New Chant

So let's see:

1)Firing off the cannon is stolen from whom? Texas? Texas Tech? Army? Shall I continue? And while we're at it can we accuse every one of them except for the school who did it first of being a copy cat? Oh, and let's forget that ours is the ONLY functional civil war replica cannon in the state.

2)Should we stop building the bonfire? Nevermind that ours is the largest hand-built bonfire in the state because we don't use cranes and instead have a group of dedicated people stay out at that site for a week. Nah, let's scrap this too because a few panty wastes think it looks like we're copying.

3)Let's never chant North and Texas back and forth between the sides of the stadium because Texas does something similiar. I wonder, though, does Penn State make fun of Texas since they chant "We are" and then "Penn State?" I mean, if Penn State had the brilliant and obviously untouchable idea of a call and response cheer (see every rock or rap concert in history) then North Texas doing something similiar clearly makes us "dorky."

Can we please, pretty please, get some students in here with enough school pride (not to mention growing a pair) to say "I don't give a rats ass what your school does I'm gonna have some spirit about mine"?

And while we're on the subject of the people not getting on board and participating...there must be a VERY loud and vocal few hundred that attend EVERY home game because the "North....Texas" chant from side to side in the stadium sure sounds like people are participating.

Or we could do what we do now and that's nothing. Like Eppy said, I'm down with our chants, but the other 10K+ fans aren't. Just because you and the other die hard few think everything is 'great' doesn't mean everyone else does, so something needs to change. So we can educate them, but if they dont like them or think their stupid, they're not going to do them. And whats wrong with creating a new tradition? The 'traditions' we have now were started years ago and hopefully they didn't all think like you "Let's create new "traditions" so that we can feel cool".

All I know is that there is exactly ONE (1) chant that everyone does in unison at NT - it is the "North" and "Texas" cheer. Anything else that works will have to follow that principal of simplicity. And we can't even get the north,texas cheer right! We just go on and on until everyone looks at one another with that embarassing look like "hmmm I guess we should stop now, eh?".

ok ok ok everyone back to their corners... Everyone has demonstrated how green their blood is, and everyone is going to disagree. Whether you want everyone to learn new traditions, or learn the old traditions, the bottom line is, if you cant organize any type of event with the school's blessing, and more importantly, their PARTICIPATION, then you cant teach nobody nuttin. The marching orders to this problem should be to get something rolling on an event. We've got 4 months. I know FFR mentioned earlier all of the "spirit groups" were all part of the traditions committee, etc etc. But have they ever done something in the evening, with the band, cheerleaders, dance team, etc etc before? Back when I was there, we always talked like they should do something, and the best we ever got was like "The cheerleaders will be outside the student union today between 1-2:30 pm. And THAT was IT. Or maybe a week later, it would like ONLY the drumline performing for about 20 minutes. It's odd to me, but it seems like it would take an act of congress to get all of these organizations to put something on in a collaborative effort. Any recent students or grads out there that can tell me they have been doing this, and it was/was not a success?

Get the band out there,

Get the cheerleaders there

Get the dance team there, take your picture with them. Take MY picture with them.

Get RV & TD to say a few words,

Tell a radio station about it (they LOVE this kinda thing AND TD) KNTU, The Ticket.

Get some vendors like Chic Fillet to hand out coupons with silly captions like "If you like UNT's bird, you'll love ours " Hell, I dunno. College kids are poor and hungry, they'll dig this.

Give away ANYTHING with the new KELLY GREEN Color on it.

Call the local Denton High Schools, their football players will show up. Tell them to wear THEIR jerseys.

I'd start by approaching Talons with the event. To me, it's their job to organize something like this. I realize they're students, they're busy, but they volunteered for type of spirit organization, so they should be the experts in this. If they need help, I'm sure several people are willing to do what we can, even if it means pestering phone calls and emails to the right people to set up a meeting. I have no idea, but surely there are Talons on this board isnt there? If you are, speak up, is there some reason(s) why something like is never done? Or has it been done, and I just dont know about it? And dont answer "yes, at homecoming". That's great, but it's too far into the season to START bolstering support for your team.

We've all said before that TD brings a new era to this school. It very well could be our ticket out of this hole we've dug. I'm sure the man is up to his elbows in work and cannot do it all himself. Its our turn to do something. The administration is very excited to have TD here, so I'd say now the time to strike if you want them to participate in a large scale event.

Actually, from where I sit, you and your crew on GMG.com are the ones that are in the minority. I can point you to hundreds of people that have attended or are currently attending UNT that think the tortilla thing is a big Tech rip off, but whatever. !

