North Texas landed a defensive lineman after all over the weekend. Tevinn Cantly, a 6-4, 292-pounder from Arlington Lamar confirmed on Monday night that he has committed to play for the Mean Green.

UNT was the only Division I school to offer Cantly a scholarship, but Fordham, Stony Brook, Northern Iowa and Missouri State showed interest. Cantly started on the varsity team for just one season and didn't settle in as a defensive lineman until the end of the season. He didn't make the all-district team, but has the frame to be a Division I player.

The addition of Cantly came on a weekend when two of UNT's other defensive line targets elected to play elsewhere. Defensive end Shane McCardell of Beaumont Westbook committed to Baylor and Miami transfer Chris Perry committed to Texas Tech.

Do you really "land" a player like this, or does he just chose to play at your school when you are the lone D1 school offering a scholarship? Actually, from reading this, it appears we are the only one's that even offered a scholarship period.

I tend to agree with Monkeypox here. We have all seen even a walk-on get a ride and turn out to be a shining star. If we get a great DC and other good coaches we can help this guy and others excel. We can't buy players but the system isn't all wrong if we buy a coach or two that can chip the carbon away from this potential diamond!! Welcome the kid, give him a chance and lets see what the coaches can do. Its all good!

OK, so we've finally recruited the Tazmanian Devil and he even has his own MySpace Page . (warning, turn down your speakers if you're old) Maybe some of you plumminci "young guns" can tell us what's on his site; I'm far too old for that stuff. Obviously he announces something because his last corresponance is a congrats on getting the scholarship.

Oh, and his girlfriend Sarah calls him her BF and Boo, whatever that means. Hopefully that will strike fear in opposing quarterbacks.

In keeping with my tendency to provide historical information/perspective, I offer this.

Cedric Hardman (68-69, the other all-pro lineman that we keep forgetting about), supposedly transferred to North Texas as a safety. Before he left, he had grown into a 6'4" X 240lbs DE and was a high draft choice of the SF 49ers.

The license plate on his car said "NASTY". I'm told that he earned that nickname while he was still at North Texas.

The most positive thing that I saw about this yong man was that he used to play TE, which means that he has some speed.......at least before he started growing.

My question is this. Who made the assessment on this young man and then advised Coach Dodge to pull the trigger on this offer? I'd feel a lot better if it was someone like Chuck Peterson, or "Lefty", rather than one of the other first year coaches.

BTW, Stony Brooke is in Stony Brook N.Y.

Their web-site gives you the impression that they are the MIT of New York. Between S.B. and Fordham being interested, it sounds like this young man will not be an academic liability.

According to todays DRC he was recruited by Mendoza initially and he "fell out of touch with UNT's coaches until recently". He said he is looking forward to the LSU game.

I grew up in Stony Brook, and my parents still live there. I even went there for a year (78-79) before I convinced my parents to let me go to North Texas to study music.

Stony Brook was started in the '60s with land donated by Ward Melville, who had inherited the Thom McAnn shoe fortune (and who my HS is named after). He had dreams of a "William & Mary" Colonial-style small college. The State University of NY (SUNY) system had other ideas. By the '70s, they were constructing new buildings left & right, trying to create the "Berkeley of the East". What they did create was the ugliest campus in the state. No surprise that when I got to NT, I thought the campus was beautiful (and still do!). They have built Stony Brook into a well-respected school for the sciences, and they have a large teaching hospital, but it's no Berkeley.

Back in the 70's, Stony Brook was a pretty radical place - a reputation as a drug school, student socialist & communist organizations, bomb threats almost daily, etc. Students either couldn't give a damn about sports or outright hated it because it was part of "the establishment". The school used to be Div III, and had no stadium. Given the area's history dating back to the revolutionary war, the team name was the "Patriots" (same as my High School).

Somewhere in the late '90s, a new president decided to start moving Stony Brook up to Div I, changed the team name to the "Sea Wolves", and managed to get a small stadium built. It looks like it holds all of 5,000 people: Stony Brook Stadium. The stadium is named for a local politician, who undoubted helped them get the funding from the state.

