That's a nice theory, Tipper Gore. But if that's the cause, why wouldn't Britain, Canada, Australia, Japan, France, etc. have similar levels of violent crimes (per capita) as the U.S. even though they generally have the same access to this "art" as the U.S. does?

More homogenous populations than the U.S.:

Britian: white 87.2%, black/African/Caribbean/black British 3%, Asian/Asian British: Indian 2.3%, Asian/Asian British: Pakistani 1.9%, mixed 2%, other 3.7% (2011 est.)

Australia: white 92%, Asian 7%, aboriginal and other 1%

Japan: Japanese 98.5%, Koreans 0.5%, Chinese 0.4%, other 0.6%

Canada:

France: France's highly centralized government and top-to-bottom administration can keep tabs on myriad ways its 64.1 million population is evolving except in terms of its racial make-up. The prohibition on using ethnic or religious data — even if volunteered — means France can do no better than estimate that its population includes 4 to 7 million Arabs, 3 to 5 million blacks, some 1.5 million Asians, and around 600,000 Jews (http://content.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1887106,00.html)

Name for me the British, Canadian, Japanese, French, and Australian metal and rap groups extolling the virtues of cop killin', rape, and such. Or, how about their equivalents of Quentin Tarantino. Or, their plethora of violence-based television programmes equal to The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Dexter, Sons Of Anarchy, and the like.

Serious face...

UCR statistics from the FBI are tough to link to cleanly directly, though looking at year-by-year stuff through the FBI data, it all seems to sync up with this compiled table here. NOTE: I have no idea what that site is all about. I'm not worried about getting hit by a tornado or stockpiling seeds for the apocalypse... It's just nice that they took all the violent crime data from the UCRs and put them on one screen together. If it's some sort of weird doomsday/Stormfront type site, let me know and I'll go through frustrating individual links on the FBI site.

Violent crimes rates (meaning: murder/rape/robbery/assault) for 1970 - 1979 (per 100,000 inhabitants)

High: 548.9 (1979)

Low: 363.5 (1970)

Average across 10 years: 451.7

Violent crime rates for 2003 - 2012 (per 100,000)

High: 475.8 (2003)

Low: 386.9 (2012)

Average across 10 years: 441.6

Murder in particular tells a very different story... During the most recent 10 years where data is available, the rate per 100,000 inhabitants has never gone over 5.7. From 70-79, it was never lower than 7.9 and peaked at 9.8. And again, that's coming from FBI statistics.

If we're a violent culture today because of rap music (the earliest recorded hip-hop music having been released in 1979), Quentin Tarantino (who didn't release a movie until 1992), or because people are watching The Walking Dead instead of Hawaii Five-O... Why is it that violent crimes are happening less frequently than they did back in the 70's?

If internet porn is making us violent... Why is the murder rate lower at every point in the past ten years than it was at any point in the 70's?

Similar question for racial homogeneity. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_racial_and_ethnic_demographics_of_the_United_States

Non-hispanic white people were 83.5% of the population in 1970, 63.7% in 2010. If it's about racial diversity... Why isn't violent crime higher now that America is more racially heterogeneous than ever?

Dear Harry,

I know we've personally discussed this in the past...but, I could not help myself. It is far too easy with this crowd. It was a slow morning at the office, and it happened so fast! Please, forgive me.

I'll just go ahead and skip over the un-intentional racism.

At least for Britain...Dizzee Rascal, Gunshot, Silver Bullet, Wiley, II Tone Committee...Guy Ritchie...Good Cop, Ripper Street...oh...and this wonderful VERY FIRST SCENE from 2002 show Spooks http://www.theguardian.com/media/2002/may/21/broadcasting?guni=Article:in%20body%20link

Also...some regular musical acts inj my iPod rotation are Arctic Monkeys (UK), The Dears (Canada), Chihiro Yamakazi (Japan), Edith Piaf (France) and Colin Hay (Australia). I wonder if people in other countries have any access to American music/movies/TV?

A partial answer lies in more professional law enforcement and an increase in technology in fighting crime (AFIS data base, DNA data base, combined computer data bases that allow a police officer on Texas to input a person's name and see if they were arrested just about anywhere in the US the previous month).

Also, cameras are everywhere. First thing you do is scour the scene for any cameras and get the video. They could be across the street at a private residence.

How does this stop murder? Well, it's definitely a deterrent, but where it really comes in to play is stopping repeat offenders. It's extremely hard to get away with one murder nowadays, much less 2, 3, or 4).

It also helps catch a violent armed robber before he becomes a capital murderer. ,

My Step mother is a CPA and I glad to say she does my taxes every year, already got my refund back this year. I am just glad this year I did not have to write a check to the IRS.

You seriously think you didn't send a check to the IRS? Check how much you sent in and how much you got back. Silly boy. Fooled by the IRS again into sending them more cash than required, getting no "return" on that cash and then being happy you got part of it back...minus any interest of course.
