  1. He wasn't pulled too early. He was not mobile enough for our offensive line at the time. Fine has the ability to move and create. Morris didn't. By the time the bowl game came around, the line could better protect a pocket passer. Our coaches did what gave the team the best chance to win...as they should.

  3. Preach. I believe us UTSA and a few smaller schools were QB offers rest as WR/DB and that's bull crap they lowered his rating. Ive tweeted Brian Peronni to ask how a rating drops after a kids page is updated with offers. We shall see what he says.

  12. Getting a commitment from a kid we've offered like Davis Brin: http://247sports.com/Recruitment/Davis-Brin-94497/RecruitInterests Why? (1) Brin has multiple offers from FBS with some FCS mixed in, but the majority of the offers are from FBS schools. What that says is during camps and on film, several FBS coaches see similarities in him and FBS QBs they've coached before and know can succeed at the FBS level. (2) Two of the FBS offers are from San Diego State and Tulsa. Why does that matter? Well, Tulsa is coached by former Baylor OC/QB coach Philip Montgomery, whose Golden Hurricane squad just set is shit ton of records last season with their version of the spread. If Montgomery thinks this kid is worth a scholarship, he's worth a scholarship. Ditto with the San Diego State offer. Aztec head coach Rocky Long has been successful at New Mexico and now San Diego State, neither of which are consider traditional powers. He took New Mexico to five bowl games in 10 seasons there, all five in his last seven seasons. He's guided San Diego State to bowl games in all six seasons he's been there. The Aztecs have won 11 games each of the past two season, rare territory for that program. (During last year's bowl game, they spotted our beloved Houston Cougars a 10-0 lead in the first quarter before waxing them 34-0 in the remaining three quarters. By the way...while on the topic...did anyone see where Houston QB Greg Ward, Jr. was drafted? Oh...he wasn't drafted? Never mind.) Rocky has been a head coach at G5-level programs since 1998. Before that, he was defensive coordinator at then Pac-10 schools UCLA and Oregon State. In short, if anyone knows G5-level talent, it's Rocky Long. So, if Littrell beats Philip Montgomery and Rocky Long for a recruit both have offered, that would say something. And, that is simply the crux of the matter at all positions for all recruits. Coaches see the kids at camps. They see them on film. They know who probably will and will not pan out in the FBS, whether P5 or G5. You simply can't pooh-pooh the successes of guys like Montgomery and Long. If they've offered, it means something. So, if Littrell beats them, it will mean something. And, by the same measure, it only makes sense that it also means something if the only schools we are beating are FCS and Division II. I'll hold to this belief because of how public recruiting is in the second decade of the 21st century with game film and camps everywhere - very, very few truly "slip through the cracks." And, so, you can't just build a roster on "slip through the crack" guys. You have to start winning some real head-to-head battles with guys like Philip Montgomery and Rocky Long. I know that sound like a tall order, but...no one is resting on their laurels in college football. As a coaching staff, you have to compete with other coaching staffs 365 days a year. The wins and losses during the season are in direct correlation to the wins and losses during the off-season. I love you all. Dearly. And, also, those RX Energy Herbal Tonics that Arizona tea makes. 14. Did they? I remember him being a 2 on Rivals when he committed. Who else has Rivals dropped a ranking for that you're referencing?
    1 point
  15. Borderline star players are known to get a boost or drop in stars pending their offers and/or commit, particularly by rivals. 247 is more accurate and consistent. Now 247 will dip or boost rankings during camping season, whereas rivals will base it a boost or drop off of a commit. Alabama, Ohio St, OU, etc. see this to their advantage year in and year out. It's never been known to be a perfect system, but the more rivals does this, the more credibility 247 garners.
    1 point
  16. Apparantely he's a 3 star per 247 but his composite score is lowered due to his rivals ranking.
    1 point
  17. I believe it's because stars are relative and points aren't. IOW, as time has gone on, you'll find that the criteria (points for each star level) is rising. So, as more kids below get more offers from bigger schools, their number rating goes up, so does their ranking, so does their star rating. So, if you were the #1, 5-star recruit with 32 big time offers in week one, and 65 dudes got 33 big time offers the next week, your number rating would stay the same, but your ranking and star rating would drop, because you got jumped and having 65 dudes ahead of you would drop you to a 4-star prospect. Hope that makes sense.

