  1. My recollection is Ruder was never the starter at UNC but Gunnell was the starter for Arizona for the entire 2020 season. Ruder threw 7 passes in 3 seasons at UNC while Gunnell threw 248 in 1 and a half at Zona.

  2. Respectfully, I'm wondering if many of y'all know who this kid was in HS. Him coming to UNT is Mason Fine-esque in one specific category. He has the Texas HS record for most career TDs (195) and passing yards (16,108). I actually saw a ranking recently of the greatest Texas high school QBs of all-time and this kid was in it. All-American second team his senior year. I'm wondering if coming from a catholic private school hurt his recruiting stock (like Fine coming from a small Oklahoma school) but then again, it never hurt Bishop Dunne. Gunnell is also 6'6" so he should look like a man amongst boys at the C-USA level. Time will tell. As for me, I'm excited about football for the first time since Fine.

  3. I’m at the point that I need to see it before I get excited. I jumped on the Ruder train last year and it was a major kick in the nuts. I don’t want that again

  4. I don't care who our quarterback is. I want us to pick the one that works the hardest in practice and learns to execute the plays consistently. I want multiple quarterbacks to get reps before the start of the season so the coaches can see and evaluate their abilities. Once the season starts, I want them to pick the one that is most likely to succeed and give them the vast majority of reps and playing time. Exactly which quarterback isn't important. I'm not at every practice so I can't possibly judge which young man will be best for the job.

  9. From my Memphis alum friend (donor/perennial season ticket holder): They didn’t want him to leave, but we had a freshman that ended up playing last year when Gunnell was hurt. Gunnel is big time. GMG

  10. Memphis spring game results and article. Looks like a hotshot freshman QB was pushing both veterans too.... https://sports.yahoo.com/quarterback-competition-explosive-plays-learned-023516221.html Grant Gunnell details right leg injury recovery.... https://www.commercialappeal.com/story/sports/2022/03/23/memphis-football-quarterback-grant-gunnell-move-past-season-ending-injury/7121671001/ Grant Gunnell transfers.... "Gunnell returns to his native Texas, where he's still the state's all-time leader in passing yards for high school quarterbacks. There's also a chance he could return to Memphis this season. North Texas faces Memphis at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium on Sept. 24. If both Gunnell and Henigan are healthy, both will likely be the starting quarterbacks on opposite sidelines." https://www.commercialappeal.com/story/sports/college/memphis-tigers/2022/05/12/grant-gunnell-transfers-memphis-north-texas-quarterback/9752924002/

  12. We heard the same hype about Ruder. We'll see. I hope he's everything as advertised. I still think Aune is the starter day 1.

  13. NORTH!!! ... TEXAS!!! Our North Texas Softball Team destroyed the CUSA Regular Season Champions Louisiana Tech Lady Dawgs 11-1 today to advance to the CUSA Tournament Championship Game. Opponent will be determined by games later today. Game starts at 12:00 , Lovelace Softball Stadium , Admission is only $10 for adults and even cheaper for students and children. This is the last spectator event at North Texas for this school year, Please Come Support The Team If You Can. Wear Green and Be Loud. This game will be on national television. Try to get there a little early, high school graduations at the Super Pit may cause minor traffic delays. ***This post was placed in the football forum to maximize exposure only because of the magnitude of the event.***

  14. Seems to be good on the surface. Maybe this will be the one. But honestly, Tom Brady could join the program...it's still difficult for me to get excited as we roll our HC with a 37-38 overall record out for year 7. Hopefully he proves me wrong.

  15. I have doubts about this coaching staff, unless they bring back GH, to effectively coach any QB. He has a lot to learn (playbook) and a whole new team to get familiar with in a very short time.

  16. Actually impressed by this pick up. Definitely have some cautious optimism

  17. Good thing he was at Arizona 3 yrs ago

  18. I second the cautious optimism here. He actually played, the stats look pretty decent (65+% completions), there are warning signs (not winning competition at memphis this spring), but they aren't killer. That said, he will not have that much time to get into the system and the rest of the offense obviously needs to be good enough for a slight to medium QB upgrade to matter.

