  1. Wearing a mask to games is the only way we eventually get to NOT wear masks at games. So yes.

  3. Is our SOW logo trademarked? Is so, can’t we sue the Australian military for about $10,000,000,000 (that’s $10 Billion), and buy our way into the Big 12? Who’s with me on this sterling idea?

  4. For what it's worth, it was discovered that Walsh was drinking at a casino during school hours, only wish he could have gambled on UNT a bit more.. All joking aside, I seriously doubt this will improve the pipeline we all wish would happen with the Denton schools. Reality is that very few athletes from Denton county want to play at the next level right here in the same place at a school like UNT. We can blame Walsh all we want but we get roughly the same number of recruits from Lake Dallas, the other Denton schools, Lewisville ISD schools, and even Argyle as we do from Guyer.

  7. The idea that a merger between C-USA and the Sun Belt is inevitable is ridiculous. Schools will cut, and cut some more, before this scenario ever happens. There are too many egos, too many lists, too many rankings, too much prestige (or lack thereof), and too many perceived or real slights that would ever allow this scenario to come about. Not saying the idea of a merger is right or wrong, but we're still a long way from this ever happening.

  8. My class was involved in the selection of colors/mascot for our high school. As we were polled for animals/mascots, the administration had an outside advisor come in and explain to us that birds (hawks, eagles, etc...) are very limiting. Apparently there isn't much you can do with them compared to other animals, so. you end up with a lot of similarity. My current favorite hat is a UNT hat with this very eagle on it. 9/10 times I get asked about it, the person thinks I'm a Philadelphia fan.

  9. North Texas released our latest branding, which includes the SOW in May of 2003. The committee,... assembled by Dr. Norval Pohl and the URCM department, led by Deborah Liliyeart(ret),...now the UBSC (University Brand Strategy & Communications)Department...spent a large portion of 2002 and into 2003 designing the new marks. If I recall correctly the designers were a compilation of 5 or 6 graphic & design students and professors from UNT and maybe one outsider? Somewhere I have a box of FOI papers that described the process they went thru to come up with everything,, and I believe the university spent around $200,000 for the process to be finalized? Anyhow, the SOW derives it’s design and name from the 1970’s stylized Eagle used on the 1970’s era football team helmets. Coach Hayden Fry asked that the university hold a campus-wide design competition but a member of the athletic department staff, an extremely talented alumn named Rick Spears drew it up on a restaurant napkin and showed it to Coach Fry and he loved it and that was it. But many did not care for it at first and called it “The Fly’n Worm” and that nickname stuck. Mr. Spears hated that it became known as that “The Fly’n Worm” but like I always told him it’s now become one of the most unique and legendary logos in our history and he should be proud of it. And he was.. So when the new logo came out it was very well recieved, plus it was stated that the new logo’s designers took some of the Fly’n Worm’s characteristics....so everyone started affectionately calling it “The SOW”...Son Of Worm,..and here we are. I think it’s a great tribute and honor to one of our greatest coaches, eras and alumns. As for Mr. Spears he was quite the character and posted as “GreenGrenadeII” here on gmg till he passed away back around 2010 I think it was? He was one of the most talented dudes I’ve ever known. He was an artist,..accomplished pianist and marketing genius and knew more history about the Mean Green and more stories than you could ever imagine. He gave several of us a large print copy of what he imagined Apogee would look like years before the stadium was ever built and it truly shows how great of an artistic imagination he had.. I really miss him. Rick

  11. Only 16 of the 62 schools in Power 5 conference haven’t made their decisions on reopening official, based on a list compiled by the Chronicle of Higher Education and Star-Telegram research. The Cal and UCLA campuses are expected to have minimal in-person studies, and USC is among 14 others searching for the best plan to open their campuses safely. Some are opening in phases. Some will offer both in-person and online classes. Some will wait as late as July before deciding on how they will hold fall classes. Even if there are in-person classes and fall sports, namely football, things won’t be going back to normal. Football will likely be played in empty stadiums. 12. Between C-USA and the Sun Belt, there are 24 schools that could easily be split into two 12-team conferences or three eight-team conferences. Former Sun Belt commissioner Karl Benson, who led the conference from 2012-19, has always believed there’s too much overlap between his former league and C-USA. “I still firmly believe that North Texas and Texas State and UT-San Antonio need to be in the same conference,” he said. “(Louisiana-Lafayette) and La. Tech need to be in the same conference. Southern Miss and South Alabama need to be in the same conference. That’s the same for Troy and UAB, and Charlotte and App State.” One solution would be to merge the C-USA West and the Sun Belt West and then do the same for the East. That means Louisiana Tech, Southern Miss, UAB, La. Tech, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, South Alabama, Arkansas State, North Texas, Rice, UTSA and UTEP would be lumped together in the West In the East, it would be Florida Atlantic, Western Kentucky, Marshall, Florida International, Middle Tennessee, Old Dominion, Appalachian State, Charlotte, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Troy and Coastal Carolina. If C-USA and the Sun Belt dissolved to create three more regional conferences, independent football programs like UConn, Liberty, New Mexico State and UMass could also factor in as members. read more: https://www.sunherald.com/sports/college/conference-usa/article242750786.html

  13. This one caught my attention because it’s the first one not from a CUSA AD or CUSA market. I have probably posted my theory of close but not too close. At the FBS level lacking P5 money you want opponents you can bus to. Maybe sell a few more visitor tickets but mainly cut your bills for flights and hotels and player meal allowances. BUT. You don’t want someone so close you are competing for attention from your local TV reporters, radio talk hosts, newspaper space and casual ticket buyers. That might not matter in DFW where the pros, UT, TAMU, and OU suck the air out of the room but it matters in the Monroe media market and may matter in San Antonio, it matters in El Paso. Until I see it happen, I don’t believe a neat clean and orderly realignment can happen. Sun Belt commissioner owes a fiduciary duty to members he faces personal liability if he negotiates a shuffle that leaves UTA and UALR out of the mix. Likewise if MTSU ends up worse off because the commissioner brokered a neat clean realignment, she’s at risk of breaching her duty. Either the eastern schools break away or USM and UAB do a Mountain West organizing their own mid-south league but coordination is improbable.

