Brett reached out to me last week to get my take on the 10th anniversary of the opening of Apogee Stadium. While I will not go into a lot of the details of the story he is publishing, I will echo some of my thoughts here. If you want to read the whole story, sign up for Brett's newsletter. I spoke about the student vote, and how the credit for the students voting in favor of the new athletic fee should go to several people. While I had a role in drafting the bill in the Student Senate, others such as Jeff Kline and Blake Windham deserve just as much credit, if not more. They were the younger guys, they had more facetime with students, and they did a lot of work. I spoke to some student groups, I wrote opinion pieces for the NT Daily, I created the Facebook group Students for a New Stadium that had over 2,000 members, and I purchased campaign signs and planted them around the campus perimeter. But the real credit goes to the students who showed up to vote. They made an informed decision in the face of stiff opposition from some very vocal student groups. I also talked about how far we've come. While the product on the field over the last 10 years has been hit or miss, the progress has met our expectations. We got out of the Sun Belt, attendance improved, recruiting is better, donations increased, and we got some bowl games. We also have a new soccer stadium/track facility, and a great football practice facility. There's more in Brett's newsletter. But I just wanted to drop in and say that I'm proud of what we did. I don't know what is going to happen in college football over the next 5 years, but we put ourselves in a much better position. Go Mean Green!24 points

The first voice you heard was from Jitter Nolen, NTSU's president at that time who was instrumental in bringing Fry to Denton. The second voice was that of Fry. BTW, Nolen died at the age of 95 just a few weeks ago. These excerpts were taken from a film called "Coach" which documented Fry's early days at North Texas leading to the epic game with SMU. Dabney Coleman was the producer and Newt Razor paid for the whole thing. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc1040494/m1/?fbclid=IwAR23n_KIXG59uKopXG1JMYgUBdwGdeujpqqMoIuBXHcgrg29rJE4cvOp_Kk#track/112 points

I got a GREEN blanket. My dog immediately chewed a hole in it. He didn't go to North Texas. He went to obedience school. Didn't graduate.11 points

The first time I saw that uniform was against UTA (I think) at Texas Stadium. I thought it was the greatest uniform I’d ever seen. Still is. Stylized Eagle.9 points

I know a lot of people will go to Bonfire, but if you aren't going (or don't mind going late), I'll be headlining one night only at 8 and 10 pm at Hyena's Comedy Club in downtown Fort Worth. The last show I did there sold out, so we are keeping 2 shows now to accommodate for more crowds since a bunch of people got turned away last time. I remember going to Willis Library and watching "Coach" in the spring of 1980, my first semester as a transfer from the university of Texas. What an awesome share, Lets. I wish every incoming student would take a look. GMG5 points

Darden made the 53-man roster: https://www.buccaneers.com/news/bucs-initial-53-man-roster-reaction-2021-training-camp "Darden appears to have beaten out Jaydon Mickens for the return job, thus securing the sixth spot."5 points

If anything I've learned in my time from UNT and post graduation, UNT fans don't quit. EVER. We've been through the worst, we dream of the best, and we complain the whole way. But every single one of you guys are passionate and dedicated, which is what makes this board so much fun. Like minded and hopelessly optimistic!4 points

After we graduated, Jeff used to use the successful stadium vote as an attempted pick up line to woo women of our similar ilk (who came from UT, A&M, Kansas, Arizona, Indiana, NYU, GW, Georgetown, Wash U- STL, etc) when we would go to young professionals events in Dallas. The tactic never really worked, but I always thoroughly enjoyed watching it play out and letting one more person in on the magic going on at UNT.4 points

oh, I knew exactly what article he was going to link. Not just an opinion piece, but one co-authored by one of the developers of Ivermectin…and an opinion piece that a day later the WSJ published a retraction on due to one of studies cited had been discredited.4 points

Maybe his problem here was Littrell made him use the laces...4 points

Lol, I'm not upset, just need to clarify the mistake, because that's how misinformation starts. You baited citing this article by asking earlier if the WSJ is a reputable source... then when CBL called you on it, you posted an OPINION piece from them. Without pointing out the difference, you're insinuating that the WSJ is endorsing the user of a de-wormer to fight Covid19... when they're not. At best, it was an oversight by you. And that's fine, just needs to be clarified. At worst, you're being intellectually dishonest in citing the article as an endorsement from the WSJ.4 points

In each season 2015 - 2019 (2020 not applicable because of Covid scheduling changes), Northwestern State played one game against and FBS opponent... 2015 - Mississippi State Bulldogs (9-4 overall, Belk Bowl victory) 2016 - Baylor Bears (7-6 overall, Motel Six Cactus Bowl victory) 2017 - Louisiana Tech (7-6 overall, DXL Frisco Bowl victory) 2018 - Texas A&M (9-4 overall, TaxSlayer Gator Bowl victory) 2019 - LSU (15-0 overall, CFP National Championship victory) Notice a trend? Pretty sure our Mean Green are guaranteed a bowl victory this season.3 points

We owe UNTFlyer so much love for helping lead us away from Toilet Bowl Fouts and getting to enjoy beautiful Apogee, The administration promised Todd Dodge he'd get a new stadium when he left SLC. While he was a disaster as a head coach here, the ONLY thing he did that was positive was continually bringing up the fact that he was promised a new stadium would get built. But it took UNTFlyer and his role with the SGA to actually make a referendum happen. When it passed, watching all the hand-wringing that occurred in the usual spots around here about paying for a new stadium on the backs of future students, it was just glorious to so many of us who believed that this day would never happen. I suspect, and its just my opinion, that UNTFlyer probably imagined this place really taking off as a winning program once Apogee was built and we got into CUSA. He was a new alumnus, was positive about what was going on, and where we looked to be headed. But the losing appears to have taken its toll on him--which it usually does to the folks who actually care about our football program. I hope he stays with the program and will be here for decades as a fan/supporter. But if he doesn't, we still owe him a level of gratitude that a simple thanks doesn't provide. He walked the walk, while so many others talked the talk just to avoid ever having to spend anything more on the program than they had to. I think about him every single time I go to a UNT game at Apogee.3 points

I gotta say... I'll keep my eye on him up there. I think we all doubt any success at all in Kansas, but let's see. If he balls out and has a great season up there, I'll be happy for him.3 points

I loved that 30 For 30 show about the SMU Death Penalty. It should have received an Emmy or at least a 🦅Scrappy. •••Always wondered if SMU AD Bob “Smiley” Hitch🙄 set up that microphone that appeared to almost end the life of the NCAA official who grabbed hold of it. ••• I loved that the SMU player who got all that SMU stuff started came from my birth city—Angleton freakin’ Texas. Channel 8’s Dale Hansen made the kid a Texas hero with so many across the state. His name was David Stanley & he was a purdy’ fair football player for the purple & white AHS Wildcats. (Don’t think he ever made the SMU Mustang Athletic Hall of Fame but I’ll check & get back). ••• Next time that particular 30/30 show repeats I will gleefully watch it again. I am one of many on GMG who also thinks SMU has still not changed their ways—it’s just seems to be a DNA thing. 🦅❇️🦅3 points
