recruits but they will be new additions just like our HS recruits signings coming this next February.

Wonder how many HS recruits because of outstanding senior years actually gain a Rivals star; or lose a star? Wonder if there are stats on this?

You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down......You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred......You cannot build character and courage by taking away men's initiative and independence......You cannot help men permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves." NT's commits so far are definitely not highly sought, I am surprised any are above 2 stars. One of many major faults with the rating services is that although they rate primarily on the junior year they seldom change those ratings no matter what happens the senior year. NT with the exception of their one La commit are all small and/or private schools, much less likely to be rated high.

Our lowest rated player in our last recruiting class (Michael Stojkovic) had the best spring practice of the guys who could make it for spring ball.

This new staff's ability to spot difference makers in 2 and lower 3 stars will be how we get out of the SBC cellar and build depth.

A quick look at the past few recruiting classes and it is amazing just how many of our highly rated recruits never panned out.

Lest we forget, Boise State built a BCS bowl buster football program with unheralded recruiting classes.

To their credit, Boise has been building that program for 20 years with a smart administration and a dedicated fan base that has nothing else to do in potato land.

I think TCU is the best example a program built on grooming underrated players. Programs like Boise and - in the 90s - Fresno State fueled their success off players that sat on the fence academically. TCU never had that luxury.

Absolutely.

TCU 2003 Class = 14 Two Star, 6 Three Star and 1 Four Star (2003 was a 11-2 record)

TCU 2004 Class = 14 Two Star, 6 Three Star and 1 Four Star (2004 was a 5-6 record)

TCU 2005 Class = 14 Two Star, 6 Three Star and 1 Four Star (2005 was a 11-1 record winning their bowl)

TCU 2006 Class = 8 Two Star, 10 Three Star and now there is a huge jump in three stars after the bowl win the previous year (2006 was a 11-2 record with a bowl win)

TCU 2007 Class = 11 Two Star, 11 Three Star and 1 Four Star (2007 was an 8-5 record with a bowl win)

TCU 2008 Class = 10 Two Star, 8 Three Star (2008 was a 11-2 record with bowl win against Boise St.)

This was the year that DRASTICALLY changed TCU's ability to go after "ranked" recruits. The win against Boise St. with the eventual realization that the TCU program had solidified itself into being a strong football program had taken hold.

TCU 2009 Class = 4 Two Star, 12 Three Star and 4 Four Star (2009 was a 12-1 year with a bowl loss to Boise St)

TCU 2010 Class = 16 Three Star and 2 Four Star (2010 was a 13-0 year with a bowl win)

Key Offensive Players in this timeframe:

Andy Dalton: QB Three Star from Katy Tx @ 6'2 180

Jeff Ballard: QB Two Star from Friendswood Tx @ 6'1 195

Robert Merril: RB Four Star from San Antonio

Aaron Brown: RB Two Star from Katy Tx

Cory Rodgers: WR Two Star from Fort Bend (Houston)

Jimmy Young: WR Two Star from Monroe LA

Jeremy Kerley: ATH Four Star from Hutto Tx (NE of Round Rock)

Joseph Turner: RB Two Star from Austin Tx

Matthew Tucker: RB Three Star from Chapel Hill Tx

Arguably the best current RB they have with Ed Wesley a Two Star from Irving MacArthur

Current WR Leader Josh Boyce who as a True Freshman from Copperas Cove Last Year put up 646 Yds and 6 TDs. He was a Three Star.

Key Defensive Players in this timeframe:

Jerry Hughes: DE (later LB) Two Star from Sugar Land

Daryl Washington: LB couldn't find rating from Irving High

Marvin White: DB Four Star Kilgore J.C.

Jason Phillips (Brother of Jeremy): Two Star QB convert to LB from Waller Tx

Tank Carder: ATH Two Star from Sweeny Tx

Tanner Brock: TE (converted to LB) Three Star from Copperas Cove

To compare (off the Rivals site) we have had the following number of three star commits as of recent:

5 in 2011 (after a firing of a coach and a short time in the field recruiting)

8 in 2010

3 in 2009

8 in 2008

1 in 2007

0 in 2006

1 in 2005

2 in 2004

2 in 2003

1 in 2002

So as you can tell by above....the number of three stars isn't what defined success but moreso that the coaches at TCU were able to evaluate a successful FBS football player based on his talents and potential rather than his Rivals rating. Once the winning became solidified TCU was able to bring in more and more highly acclaimed talent into the program. In the last 4 yrs we average 6 Three Star players a year which (minus their 4 Star random recruit per year) is on par with where TCU was at in 2005. TCU's 2002-2005 classes look very similar to ours (in our last 4 yrs) in "ratings" but those kids wound up creating (through effective coaching) the TCU beast that you see today.

Awesome post, "All About UNT". It's not about the stars. It's about the talent ... finding talent that fits your system or adjusting your system for the talent ... and coaching up that talent.

Thanks bud...cause it only took me the better part of the morning to put together :) Gotta work into the night to offset lol.

This is a great post. My favorite from that rose bowl team was Tank Carder. We still call my 14 month old son tank(wears 3T and some 4T clothes)... Tank was a 2 star and ended up making the biggest play in TCU history to seal the Rose bowl win over the Big 10 champ.

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't Lance Dunbar a 2 star recruit? He could end up a 3rd or 4th round draft pick in the NFL?

I know 2 stars panning out like this are fairly rare, but hopefully we can follow in the TCU footsteps...you know, having the right coaching staff molding these young men and completely tapping into their potential!

FILL THE STADJUM!

Take a peek at both Troy and FIU in the last 5 yrs. One of two things is happening......Three Star ratings are being handed out like candy or both teams are strongly increasing their own ability to recruit. FIU esp is at about the TCU 2008 status as far as what ranked recruits they are bringing in (like 10 three stars and even some four stars). Now imagine what happens when we start winning??