  19. Some experience is better than none, however the argument could be made that Arizona has been among the worst teams in the country the last 2 years. With limited time I see this being a big uphill battle to get even the #2 spot but I will always welcome more solid competition in the QB room. Hope Gunnell can be what we are waiting for!

  20. Let's slow the extension talk until the kid at least gets into a game for NT. Here are his college stats from ESPN: https://www.espn.com/college-football/player/_/id/4427351/grant-gunnell

  21. This is likely the best QB transfer we've ever gotten. I agree this is huge for Littrell, and I'm cautiously optimistic. In my opinion, the reason to be more confident in Gunnell succeeding here compared to transfers like Morris, Ruder, Earle, and Head is that Gunnell has respectable playing experience against P5 teams. We'll see what happens...but this could be good.

  22. Yes, we need birthday updates. Everyone knows he transferred to Jackson State.

  23. Dude has gotten some actual playing time. Have to wait and see, but that's a big difference from our previous transfers. I'm all for more competition at this position. We know what we've had since Fine left hasn't been good enough.

  24. Was a 3 star - .8851 rated QB in the 2019 class with offers from AZ, AZ St., Ohio St., TAMU, Alabama, Arkansas, Baylor, CA, Central Arkansas, FL. St., Georgia, Hawaii, Houston, IN, Iowa, KU, Louisville, LSU, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi St., Missouri, NE, UNC, Northwestern, OK St., Ole Miss, Oregon, Pitt, Purdue, smu, TCU, TN, TSU-SM, TX Tech, Tulane, UCF, UCLA, Vanderbilt and Wisconsin. He signed with Arizona, entered the portal in December 2020 and signed with Memphis before entering the portal again and committing to us. I hope he has found a home and recaptures the magic that made him such a sought after recruit in high school. https://247sports.com/Player/Grant-Gunnell-84631/

  27. As an Allen HS grad, I am thrilled to see him go. He still stunk like SMU to me. I couldnt let go of the hate.

  28. Crazy late addition, hopefully he spurs some good play from all QB's. He was the majority starter at Zona, in 2020 they only played 5 games, and he played in four of them. I liked the Zona/USC vid someone had, even his bad plays looked alright

  29. I don't see how school size and playing in a small district didn't affect Fine's recruitment. He had the stats and accolades yet got 1 D1 FBS offer. You see it all the time with players from non-power football states and/or playing 2A. In my opinion, highlight videos don't matter as much in football as they do in basketball. You can't get hot from 3 during a tournament in football and you can't dominate both sides of the field in the same manner in football. Much less of an individual game and you're competition has as much to do about the perception of your talent as anything else.

  30. Ruder started under the same circumstance. It can be done especially if his talent level is there. Him having played and started P5 games I hope will make a big difference.

  31. Overall this will be the most talented qb room Seth has had. Now let's see what he can do with it.

  32. Watching his highlights from AZ the guy was running for his life. I think blocking was a suggestion on the AZ team he was on. No time makes it hard to throw the ball. I don't know if he is the answer but I hope he is.

  34. The Quarterbacks Not gonna beat around the bush here...Gunnell was better. Period.

  35. Gunnell’s is a whole different level guy. He started at Arizona as a true sophomore. This is a big pickup for Seth.

  36. I had the same thought, however after researching some of the Memphis sites, it was apparent that Gunnell looked very good in the spring. I think he would have been welcomed back with open arms by Memphis. They just have a very good QB in Hennegan and Gunnell’s saw UNT as a place he could start right away.

  37. Haha, you’re funny. If Ruder was able to “win” the job last year in a few short weeks, Gunnell will be your week 1 starter without question.

  38. Kid appears to have talent, and he should help us. My question is what QB other than Fine has gotten better since arriving here under Littrell? Seems like since Grant Harrell left we have sucked in the developing of QB's.

  42. Yeah I was watching that video too... he was running for his life the whole time, but as the game went on, he clearly got more comfortable and did what he had to do to make plays.