I guess they've managed to get to I-AA?! I can't believe we were competing with them for a recruit!

Stony Brook's enrollment was around 15,000 back in '78; I don't think it's that much more now. Even though there are plenty of dorms, most of the students are from Long Island, so it has the same stigma as a "Commuter School" as NT.

Wow?... that stadium is tiny. I guess Fouts looks pretty good to a recruit who has seen fields like that one? The kid has size, and that is enough to start with in my book. Let Coach Deloach figure out how best to polish the kid. (Yes, I'm still counting on Coach D)

Cedric Hardman's nickname while at NT was, indeed, "Nasty". I seem to recall attending a few two-a-day practices and watched Cedric run from the tailback position. Glad he found his nitche at DE.

According to DCTF when he was listed at 6'3" 260, he ran a 4.9...pretty good for someone that size.

One small detail left out of the story on Cantly, like, uh, the speed factor? Anything listed on his speed anywhere? Of course, quickness would figure in, too.

I concur to the Larry Lacewell theory (and always have before he said it) when in his interview on the MGRN he said most non BCS schools (I hate that combo of words, too, GrayEagleOne); but most of us from that group are most always going to recruit "projects" when it comes to the "big boy" OL and DL recruits. FWIW, so will several schools from some of the Big 6 conferences if you think about it. Of course, every once in a while we'll hit solid gold (Rival's 3 stars and up) recruits, but get used to "projects" all you young gun plumminci's if you want to stay in line with the rest of the stars in this universe.

Hmmm? plumminci some of you are saying? Who knows, I may now just start a fake (cult) christian religion & run for president of........................... the Teamsters Union.

Who knows (but the shadow) how far up to the next level our recruiting will go when we build a true NCAA D1-A football palace out at the Mean Green Village.

Considering he's only 17 and how much he's grown in the past season...he should fill out at a legit 6'4" 300+ pounds...cliche' expression, but you can't coach size.

Add to the fact that he has to be pretty smart to be considering Fordham and Stony Brook...and this seems like a good risk on a project player. Tasty may've been joking around, but this really may be like a DD diamond in the rough find.

by 2 a days in the fall. Plus, DE/DT Drayland Ross, 6-3, 280 will

be another 300 pounder. Will these 3 guys be the difference

makers the DL needs? I think all 3 will be very good DT's that

will be at NT for another 2-3 years, which will give Canty and

Franklin time to develop.

Donot forget another project, Fr Jacob Kaiser, 6-7, 290 at OT.

This guy could develop into a dominate OT in a year or two.

Maybe I was just hoping for some immediate help at DL positions, but,

I must say the future does look very good.

I've said this many times before, all-district honors don't mean a thing. That stuff, especially on the H.S. level, is so political it can be sickening. If you're on a bad team and do great, you may get nothing. You could have two studs in your conference at the same position who beat you out. Does that mean your not deserving? No, all three of you could be college caliber players. You can be average player on a great team and get all-conference because of the attention people around you get. Then, you have the coaches (not all of them) who say, "You vote for my kid here and I'll vote for you kid there."

You can't compare one district to another district's honors. You don't know the level of competition, the strenght of the district or the individual players w/whom you compete against for those honors in a particular district. And more importantly, that changes every year.

What I would like to see, which I'm sure the coaches have, is what he's done lined up across from other D1 talent. If he's held his own then at his size and our need he's worth the risk.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for the kid and hope he turns out to be a sleeper but I can't get too excited about a kid who only has one year of experience on the Varsity level and now somehow he's ready to play D1 college football. If that's the case, where's my scholarship?

I'm glad to have him and see him red-shirting this year and not playing until the 2010 season, so I'm perfectly happy to see how he develops in the next two years. Don't forget, but Michael Jordan was cut from his HS team and Brad Kassell was a little known HS QB out of Llano.
