  1. We can talk about poor recruiting and needing a new DC but lets not forget what a great season we had. Conference West Title and another bowl berth. But I think what could help more than anything in recruiting is being able to say we were not only the top G5 in Texas but also better records than any G5 from Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. North Texas 9-5 Houston 7-5 SMU 7-6 Louisiana Tech 7-6 Arkansas State 7-5 NMSU 6-6 UTSA 6-5 Louisiana Lafayette 5-7 Tulane 5-7 Louisiana Monroe 4-8 New Mexico 3-9 Texas State 2-10 Tulsa 2-10 RIce 1-11 UTEP 0-12

  5. I really do think there should be a cutback in some of these bowl games (though I personally want the HOD Bowl to be one that survives). Maybe subtract one bowl a year for five or six years and see where that leaves things.

  11. UNT had a very tough road schedule and could had won against Oklahoma, UTA, and Georgetown. These are road games that I think we will be able to pull out in our weaker C-USA schedule. Was not holding my breath to win a single road game before the season but here we are with a winning record before conference play. I think Benford only did that in 2013. In two months we have to grade considering all of the circumstances, especially playing with a mostly new team, I give Mac 2.0 a solid A.

  12. I have to say that this is far and away Bakers best hire in the three major sports at North Texas. He has the most lifetime wins in the three major sports of any hire that Baker has made here, therefore he must be the best hire.

  13. UH pissed off Naaman Forest High in Garland, local as in DFW. Don't really understand the infatuation with Tune. Things slow on My Little Pony Fans website? Don't be scared of change at the big public school in your backyard. It won't change what is coming.

  14. Supporting your school and lying to yourself are not synonymous with one another. This was a decent year in college football standards. This was a "historic" year for UNT football standards. That's where the problem lies. We see ourself as 1 thing whereas everyone else sees us with reality taken into perspective.

  19. I believe this is the book where he talks about resenting having to get involved in petty disputes between some coaches over locker space. Because he claimed that he had just raised 26 million to help build the Super Pit and he had better things to do than settle petty arguments. Well, I love what Hayden Fry did (and tried to do) for this school, but he had nothing to do with the funding for the Super Pit. Hayden Fry used to play very fast and loose with the truth. The concerns (lies) about academics at North Texas go back to when we achieved University status (1961), and filed a bill to change our name to THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS. A very ugly chapter in North Texas history. You can read about it in the book The Story of North Texas, by Dr. James Rogers.

  20. C+, which can be upgraded (or downgraded) with more games. 7-6 currently on the year. Won all expected games (Eureka College, Bethune Cookman, Rogers State, Grambling State, Indiana State and McNeese State). I had San Diego as a toss up from what I knew of them. Lost all expected games (Nebraska, Georgia Tech, OU, UTA, Georgetown) Lost to a below .500 UTRGV team at home (which I projected as a Win) Unlike many, I refuse to give McClasland extra credit because Tony Benford was bad and he doesn't appear to be. Instead, my expectation is to see similar results enjoyed at Arkansas State in his lone season there. Still early I really like the addition of Roosevelt Smart and Duffy. Gibson will contribute in the future. Don't like what I have seen in bringing in Arikawe and Michael Miller as Juco guys. Juco's should be impact guys or major contributors. The Russian's situation was somewhat of a gamble and hasn't paid off this year. Not sure why we have a transfer (J. Simmons) using up a valuable scholarship this year to play next year. (Looked like a modest contributor while at ArkSt) Inherited a nice PG in Woolridge, Lawson and a nice prospect in Zach Simmons. Lawson played better last year but Shane Temara is playing much better. Maybe its just the adjustment to a new system at this point. I think we missed a golden opportunity to add to the mix with 7 scholarships for this team and not getting production out of 4 of them (for various reasons). Coaching is better but recruiting is equally important. I'm sure he will end up being a good hire. Just depends on what we look like 3-5 years down the road. I was a student during 3 consecutive 20+ seasons under Bill Blakely; with the top talent the state had to offer and having the best program in Texas. Attendance was at an all-time high and the Pit was electric. It's on my bucket list to see those times again. Hopefully this coach can help move the needle.

  22. I hope everyone is with their family today and tomorrow. Christmas is exactly the time to be surrounded by people you love and that love you. If being together physically is impossible then call and visit and get together soon. I wish for all my Mean Green friends good health in the coming year. The older I get the more clear good health becomes. And that common denominator we share here. A great Mean Green season. As good as I've heard you have all been I expect us to be rewarded beginning in September. MERRY CHRISTMAS GO MEAN GREEN

  24. This is a boring game, and it is so quiet you could here if a waterboy farted. Personally, I'm glad their attendance blows. Serves them right for muscling C-USA out of the bowl, and not inviting North Texas. Even with this cold weather, North Texas vs. West Virginia still would have had a respectable crowd.

  27. Plane crash was in 1970 on the way to play Utah State. They didn't drop football till 1986 when the Missouri Valley Conference dropped football. I was just looking it up and at the time the MVC dropped football in 1985 they had a mix of two 1A programs - Wichita State and Tulsa and five 1AA programs. The only one of the seven programs that played football in CUSA was Tulsa. Tulsa wasn't a charter member. So, the chances that NT staying in the MoValley and thus becoming a part of the founding of CUSA weren't very good. Louisville went Independent in 75. Cincy in 69. Memphis in 73. Those three joined independents Southern Miss and Tulane to form CUSA football in 95 with Houston planning to join but playing out the last year of SWC football in 95. While it didn't work out for NT, going indy in the late 60 /early 70s seems to have been the route for most of the football playing founders of CUSA. The others all stayed football independents and managed to avoid the 1AA drop down by various means.