I was referring to the thousands that did actively participate throwing torts every saturday game night compared to the few here on this board that didn't like it. More importantly the hundreds of kids who absolutely loved it. That's what I enjoyed most about it was the kids that loved collecting them trying to see who could gather the most and anticipating the next score so they could throw them again. The only reason it was banned was because of the mess it created from so many ending up on the track which supposedly caused the track team practice time having to clean it up prior to practice. But the kids loved it and I thought we really missed an opportunity to not only continue to build on this tradition, but also make it even more North Texas by contracting the tortiliaria in Dallas who said he could supply us all with as many Green torts as we wanted in return for a small sponsorship. Then fans could purchase them inside the stadium. To me it was a win, win, win situation. Free torts supplied for an ad, income created by turning around and selling them to the fans, and happy fans with happy kids having fun celebrating NT scores. It was a no brainer to me. If you never flew one of those green torts, man those suckers would fly good.

Most here remember the night in '05 when police escorted me to the portals to ask what happened concerning the security guards and the tort throwing(I never even threw a single tort that night), creating a damn near riot in the stands. That was also the night Ramone Flanigan attacked SilverEagle. In response to Ramones' blow up Coach Dickey called Silver and apologized for his coach's behavior in the stands that night. At the end of the conversation coach Dickey asked Silver what was all the comotion with FirefightnRick up in the stands just before halftime? Silver told him the security guards tried to have me hauled out for throwing tortilias. Coach Dickey replied, "So, what the hell is wrong with that?". Silver informed him that as of that season the AD had started to ask people not to throw them anymore. In which Coach Dickey replied "Hell, throwing the tortillias is the only reason my daughter wants to come to the games".

First off, your story just couldn't be true because thousands of students hate the toritillas...even if none of them are here to say it and I personally saw them throwing them when they were legal.

Second, throwing tortillas is blatant copy-cattism. Then again, so is the tomahawk chop, the wave, having a cannon, and the overrated chant. I can only pray that by next football season only the schools that originated each of these things will be doing them. I despise lack of originality.

If we threw octopi on to the field I promise you the kids would think that was fun...and it would create quite the mess...but it still would be blatent plagerism of the Detroit Red Wings. The tortillas need to go...its Tech's thing, let them keep it. As for the cannon and the "North" / "Texas" you would be hard pressed to find schools that dont have something similar. Every school has some sort of loud noise maker after a score, and having a historical cannon like ours is awesome. The back and forth is done nearly everywhere and when done well and at the right time it creates a great atmosphere in Fouts.

Traditions just have a tendancy to happen...I wish the hand puppet thing at the Pit would've caught on...that was a great bit.

If you want something to throw, lets get a bunch green rubber dodge balls and throw them at our opponents following a touchdown

I think the original was "We are the students of NTSC", but I honestly can't remember. Like I said Latham found it, and we(Talons) all thought it was pretty cool at the time. The Yucca even had pics of the Yell Leaders in mid cheer urging on the crowd. It was definitely cool.

Not sure if they handed the cheer down once our crew all left around 5 years ago, but I hope they did.

Once again, if you guys honestly believe it is a good idea to copy a school in a tradition that is so clearly unique to Texas Tech, and view that as the same thing as the wave, I give up. It's not even close to the same thing, but go on believe you are right. Hell, you guys are always right... you have the most spirit and all the best ideas. I was an idiot for ever disagreeing with either of you (The Emmitt and The FFR)- the greatest fans in the history of UNT athletics. What was I thinking?

When's the hex rally for MTSU? I'll be there in my North Texas garb, green tortillas in hand.

I love the North Texas chant, but agree it needs to start and end in force. The student body has to yell NORTH about 3-4 times before the majority of the alumni get involved. There in lies your problem, when should it end? if you say 5 iterations, well by the time the alumni get going with it, it's done. Blah.

It'd be great if the students could start a "intro" of some sort. Maybe even just a long "heeeeeeeeeeeeeey". Don't ask me, but something specific that identifies this yell. So that when the alumni hear it, we know the chant is starting. Plus it gets all the students ready. It would sound like a low buzz that accumulates into a loud roar and then they start NORTH! (again, requires organization from cheerleaders or Talons).

Then the chant would go, let's say 5 iterations and we could end it with "FIGHT" in unison. Even better, end it with consecutive "FIGHT"s. And, yes, I don't care if it seems like a rip off of Texas. Farmers Fight is no different than Texas Fight or North Texas.

I recall three years ago when we played Texas just after Andrew's death. At the beginning when our fans still had an inkling of hope for a good game, the stadium started Texas Fight. Our small section started yelling North when the stadium yelled Fight to have our own NORTH-TEXAS chant. It actually worked out well and received a lot of attention. Plus it pissed off a bunch of Texas fans and that makes it all worth while. Point -- versatility.

And we when go to bowl games, we need to let everyone know to just yell the whole thing together instead of students vs alumni. Sounds dorky because no one knows what to do!

And if you really want to be original with the new era ... we could replace the NORTH-TEXAS chant with DODGE-BALL and end it with DUCK! in unison. Haha

Greatness!!! I like the NORTH-TEXAS chant, but do agree that it tends to ramble and fall apart at the end.

The one I think has the most potential is the "U-N-T Eagles FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT". Has the tradition tie-in with the fight song and would sound cool after every time we put points on the board. My $.02
