Fight Song / School Song

I personally think the entire situation is absolutely retarded. This is a college, college students have been and always will be reckless and obscene. Not each one obviously, but as a whole. Personally, I think both sides are wayyyy overreacting. The students probably shouldn't add that part in, I get that, but honestly it isn't that bad. To have the fight song CHANGED as a result is absurd. It just seems, to me, like a misguided attempt. The MF part is probably here to stay, like it or not. As soon as it's reimplemented in it's entirety, that part will return.

Again, I don't say it, nor do I really care whether anyone does or not. But this isn't gonna accomplish anything. Want to censor a bunch of college kids? Find one's who can't speak. Otherwise it's a waste of time.

Here I am to to the GB's rescue, as usual!

There are three songs in the GB's book that are sacred: The National Anthem, Glory to the Green, and The Fight Song. You aren't allowed to change the lyrics or ad lib. when playing these pieces. I've seen people get kicked out for taking "musical liberty" with these pieces. We're taught from Day 1 to take these pieces seriously and to treat them with respect.

I've seen the band director kick out people of the basketball pep band for forever after saying the MF-ing Eagles. It doesn't seem like a logical thing to add into the fight song. What purpose does it serve? The other "additions" to fight songs usually have to do with a long storied rivalry...

I also know for a fact that this was a collaborative effort between the Athletic Department and the Green Brigade to take out the drum break from the fight song. The ESPN2 game was not the only reason for this, it was just the last straw. There has been a long dialogue between both important people with Athletics and the Green Brigade to reach this decision.

Of course the Fight Song has indeed been changed to the point that the only recognizable aspect is the melody and even that was changed to some degree. The chant was never part of the original fight song. I have no idea when that was added but am glad it's gone as well, seeing we could never update that to reflect that we are no longer the UNT Eagles.

As far as the MF addition, that is an embarrassment to our university. Good for the GB director for kicking members out of the band for participating.

I'm writing an editorial to the Daily and starting a boycott for Saturday's game. Don't appreciate students? Why don't we just stop showing up?

Be sure to fully explain why you feel unappreciated. I think that (or certainly hope that) you'll lose a lot of credibility when you whine/complain that people don't want you (and your fellow miscreants) to liberally throw around the "MF" term in association with the school fight song.

Thanks. And I would add that it would be an embarrassment to ANY institution of higher learning in our nation......but especially North Texas.

Just for everyone's information (assuming that they are even remotely interested) could you post the links to the 60's recorded fight song, as well as the fanfare that the band used to play as part of it's (sadly) former entry tradition?

As a follower since 86 I was disgusted with the change. I am Mean Green through and through but this is worse than the stupid claw change. Going from NTSU to UNT Eagles was easy and seems to have been fine for 26 years. What the heck are you doing UNT? What the heck are you doing?

If by "We", you mean you and those students that chose to alter the tradition/lyrics with "M'ER F'ER", then YES... BY ALL MEANS... DO NOT COME TO THE GAME, YOU'RE NOT APPRECIATED.

It's not even that I support the MF'ing Eagles chant. I don't do it anymore. Kind of a freshman/frat thing anyway. I really don't care either way, if people do it or not. The principle of it is sickening and that's what I'm writing about. I could really give a damn what y'all think, as when you were students, Fouts was 1/4 full and you willingly let your football team go Division II without a fight. Current students agree with me, and at this point, those are all that matter. Alumni can't even fill a fourth of their section unless it's HC so what do I care?

Please do and please follow Silver Eagle's suggestion above and explain why.

By the way, not one person on here said they didn't appreciate the students. The comments were in regards to adding a derogatory term to our fight song, period. Again, I'm talking to a brick wall.

Don't worry, the generation from Idiocracy is already here and thriving...we will be voting on two idiots ruining the country tomorrow...

I'd love to be a fly on the wall when you are going in for your first interview after graduation, if you graduate. I'd imagine it may go something like this...

After you are cleared for an interview simply because you attended the finest University on the planet:

Potential Boss: "Hello MeenerGreener, how are you today?"

MeenerGreener: "Sup, M F'er! I'm ready for you to hire me now."

Former-Potential Boss: "Security, please escort MeenerGreener out."

Yeah, totally, using MF'er in an interview, that makes totally sense. Football games=job interview. Same thing.

Sssh, guess what? I'm in the College of Education. High School English teacher.

How I hold myself at a football game is far different than how I hold myself when it comes to...you know...careers, schooling, etc. Member of the Honors College, too. Dean's List. Member of a bunch of honor societies and am an ambassador.

Also, I don't say "MF'er" in the song anymore, either. My point being is...why do we care? It's stupid that we cut the fight song just to stifle students.

I for one really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really appreciate the student turnout and support of the program recently. It is a dramtic change from when I was there and I don't believe it has gone unnoticed by many.

I also think it is pretty clear that a fair number of folks (some students included) do not appreciate the line that has been crossed here. Students were asked to stop on their own. They did not, so changes were made by those with the ability to do so. It is the way the world works and speaks to the level of visibility that this topic had risen to. It seems like a non issue for the near future (at least until the media starts reporting on why the change was neccessary).

Other than that, carry on, have fun, and MAKE US PROUD.

My ONLY point is by just cutting this out is simply showing disrespect to the student section. As if they were reprimanded for being bad. Secondly, we were only told ONCE not to do it this year, and even then only a few people were there when they told the students not to do it.

I feel like many people on here, the alumni and now the GB disrespect the students who go here which makes no sense. We're all in this together. Cutting the end and supporting the GB for doing it is a slap in the face.

This is a student witch hunt. Complaining over tailgating, the frats, drinking, loud/profane music, MF'ing Eagles, cheering on offense, it's just completely OUTRAGEOUS. I don't blame Cougar King, GL2greatness or Riley Dodge for leaving UNT. Students get lambasted by the alumni for idiotic things.

Sssh, guess what? I'm in the College of Education. English High School teacher.

We care because as you indicated above, there are times where your respect level should be elevated, such as a job interview. Singing your Alma Mater's fight song is one of those times, right?

By the way, I'm VERY happy that you do not participate, could you please convince others around you to cease as well?

When you're tailgating or just chilling at your house/apt., use whatever language you want... to your heart's content. In that scenario, you're right. Who cares?

The fight song was altered because as Mr. Schumann stated, it is sacred. It is not to be messed with. When a horrible insertion is very much audible and easily recognizable by EVERYONE in Apogee/Super Pit, the GB/administration has no choice but to protect it. That's what they did, and it is very sad it had to come down to that.

Do you really not care about one of the only traditions we have, in favor of just having a little fun at a football game?

By the way... Kudos to you for wanting to be a High school English teacher. We need more people like you in that regard.