  33. UNT has to be more aggressive than they have shown with the top ranked recruits in the area. Subscribe to Randy Roger's service, and others, and offer every top kid early. Follow up, follow up and follow up. I realize there is a screening process and Littrell wants every kid to fit his Core Values. But at the end of the day, we will always wonder why the top athletes end up at FAU and Troy.

  43. "Although the points were not important at that time, the shot did bring the 8,800 Coliseum fans to their feet and the noise they made must have made the ghosts of the neighboring “Old Pit” raise up and take notice." When was the last time we had HALF a crowd of 8,800 in the Super Pit??? That place would really ROCK if there were 8,800 people in it, even if not all of them were cheering for the Mean Green.

  44. Grand Green, I yield to you on anything before 1975, but I have to respectfully ask you to put that bottle down. Now, Deon Hunter is my homeboy (SOC) but did you mean to put him ahead of Weasel Johnson? He does not make my list! John Horrocks ahead of Kenneth Williams? Lurch Davis? GG, you have your UNT Hall of Famers on the third team! Excellent job! I appreciate your input! Hell, I thought I was the only one on this board that watch NT basketball before the year 2000. Anyway, I'm glad they finally took those orange seats out. Ya think that may have contributed to vision problems with your rankings? (Just kidding) A closer look at my case: UNT's Hall of Fame JESSE RATLIFF -- It didn't take long for Jesse Ratliff to find the path to stardom at North Texas, where he lettered in basketball from 1990-91 to 1993-94. Seven games into his freshman season, Ratliff was inserted into the starting lineup - a role he never relinquished. Four years and 114 games later, Ratliff left as the school's No. 2 all-time scorer with 2,130 points. After earning Freshman of the year honors in the Southland Conference, Ratliff was a three-time All-Southland Conference performer in his final three seasons. Perhaps the greatest stretch in Ratliff's career came during his sophomore season where he combined to score 63 points and grab 31 rebounds in league games against McNeese State and Nicholls Stats, for chi he was named Player of the Week by Sports Illustrated. Although Ratliff was an explosive scorer, he was also a powerful rebounder who totaled 913 career rebounds, good enough to rank him No. 3 in school history. BILL BLAKELEY -- The Mean Green’s head basketball coach from 1975-76 to 1982-83, Blakeley owns the second-most coaching victories in school history (134) and his career .612 winning percentage (134-85) is fourth-best in school history. He coached the Mean Green to three consecutive 20-win seasons, from 1975-76 to 1977-78. With victories over Arizona State, Kansas State, TCU, Baylor, SMU and Texas during his eight seasons at North Texas, Blakeley also led the Mean Green briefly into the Top 20 national rankings for the only time in school history. TONY WORRELL -- A four-year letterman from 1985-88, the 6-7 forward is North Texas' No. 5 all-time leading scorer with 1,516 points. He was twice named first team All-Southland Conference and, with a conference-leading 20.2 scoring average as a senior in 1987-88, Worrell led the Eagles to Southland Conference regular-season and tournament titles and a berth in the 1988 NCAA championship tournament. KEN WILLIAMS – A four-year letterman in basketball from 1975-78, Williams is the Eagles’ most dominating rebounder in history. He led the entire nation with 14.7 rebounds per game in 1977-78 and led the Eagles in rebounding in three of his four years. He is the school’s all-time leader in career rebounds and also holds the top two single-season totals for rebounds in North Texas history. 1st team All-State @ Dallas SOC. Lead team to state finals back to back. KENNETH LYONS – He led North Texas in scoring and rebounding all four years with the Eagles. Establishing himself as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 2,291 points, Lyons also holds the school mark for single-game scoring and points scored in a season. Walter "Weasel" Johnson - All-Conference Juco (MCC) The most exciting and quickest player @ UNT. Jon Manning - NAIA All-American (Oklahoma City) Could play for any school in the country. Very much a team player. Would score 40 if needed or play the point position when needed (Sr year) Outstanding shooter! Melvin "Lurch" Davis - 1st Team All-State (Greenville High) The total package Donnell Hayden - All-State (Leading scorer @ Baylor) Unstoppable! Kid had a run of over 30 pts at only 6-0. Only played his Sr season at UNT. Good enough to make my list! Carl Jones - 1St Team All-State (Tx HS All Star Game) Along with Manning, best pure shooters I have ever seen (anywhere) Terry Bailey -JUCO All-American (TVCC/ formerly Henderson County JC) Ronnie Morgan -1st Team All-State (All Conference 1st team) Average 16 pts and 12 rebounds. Runner up to Player of the Year. Played overseas Delonte Taylor - High School AA. Average 16 pts @ UNT. Drafted by San Antonio in the 1988 NBA draft. Son (Delonte Taylor, Jr) is currently the #11 ranked recruit in the Washington DC/MD area (MM Washington HS) # 4 is 6-7 Patrick Ewing, Jr. Waymond Lister - 1st Team All-State (MVP-Texas HS All-Star Game) Charles McMillian -All-State, Juco All-American (Tyler JC) Along with Lister, the best leapers ever at NT. Thomas Gipson -1st Team All-State (McDonald's All-American) UT Signee