  15. Every program is likely to be in a world of hurt unless this virus thing goes away. The Belt and CUSA are no more likely than any other conference to feel the pain. The super programs will lose millions, they may be able to survive longer; but face the same issues.

  16. If were honest enough to admit the Louisiana football program is probably more well thought of than ours. It gets me how many of our fans get pissed , for example when it comes to the UNT-SMU relationship, but then turn around and act like were too good for other CUSA and Belt schools. As a G5, we need to push for a regional conference. We need to also keep in mind sending non-revenue sports all over the map is costing a lot of money. Maybe we can look outside the box and an option to possibly have Football conferences that are different than Basketball and non-revenue sports conferences. Perhaps you can have a more clustered grouping in a conference for "Olympic" sports?? Not sure, but if cost are not contained more and more schools will be in trouble.

  27. Rough times indeed at UTSA. They have now scrapped plans to build their long awaited covered practice facility ( UTSA covered practice field on indefinite hold ) In 2018, UTSA students voted overwhelmingly (67.7%) against funding for athletics that the athletic department stressed were necessary to help make UTSA athletics competitive.(UTSA Athletics Fee vote). Now UTSA is additionally staring down the barrel of drastically reduced conference and NCAA distributions. Athletes are finding it harder to escape the impoverished program. UTSA is withholding from athletes funding for summer school classes to ensure that student athletes don't have the ability to graduate and transfer out before their eligibility expires. Per the university, summer financial aid is “a privilege and not a right.” In other words, summer classes are not provided for the benefit of student athletes, but only to help bolster the school's APR score when deemed necessary. Now UTSA is instituting a policy of not providing anything to student athletes that the university is not specifically contractually obligated to provide.

  33. This reflects so poorly on our latest year under the 2 million dollar man. We can't even get one of the greatest players in UNT history, one of the best QBs in the past few years of NCAA football drafted. I know I'll get flak for saying it, but he SHOULD have transferred elsewhere for his own sake. We dragged him down as much as he pulled us up.

  35. Why do you think the ULaLa program is better thought of than NT? Sure regional conferences make more sense than ever, but egos are involved, NT would fit better in the AAC than either the Belt or CUSA; but that is not likely. All three of these conferences are spread out too far There are a lot of ways to cut down travel even with the current conference affiliations. If the coronavirus fades, than it will be business as usual. If it keeps reoccurring than regional conferences may not be enough to save college sports.

  38. So the long explanation about how our current Eagle took cues from the stylized worm logo of the 70’s was complete and utter bullshit? People here seem to be taking this pretty well. We clearly ripped off our logo, gave no credit to its original creator and fed students and alumni a line of BS about its creation.

  41. I don't normally look at this board, but I was curious if you were possibly talking about the upcoming SMU game. Sadly, I could not find such a thread, but I did find this one interesting and decided to post. Doubtless someone will call me a troll because they don't like what I'm posting. Facts are facts, though. 1. LEOPOLD IS A TROLL!! Or perhaps not very knowledgeable. An SMU fan who comes onto your board and proceeds to tell you that you're the next Boise State and also the key to a $25 million contract for the AAC ? All of that is incredibly unlikely. 2. It is in the best interest of SMU to not have North Texas as a conference mate. Imagine you were SMU. Would you be okay with taking a local competitor that could possibly surpass you? Look at how SMU has consistently mismanaged its athletic program over the years. I doubt any school in America has done less with more. But here's the thing, SMU knows they're bad. So why take another school that could string together a few good years and surpass them, both in the American and in getting into a better conference? It just doesn't make sense. 3. I could get into all sorts of talk about markets and and value and how he's just telling you what you want to hear, but I'll just leave it at this: based upon Leopold's assertion that if North Texas is a jewel SMU just won't be able to say no to because Methodists crave those crisp, crisp bills, why is North Texas not already in the AAC? There's presently an opening. And there's going to potentially be another when Tulsa inevitably drops. But to my knowledge there's not such much as an exploratory committee looking into North Texas because they aren't a real contender. So, after all of that, what happens to North Texas? Where is your future? Given the reality of the coronavirus and that A LOT of programs could shut down, that's hard to say. I'm not saying North Texas will shut down, on the contrary, I believe you will make it, but if a worst case scenario happened and 30 G5 programs drop football, that's a lot to imagine. For the sake of simplicity, let's say no one drops football though and things remain exactly as they are. If I'm SMU, it's in the best interest of my conference to add some combination of SDSU, CSU, and Boise State (the real one). This would do two things: help with the television contract and eliminate the AAC's closest competitor in the MWC. It's at this point that North Texas needs two things: 1.) Never, ever join the MWC. And 2.) Hope for SMU to get taken by someone else. If SMU moves up, you take their place. Will that happen? I have no inside knowledge and cannot say. Unlike Leopold, I'm not lying to you.
