ODU football will soon reassign thousands of seats

NORFOLK

This spring, as Old Dominion University undertakes the painful process of reassigning most of the 14,134 seats purchased through football season tickets, a free-for-all of sorts has ensued.

As the team won 38 of its first 48 games and became the nation's winningest startup program, the demand for tickets skyrocketed. Foreman Field's 20,088 seats have been filled for all 29 home games, and the season-ticket waiting list more than doubled in the last year to 4,500.

Most on the list were told it would be years, perhaps not until the stadium is expanded, before they would get tickets. Not anymore.

Those on the waiting list probably will be able to purchase tickets for 2013 - if they contribute enough to the Old Dominion Athletic Foundation, the school's athletic fundraising arm. Members will receive priority over those who don't join the foundation, officials said.

The process could leave some who have held season tickets all four years - but who don't contribute to the foundation - without seats, officials say. Nearly 2,800 of the season tickets are held by those who don't contribute.

Monday is the deadline for fans to pay for season tickets or make down payments, and to donate to the foundation. Membership requires a minimum donation of $100. Season tickets are $163 apiece.

Buyers will select their seats based on a point system and seven criteria, including how long they've owned season tickets, how many they purchase and how much they contribute to the foundation. The more points, the earlier your appointment to pick your seats.

Supply and demand. Nice problem to have.

This. They will be expanding the stadium very soon, no doubt.

Mention a $100. minimum donation here to buy season tickets and you'll have a full blown riot.  The number of "walk up" fans or those that search for free tickets must be tops in college football.

GO MEAN GREEN

The amount of free tickets available also must be tops in college ball.

Here's the correct article that was printed in today's Pilot

http://pilotonline.com/sports/college/old-dominion/odu-will-reallocate-every-season-ticket-at-foreman-field-and/article_11b1e62d-6c66-54f7-9261-cfbf7277597a.html

They did a similar process in 2013. One problem they have is that there is little room to actually expand the stadium. The campus is filled to capacity now and in a very old and established neighborhood.

This stood out to me. Now this a OOC home schedule. Regional P5's coming to a 20,000 seat stadium.

"ODU officials say they expect the demand for football season tickets to increase this spring because big-name schools are coming to Norfolk the next four seasons. North Carolina is on the home schedule in 2017, Virginia Tech in 2018, East Carolina in 2019 and Virginia and Wake Forest in 2020."

This article is more than a few years old.

Happening today.  Happens about every three years for basketball seats at ODU and about every four years for football.  Article I read was in today's Norfolk paper talking about NOW.  They even announced it at the UNT-ODU women's BB game I attended with the family here in Norfolk last night.  So...don't know about the "old news", but it is happening now at ODU.

@KRAM1 what's Norfolk like? How about your game-day experience?

Norfolk and the surrounding area is quite diverse and interesting.  ODU sits just on the edge of downtown Norfolk.  The arena....called the Ted....is nice.  Does not seat as many as the Super Pit, but does have what appears to be suites and Club type seating.

Norfolk/Portsmouth seems to be in need of a good bit of "renewal".  It sits right on the Chesapeake and is home to a large Naval Base and Naval hospital, and large ship repair facilities operated by General Dynamics.  Our son and daughter-in-law live in the Norfolk suburb of Chesapeake...better schools, etc. But, in traffic can be an hour from their work site in Portsmouth. Norfolk definitely enjoys all four seasons.  And, winters can be both wet and cold, but fall colors are beautiful.  Lots if good seafood in and around the area.  And, Virginia Beach is not far away for shopping as shopping is not all that great in Norfolk.

As far as game day...nothing special in regard to the women's game we attended.  Parking was, however, free and located just across the street from the arena in a multi-story garage.  ODU fans were friendly enough and a couple even thanked us for coming.

Since son and daughter-in-law are both Navy M.D.'s with specialities there are only two Naval hospitals large enough for them...San Diego or Portsmouth/Norfolk.  They were stationed in San Diego before Norfolk.  San Diego is nicer for sure, but also more expensive.  The home they live in here...would be selling for well over $1,000,000 in San Diego and over $2,000,000 on Coronado Island.  About 1/3 the cost here for housing, so, yep, less costly in Virginia.
