Even if half of Kinne's starters were actually from Incarnate Word, the idea that bringing in a bunch of Incarnate Word players was an advantage for him is far-fetched. For the love of God it's Incarnate Word! A school that small which wasn't playing even FCS football 12 years ago isn't churning out players who can win at the FBS level.

If Morris had arrived and brought in five Incarnate Word transfers we'd have thought "sweet Jesus our cupboard was bare."

UIW was one of the best FCS in the country the last two seasons.. If we played them last year I am not sure we would have beat them. Yes bringing in half of the starters already familiar with the staff and system is a huge advantage that we can't over look.

I just went back and looked at several newspaper articles from when he was hired. He was most certainly NOT a big risk. Multiple news articles praised him as a PAC-12 OC last year. Here's just one from the Seattle Times. Morris built a winning program at UIW and his recruits are now crucial to Texas State's current success. 

A LOT of people on this board were strongly in favor of hiring a successful P5 coordinator with successful head coaching experience at a lower division and Texas ties. That's exactly what NT did!

Don’t know the answers to all of these but I know the DC was Justin Deason who is now an assistant at New Braunfels Canyon HS. He must’ve had some success because he won a D2 title at TAMU-C with Carthel.

After diving into Deason, he is a product of Bill Clay, who ran a 3-4 and is currently a defensive analyst at OSU (Was the DC under Les Miles from 2001-2004, when Deason played).

I imagine it's a similar system with a 3 man front. Deason's defenses did, however cause a lot of turnovers - Most of his defenses at TAMUC and UIW were top in multiple categories in the nation.  Majority of his coaching career has been D2/FCS though. Morris knows him well, so I'm sure there's a reason he didn't bring him along.

If you’re a G5 program, you’d be really smart to look at a great regional FCS program to poach their coach and get their players to transfer. As was mentioned earlier, getting upperclassmen that are used to a coach’s system and moving them up against G5s that aren’t really good, you’ll do fine. Texas State is showing just that. We just didn’t look at that when we hired Morris. Doesn’t mean he will fail, but it makes his efforts to recruit and develop HUGE!!

Coaches should just get paid a ratio percentage of wins to losses. If Morriss ends up 3-9 then 3/9 = 33% of his salary 

Win all games and get 100% ... lose them all don't get paid at all.

The latest national figures show that Eric Morris is a good offensive coach.  The passing offense is rated 13th in the nation.  The run offensive is #36 nationally.  We are ranked #11 in total offense.  Not too many new coaches will beat that kind of performance.

Now flip it to defense.  The pass defense is #47.  That's a good number but the problem is we do not get thrown against very often.  That's the only decent defensive number. Both the rushing defense and the total defense rank 133 (dead last).  

Those figures tell that the run defense should be changed unless the team being played does not have a good run offense; in which case the 3-5-5 should be able to stop a passing team.  It seems a rather simple fix; get the best available DC to replace the current one.  Applications, anyone?