  19. 24/7 listed him as an athlete, but everything I read from Harris and UTSA coaches indicates that he was recruited as a QB and was told he would have the opportunity to start early as a QB.
    1 point
  20. FWIW, Frank Harris was recruited as an ATH, but it is certainly possible that he may be given a shot to play QB.
    1 point
  21. FYI, Sturm is a senior this year. Jaylon Henderson is no longer with the team. He is now at TVCC. Jared Johnson was a senior last year and is not on the 2017 roster. Frank Harris may end up playing QB, but he was recruited as an athlete. Currently, behind Sturm utsa has Manny Harris and Bryce Rivers plus a transfer walkon, Brandon Garza, from UH. They have talent in Manny Harris and Rivers behind Sturm, but not a lot of quantity at the moment. Maybe Frank Harris will get a shot at QB when he arrives. I think the word may be getting out regarding the QB position in San Antonio, much like when Mac was here. Wilson seems to want a bus driver. Sturm averaged 166 yds/game and 23 attempts/game last season. Not exactly going to attract top QB talent now that other coaches can use historical numbers to show that Wilson wants to run the same offense that Mac ran.

  24. If this is true, then he wasn't given a real fair chance without a RS year.

  25. It should be noted that UTSA's QB commit last year (Bryce Rivers) was rated as a 0.7971 3 star recruit. Bean is rated as a 0.7958 2 star recruit. This is why I don't like saying we have X 3 star recruits. 1) Recruits take a rating hit just for committing to us & 2) 0.0013 is the difference between being considered a 2 and a 3 star commit.

  30. Interesting point made by Coach McCasland to me this last week...all CUSA teams' RPI's fall once conference play begins due to the quality of the conference teams. He really thinks the conference is better than it's rating, but hopes as UNT improves...and other conference teams improve...RPI's might increase during league play and CUSA can become more than a "a bid league". His examples were, of course, Middle and Western who often have decent ROI's in OOC play, but see their ROI's drop once conference play begins. BTW...he is pretty positive about seeing a nice win total improvement this year!

  31. We already knew that from yesterday. Posted it in another thread. He and Allen were offered within days of each other. I wondered about that and Colorado State because yesterday morning, no one was listing La Tech or Colorado State as offers. But, to me, it doesn't matter. The point is, pulled offer or not, at one time or another, two coaches with very good track records of competing at the G5 level thought he was good enough. To me, this is a different situation than Raveon Hoston having offers pulled by bigger programs. Hoston was simply not getting the work done in the classroom; had already been to a JUCO, and that trend wasn't changing with him. Here, you've got a prep kid with his grades in order and excellent coaches on his trail. Allen chose La Tech and that offer went away. No big deal. The point is, Skip Holtz would have taken him or Allen. You can't argue with what Holtz has done at the G5 level. Ditto, Colorado State. If they've got some inkling that another QB is going to commit to them and pulled his offer as a result, it doesn't take away from the fact that they still offered him. Colorado State's Mike Bobo is a great coach, and a former QB at a top program, Georgia. The guy played and coached QBs in the SEC. If he offers a kid a scholarship before he's played a down his senior year, that says something.

  32. It doesn't matter if the offers were still valid or not. Schools offer 5 quarterbacks that they like. If they only want to sign one, they take the first verbal commitment and string along the rest. It doesn't mean they didn't want the quarterbacks. He had legit offers from good schools. And, if he still wanted those other offers, I promise they would make room for him.

  37. Yes, and Littrell coached the same as an assistant at his various stops along the way to UNT. Comparing coaches based on the success of some of their players is ridiculous. For instance, Don Coryell had players with fantastic numbers, Fouts, Muncy, Chandler, etc..., in the NFL. Did that make him a better coach than Landry or Noll? In colleges, Leach has players with crazy production. Does that make him better than Saban? I am not arguing for the sake of it but underlining the fallacies in your point.
    1 point
  38. Why don't we just get commitments from all the best players that Nick Saban is recruiting?

