Why SMU may be a favorite to win the AAC next year

Take a look at the AAC 2023 football schedules and you will see some really interesting things going on, in particular with SMU.

It is shocking how easy of a draw SMU has received in conference this season.  To put this in perspective, in 2023, UNT will play Tulane (AAC conf champs) , UTSA (cusa conf champs), and UAB who is always tough no matter what.  SMU on the other hand will NOT play Tulane, UAB, UTSA... instead they get Charlotte, Rice and ECU.

Seems like SMU will be the favorite to win the AAC title next season before it even starts.  Wonder how that happened?

They bought their way. Like they always do.

They have to play a really good ECU team on the road, on a Thursday night and at Memphis. It's been a long time, since SMU beat either of those teams on the road. If they do pull off those games and win the division, they will probably play Tulane or UTSA for the Championship. To suggest SMU bought their schedule, is beyond ridiculous. Let's take care of UNT's business and just go beat them.

Non conference is a bit tough with games at OU and TCU, but I agree Harry it’s way too easy compared to most schools in general.

Their first 5 games of conference play are against teams with a combined 24-38 record in 2022 and 3 of the 5 have new coaches.

I’d argue to say their first test is us on that Friday night game in Dallas.

Our draw is not that easy, you are just less familiar with those teams. It is, however, way better than our typical draw of getting Cincy UH UCF and Memphis somehow every year

Common since doesn't connect with many over here, they live in constant victimhood. These people finally get their wish, with a Conference membership with SMU and the "poor little UNT" whining continues before the season has even started. Thank goodness we don't play TCU, these mental midgets would have to get rid of their purple died hair and nose rings.

EXACTLY, I wish I could give both these comments 5 stars.   UNT leadership has inflicted far more damage to our program than a conference schedule maker ever could.  In the latest of the self inflicted wounds they held on to a coach with these stats

1-6 vs SMU, no bowl wins, and no conference championships.

The SMU Illuminati didn’t force UNT to extend a mediocre coach twice.  The AD and president held on to Seth pointlessly flounder through a last CUSA season and end up exactly 0.500 and that was exceeding most of our rational expectations for the 2022 season.  When the lights are brightest this program hasn’t taken care of business since a Heart of Dallas Bowl win.

Ironically I suspect the “poor little UNT” perspective partially influenced leadership to desperately hold on to a mediocre coach far too long.  A coach who couldn’t get a high profile OC job upon his dismissal.

This unfounded accusation is a new low even for a place like North Texas.   Moderators need to take this down immediately.

Get back...get back...get back to where you once belonged. Get back, Loretta!

I have a feeling "common since" has seldom connected with anyone.

Yes and ever since we were admitted, SMU fans on the site are reminding us they have one foot out the door already.  Yes I will grant you ECU on the road is one tough game, but not having to play Tulane, nUTSAck and UAB is big deal.
