DaMarcus Smith's brother killed before Marshall game

Recommended Posts

Surprised no one had posted this, please delete if I missed it somewhere else. I feel bad for any criticism of his play on Saturday, I am surprised he was even able to play after such terrible news. Prayers to his family.

Hours before kickoff against North Texas’ game against Marshall University this past Saturday, junior quarterback DaMarcus Smith learned of his brother’s death. His brother, 23-year-old Demond Ramsey, was killed in downtown Louisville, Kentucky late Friday night.IMG_0645

Smith said he did not find out until he woke up Saturday morning and saw numerous phone calls and text messages on his cell phone.

“Everybody kept calling my phone, and I just had all those ‘I love you’ and ‘I’m here for you’ texts. And I didn’t know what was going on,” Smith said. “It was hard. It still is.”

Interim head coach Mike Canales said Smith immediately came to his room in the team’s hotel after he learned what happened.

“How do you wake up to someone in the middle of the morning telling you your brother has been killed?” Canales said. “I don’t know at 54 years old if I could take that news. But we tried to focus him in and told him to play for his brother.”

Smith said his brother was going to be in attendance for the Marshall game and spoke to him no more than an hour before he died. In honor of his memory, Smith’s friends and family put a rose in his seat and saved his ticket for the game.

Ramsey was also the godfather to Smith’s 1-year-old daughter. And like Ramsey, Smith is the godfather to Ramsey’s 6-year-old son.

Wow, this is actually the first I've heard of it. I am truly blessed to have all of the members of my immediate family alive and healthy. You never know when it's going to be taken away from you. My thoughts and prayers are with DaMarcus and his family and I hope he can keep a good spirit throughout the rest of the season.

Not to be lecturing or anything along those lines, but in the middle of his sorrow,  I sure hope that DaMarcus takes this as a wake up call to get his books and his game in order to try and avoid the scene that likely got his brother. I have brothers myself, and I've had worries in that area also over the years. Deepest condolences.

I missed the news until I saw the article. I debated creating a thread if it was something they wanted to keep private but thought this might be a good spot to post condolences if they see this.

No problem, I'm good with it. I figure only a small percentage of the fanbase was listening to Hank and Dave at the time.