  39. Phillip Montgomery has 2 seasons under his belt at Tulsa, coached under a great offensive mind ayt Baylor and has a tendency to offer players after we do. Not sure how that qualifies him as having a track record of success, he is 16-10 at Tulsa, nor how he has a firmer platform to stand on as far as recruiting at THIS level. Long, on the other hand, has been a HC for much longer and has been successful in the MWC.

  40. This is where the coach will either earn or not earn his $1 million (yes, he'll get the $1 million one way or the other; whether it's well earned or not, I should say). Right now, assuming Littrell's staff were equal to Montgomery's and Long's, the only selling point I can see is distance to home. Tulsa and San Diego State are both farther. We have a nicer stadium than Tulsa. The Aztecs play at, but do not sell out Qualcomm, a pro football stadium. Hard to say Apogee is better. However, if ever sold out, I'd bet the atmosphere is better than a half empty Qualcomm. It's a tall order, of course. Currently, we shouldn't beat either school, as he said we should, unless both were as down as we are - or, we were as up as they both are. As stated, though, if we did win a recruit like Brin, that would make a statement. But, look...that's what they are paying Seth Littrell and his coaches to do. If they are not paying him to win recruiting battles against successful G5 schools, then why are they paying him at all? To outrecruit SFA and Texas State? Seriously? If so, cut his salary in half and give the money to a more competitive program within the athletic department. This is what San Diego State did this week - picked up a four star recruit who had many P5 offers: http://www.scout.com/player/209785-j-r-justice/recruiting?year=2017&s=73 Again, no one is standing still. Littrell and staff are paid to recruit better than they currently are. We've paid them more than any other coaching staff we ever have. He's got better facilities than any other coaching staff. He's got an IPF coming. We just completed a season where we went to a bowl game. This is the third class he will sign. He's been at bigger schools. He should know recruiting down doesn't lift you up in the long run. The recruiting is on the coaching staff. We've spent many years making excuses. We are now paying enough to lay the excuses aside and expect results.

  43. Yeah, this is pretty awesome. Kudos to you for keeping this flag lingering around over the years. And kudos to the AD for coming up with this idea and having the battle flag as an option in the vote. This flag should be universally synonymous with our University. I had it at our bowl vs Army...first in the corner end zone then after half in straight away endzone. I usually pack it away after tailgate, but I'm going to start toting it into Apogee with me. @drex Awesome stuff

  44. People do ignore an sos. You think 2 years after the season people realize who you played or do they just see that you won 9 games. Recruits don't look at sos, they look at results. Wins are wins. And at this point we need them against whoever we can get them against. I'm not one to complain about my $100 bill being wrinkled. Once we win games, once we are able to recruit better because we are winning, once more fans are walking thru the gate then we can book better teams.
    1 point
  45. This. Try talking an alum or a college football fan into going to this game. You'll have to do some heavy convincing unless the fan has nothing else to do on a Saturday. Again, if I'm a student or parent of a student who is paying for Apogee, I'm looking at the fact that this stadium, which was sold to the community as a way to bring in bigger and better OOC teams, has hosted UH, Indiana, Texas Southern, Idaho, Ball state, SMU, Nicholls State, Portland state, and Bethune-Cookman, with SMU, Army, Lamar, Abilene Christian, Incarnate Word and Liberty as other teams to visit here in the next five years. All of those teams were Fouts level visitors--hell, the last game at Fouts against K-State was better than ALL of these names. This remains the worst thing our AD does.
    1 point
  46. So let's see ... After leading us to a much better season than most would have thought possible - Seth doesn't know what he's doing After coming into an AD that was dysfunctional at best and trying to make changes - Wren doesn't know what he's doing Should we start a pot to see how soon Grant proves he doesn't know what he's doing? Same for Kansas State
    1 point
  47. I have nothing against Liberty. I just don't want them on our schedule. We need to be building better non-conference schedules, not signing "home and homes" with start ups. We need games with recognizable P5 programs. Syracuse still needs an OOC game in 2018 & 2021. Oklahoma State is in need of another OOC game in 2018. Come on, there had to be better options. I do not like this series with Liberty. I'd really like to hear the logic behind this.
