– Defensive end Tillman Johnson is also expected to play this week after being pulled in the middle of UNT’s loss to MTSU.

Anyone close to the sidelines have any input on this?  Injury?  If not, pulled for what reason?

Did either of the two reporters covering the Mean Green ask why TJ was pulled?

– UNT threw the ball 54 times against MTSU. Littrell said the Mean Green will take what defenses gives them and not worry about throwing it too often.

I call bullshit.  After the first drive, MTSU's defense wasn't giving them anything. The truth is, they gave up on the run, and didn't have the ability to pass again until MTSU folded the tent leading 23-7 with four minutes left in the game.  At that point, we had less than 200 yards passing on the night and less than 220 in total offense.

Has the DT transfer from K-State been playing? I can't recall his name just that he was 300 lbs +

Well, MT was show a lot of eight man fronts which SHOULD mean passing is the best option. We did try a number of runs into that but with our O line they didn't have much chance of success. So, yes, they did give up on most runs but late in the 2nd quarter. MT basically looked at our freshman quarterback, receivers and our line and dared us to throw. We tried and couldn't.

UNT up 7-0, 1st Quarter, 2nd drive:  1 rush, 2 passes = 2 yards, three and out
UNT up, 7-3. 2nd Quarter, 3rd drive:  0 rushes, 3 pass = -12 yards, three and out
UNT up, 7-6, 2nd Quarter, 4th drive:  1 rush, 6 passes = 33 yards, seven plays, punt
UNT up, 7-6, 2nd Quarter, 5th drive, 1 rush, 2 passes = 4 yards, three and out

MTSU takes the lead, 13-7

UNT down 13-7, 2nd Quarter, 6th drive, 1 rush, 2 passes = half ends with us facing 4th and 7

Taking out the right before the half drive, we had four drives after the initial touchdown drive:
13 pass plays
3 run plays

They weren't even trying to run.  Maybe they knew they couldn't.  But, why stand up there and lie by saying, 'we take what they give us?'  They weren't giving anything, just 28 yards in four drives before taking the lead they would never relinquish.

During the offseason, many talked about Jeffrey Wilson being a weapon.  Okay, why aren't they using him?

During the offseason, I incorrectly predicted that Littrell would know what to do with a running back in this type of offense.

Also, if there's an eight man front, good blocking leaves your tailback in the clear with just one, maybe two players to beat to the end zone.  Maybe Littrell is just not wanting to publicly throw the OL under the bus.

On the other hand...

...he seems as stubborn as McCarney in sticking with a QB that isn't moving the ball much during the game either.  If the object is to win, give someone else a chance to move the ball.

Hoping Littrell's QB doesn't become the Littrell household favorite despite results the way McCarney's QB did.  If so, it will make for a long season...of just "taking what the opponent gives us"-type excuses as the losses pile up.

So you believe it's a good idea with a poor line to run directly into eight man fronts? Seriously?

Any HS quarterback is coached to look at that coverage and switch to the passing play if one is available.

Really feel we are going through a learning curve with the OC. Where it really stands out is actual adjustments during the game and half time. You can't have hand offs that are slightly parallel to the line of scrimmage when they are penetrating. I still think you do anything you can to get Wilson and Ivery in space. Quick pitch, throw to the flat, slants! If the slot has a lousy game chances are we will! Graham get better every week! GMG

Some people are sure quick to throw Fine under the bus. I guess they think the O- line is doing there job. Hummmm. I thought we were in a re-building year and experience was what we were gaining for the next several years.

everyone knows we are in a rebuilding year, i think it's just that we see something that give us hope and we just want it more and more.

if we were 1-4 or, god forbid, 0-5, we would focus more on the rebuilding and learning aspect.

but damnit...WE SEE HOPE FINALLY!!!!

Don't understand you railing against this statement.  Seth simply said he doesn't care if the team throws 60 times or runs 60 times in a game.  They are going to do whatever the situation calls for.  In this game, they couldn't run the ball for several reasons so it led to them passing more.

I think that's called, take what the defense gives us.

Goree was beating his guy #6 frequently.

Thompson was open over the middle frequently.

Robinson was open down the sideline a number of times.

MTSU defensive front demolished the o-line, and contained the edges, limiting Wilson's typical outside runs and screens. Fine was ducking and tucking avoiding the backs of his own guys, so his vision was limited. Eventually he started hearing footsteps and going all Gabbert on us.

Harrell should have called more plays up the middle (yeah I know). The edges were collapsing but there were creases up the middle all night. We kept attacking the edge and it backfired.

This shouldn't have gotten so many down votes, Jeff Wilson is not being utilized properly and that is fact.

A problem with this O in the run game is that the primary run scheme is zone. Littrell runs it like clock work. When we run that outside zone, it creates a lot of 1 on 1's with our OL vs. the opponents DL. When 1 OL gets beat it allows penetration and messes up the flow of the play. Also, with a weak OL zone practically frees up LB's to come in and make plays because they will never be able to get to the second level because of their struggles with just the DL. It's a bad scheme in the run game with a weak OL. If they are going to strengthen up the run game then they need to get away from the zone for the time being. It's technically the "easiest" to teach in its scheme, but difficult to have consistent success. And if the run game isn't working, Jeffery Wilson needs the ball in open space some way.

What we did in that first drive vs Middle was beautiful. That's how this O needs to be ran. The play calling was good and you can tell it was scripted in game preparation. It flowed and was well called. But we got the ball back on our second possession and went opposite of what we were doing on the first drive. I even mentioned it to @oldguystudent that we were already trying to shell up and sit on a 7 point lead on the 2nd offensive possession of the game.

By the way, shout out to @oldguystudent for allowing me to sit in the club seats with him for the Middle game. I really enjoyed it.

Side note - The line came out vs Marshall. We're 10 point dogs at home. 7 less than last week vs Middle. If our D holds strong and plays well similar to how it has been all year we will have a shot in this game.

Our only shot against Marshall is to do what Akron did - knock out the starting QB Litton in the first half.  Do that, and they have to play their freshman/"developing on the job" QB as well.

wilson is a threat at rb, but the offensive line is sub-par and that's being nice. once we loosen the opponent up with the pass, then and only then will we be able to run against anyone on our schedule besides bethune cookman.  AND when is it ever a good time to run into 8 man fronts?

There was no eight man front.

Here is BYU running into a seven man front against Texas for score...even though Texas had 12 men on the field:

Not great blocking, very hard running + sh*tty tackling.

Here's a score against a true 8-man front...on 4th and 1...defense expecting the run:

First highlight...although, it's worth watching how Ohio State's run game dismantles OU overall:
