Coach Canales 1st UNT Press Conference (Periscope)

Periscope had it up, love what I heard from him. Didn't take the bait and bash Mac, talked about it being a decision to lock arms and play for each other and the university. Wants to allow d. Smith to use his talent and stretch the field vertically, and said Smith mis called 5-6 plays vs southern Miss and showed better ability Saturday to change plays and get us lined up correct.  Open, honest and fired up.  I will definitely be tuning in Thursday night, may even make the drive up.

Good comments from Chico. I think he genuinely likes Mac. Would not take multiple opportunities to blame him or say something bad. Would not name starting QB, but talked about Smith's talent. Also talked about the need to know the offense to make it work. Plans to open things up both offensively and defensively. Specifically mentioned blitzing more. Wants to make it fun for the players.

He danced around the QB question (didn't want to name someone WKU could prepare for), but he dropped hints and smiled the whole time. "You'll be happy."

It's Smith y'all.

As far as defense, he also mentioned going man. WOO!

Let those kids play some football!

I think Chico is much more aware of what the players and fans want. Mac's stubbornness and super-conservative 1970's play style cost him his job. He never took chances, always played it safe. The fans know the potential for North Texas and I think he does too. He knows he has to take some chances. Will it backfire? Maybe. But did Boise St. become a G5 powerhouse playing it safe against Oklahoma? No they did not. We need to do the same.

As the great Wayne Gretzky once said: "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take" and the only shots Mac has been taking are of the Grey Goose variety

Anyone catch the comment regarding different QB's strengths?  He was responding to a question regarding opening up and throwing more downfield.  He mentioned that they try to leverage each of the QBs strengths when they are in the game.  Greer has his strengths, Smith can move in the pocket and open up the field, and he mentioned McNulty's strength as XXXX.  I missed it.  Something about RSO or something.  I assumed he was referencing something that meant short passing game or timing or something but did not catch it.

Is that like a pre-snap check?  Or is that during the play?  Because if that's during the play, he's not very good at this at all.

It's a post snap read. Usually a linebacker/D-end/safety. The ball is snapped, if the player being read crashes the QB will pull it and throw. If they hang back, he'll hand the ball off.

The TD pass to Marcus Smith was an RPO commonly referred to as "Pop". The defense played the run and all shifted left, opening up the seam down the right side
