  1. Just a few things I've noticed that make me think that we made have hit the coaching lottery jackpot. Early on the OLine was really struggling. Noticed that we've put #36 (?) in a type of h-back role to help with protection quite a bit. SMU game we had no threat at kickoff with Buyers and Wyche. Changed to Wilson and now we've got a POTW. Garner getting more playing time at LB and really making plays. The team regurgitates what Littrell says in the media. They are completely on-board. The switch at QB (I know it's obvious). I think this change had as much to do about putting a guy there who will do whatever it takes to win (aka Scott Davis and Scott Hall back in the day, or DT in the HOD Bowl after jacking up his knee). It is an example that if you give it your all you will be rewarded. I know it's early but this feels different than other coaching staffs we have had.

  2. This must be "since returning to D1". I really wish this qualifier was stated correctly. Forgetting the great history UNT football has going back over 100 years is worse than calling us NTSU.

  6. Since Gooding, Mailbox and a few others seem to have benched themselves the last few weeks, it's good to see Andrew step up - especially with our depth so shaky this season.

  7. Beating a FC division team and a poor Rice team looks good only when compared to the futility of the last 2 years. The real tests start Saturday. Frankly it doesn't take a lot to look good compared to Dodge and McCarney. I am excited with the new direction of athletics at NT. Littrell and his staff appear to be making all the right moves. I think that on the offensive side, they don't have the horses yet to truly run the offense they want but have adjusted to the relative strengths of the team. I thought the returning defense were underrated by most, and they are getting better. The contrast between Littrell and McCarney is amazing. McCarney came in and bemoaned that the team he inherited was too small, slow and had few players that had other ship options. To his credit, he won with that rag-tag group, but failed miserable at recruiting. McCarney recruited some good players but not enough and never got classes that even matched up to Dodge's. Littrell could have played the same game as McCarney, lament the poor status of the program to highlight his future achievements. Littrell knows that positive is always better to unite and motivate the team and to advance the program.

  8. Technically, neither Seth Littrell nor Mason Fine has ever started out 3-2 at UNT, sooooo history indeed

  10. He did say "signs" and "make me think." I don't think he's calling for the coronation yet. We'll see. I'm seeing positive signs, and Hoops points out some good ones. I also like how Littrell's coaching personality is coming out. When he first came, he seemed nervous and hesitant--not that I blame him, but that's not typically what you see from a Division 1 head coach. Now, I'm seeing more that he is a tough, no-nonsense kind of coach, and I like it.

  12. Too bad they decided the all black uniforms weren't good anymore. I remember getting blackout shirts for the 2013 Rice game on Halloween and how incredible it was to see the all black uni's with the entire crowd in black. Probably my favorite UNT moment in person(I was unfortunately out of town for the HOD bowl)

  13. Truth be told I'm still stunned we're starting a true freshman at quarterback and have a coach confident enough to do that.

  14. So Golic lost a bet and he paid up this morning by having to eat some Hell Burgers from Roosters Roadhouse. Good to see Denton getting some national pub. I've never eaten there before but it looks like I may to try it out this weekend when I'm up for the game.

  16. How many people would believe that North Texas had number 1 draft choices in 1969, 1970, and 1971 ? I know it seems impossible. Joe Greene was chosen in the first round in 1969 by Pittsburgh, Cedric Hardman was chosen in 1970 in the first round by San Fran, and Leonard Dunlap was chosen in the 1971 in the first round by the then Baltimore Colts. You know what happened ? Rod Rust, not a name that is revered by North Texas fans today despite having 3 number 1 picks in a row, was let go after the 1972 season and was replaced by Hayden Fry. Fry (google Hayden Fry-all his pictures show him wearing Iowa gear. No NT and no Southern Meth), came to town and convinced many, me included, that we should drop out of the MVC and go independent and we were never heard from again. Beat Middle GO MEAN GREEN

  21. I remember one year when a a heavily favored MUTS team came to Denton and got beat by a team that had no business beating them. Then the team that had no business beating that team went on to win the conference. Don't know how "sexy" this MUTS team is though.....that team was AWFULLY sexy

  22. UNT faculty and staff just received an email outlining a free ticket promotion for faculty & staff for the Marshall game. It sounds like the aim is for this to be an annual event. Not only is it great to see this kind of outreach by the new AD, but it is good to see some new thinking about ways that UNT can get more people interested in UNT football. Here is the blurb from the email: Staff Senate and Athletics are partnering to debut the Staff and Faculty Appreciation tradition, which will provide each UNT faculty and staff member with two free tickets. Employees can purchase additional tickets for only $5. The game will also feature tailgating and a friendly competition between UNT divisions.

  27. The trivia question was who was the last QB to start at 3-2. I don't really recall them going into much detail about when the last time a team started their season at 3-2.

  28. You were actually planning on either listening or watching this season?
    3 points
  29. Exactly! I just checked and we were 4-1 in 66, 4-0-1 in 67, 4-1 in 68 and 3-2 in 69 while in the NCAA University (Major college) division. That included wins over Louisville, Colorado State, New Mexico State and UTEP. So instead of the best start in over 100 years, it would be the best start since 1994. North Texas football data here.

  31. Just rewatched the Rice game highlight. I'm not saying Fine is lighting up the stats shit. But he is managing the game well and minimizing mistakes. He is also showing unbelievable leadership, pose, toughness and charisma. And he is showing all this with just being in Denton a little over 2 months. It is exciting to think what the product will look like when he has a full offseasom under his belt with Graham and Seth. Fun times are ahead of us in New Denton i believe

  34. My wife was perplexed that Les Miles was fired from LSU. We looked up his record and he hasn't won less than 8 games since 2002, has gone to a bowl game each year since 2002, and has taken his team to 2 national championships, winning one, since 2002. 14 winning seasons in the last 14 years. "Why the HELL was he fired?" she asked. "UNT would be all OVER that dude, right?" she asked. Yes, dear, we would. We've only had 4 winning seasons and 4 bowl games in the last 14 years. "Oh to be mediocre", I said. "Mediocre?" She asked. What makes you think 4-10 in the last 14 years is mediocre?" ...she has a good point. I mention all this to say I hope that Smatz and TheWren will FINALLY change the mindset of "mediocrity" around here. We must do better and I think we will do better. I hope it starts with the MUTS game on Saturday. Seth has this team grinding it out. Let's #hit3 with a win.

  39. SL gave a great answer about Middle: that they spread it, aren't pass happy, he's known Franklin, the D Coordinator likes to give different looks. Bret followed that with "yeah the QB is good right? Gotta be tough?" I realize he isn't too interested in the nitty gritty of football strategy but he could have explored the Franklin thing more, asked about going against a similar offense and how that helps/hurts prep, Could also have followed up on SL's mention of coaches learning. I know i was critical of GH and his calls. How have Seth and Graham improved/learned from the first four games etc.

  41. In the end it always comes down to the money. Be it a coach, Dr., Methodist Preacher etc..... Why don't coaches stay loyal and build their legacy? Because schools don't stay loyal to them. Neither side is at fault for this, it's just part of the job.
