  1. I just wanted to express my personal gratitude to you guys on this board and the UNT community as a whole for your graciousness and absolute class during this time. People in Southeast Texas have experienced unimaginable loss this past week and its effects will be felt for a long, long time in our community. You can not imagine the heart break, listening to the local news at 3:00 in the morning and have someone call in begging for someone to come rescue them and save their life. Then you get on social media only to see good friends posting addresses of family members that are in need of rescue. As daylight breaks, the local news rides along with the guy you sit behind at the local high school football games as he is rescuing people in a nursing home. You turn it over to national news to see a fraternity brother, the commissioner of your fantasy football league, the guy you joked saying you didn't want him to be in charge of saving your life when he became a firefighter. But there he is, holding an elderly lady he just pulled from a house. Then you look out your front door and realize you can do nothing. You are trapped in your neighborhood. I live very close to the airport which has turned into a makeshift military base and the location all of those rescued were brought to. It is Sunday and helicopters are still flying over. Our players are dealing with issues that no one really has a good example of how to handle. By my count, roughy 60% of the players listed on our roster are from an area effected by the storm as well as a few coaches who are natives of those areas. I feel like having this game played was the right thing to do, not because of the money that our little program relies on, but because our players needed it. Those few hours were important to the psyche of our guys. Those few hours let our guys focus on something other than devastation or lack of running water. Those few hours let our guys play the game they love. I truly wished I would have been able to make this game. Obviously as a Lamar fanatic I was ready to see the season start. I was ready to put this storm behind me. I was ready to not hear the rescue helicopters passing over my house every 10 minutes. But I also wanted to meet these people who understood the bigger picture of this. I wanted to shake the hand of each one of those individuals and thank them for their generosity. Who directly contacts the Athletic Director of an FBS program to offer fundraising ideas to help an opponent? Someone who gets it and someone I want to personally meet. Thank you all again. You can bet your ass if Lamar and North Texas ever meet again I will be in Apogee Stadium and I will find you guys.

  2. Let's forgo the usual debate about shorts for a minute and give the Mean Green Brigade props for playing Lamar's alma mater. That was a class move.

  3. I understand it was against a FCS opponent, but the Mean Green did what a solid/bowl contending FBS should have done and dominated against Lamar. Things that stuck out to me from the game( Probably just a homers overreactions) . 1) True Sophomore Mason Fine is 100% healthy and much improved. He was poised in the pocket and went through his progressions like a seasoned veteran. He also showed his leadership and toughness in game one. One play that stuck out to me. Was on a deep pass to Guyton , Fine got hit on a borderline late hit by a Lamar Defensive end. Fine jumped right back up and limped into the huddle and never missed a beat. The Lamar DE had to be helped of the field.. 2) The offensive line still has work to do but could easily be the most improved group of all. Coach Womack and the UNT nutritionist have absolutely worked miracles this off season for the whole team but most noticeable in the Offensive line. And the fact that they didn't start one senior on the O-line says for it self they should only improve in this season and the next. 3) The receiving core could be the best ad deepest the Mean Green has seen in a very long time. With Jalen Guyton and former Walk on Michael (The Standard) Lawrence leading the way. Not to mention Rico Bussey should be back for SMWHO. Quientin Jackson the JR from Illinois could have a break out year as well. And you also have Jaelon Darden, Greg White, Caleb Chumley and Kelvin Smith as pass catching options as well. 4) The freshman running back behind Jeffrey Wilson are the real deal!! Nick Smith from Arlington Martin showed flashes of why he was Martin High School all time leading scorers. And Evan Johnson made some key tackles on special teams to go along with 98 yards himself, which is pretty good for a true freshman in his first college game. 5) I didn't really realize how young this team was until the game started. 18 of the 22 Starters were underclassman. With 7 of those 18 being sophomores. 6) Most importantly 1-0.

  4. I am not sure a game like this tells you anything about the team.

  5. I feel like I just watched my alma mater's traditionally mediocre football team beat another school by 45 points. I feel pretty good

  6. We have to be MORE PHYSICAL upfront. I am critical of the Offensive line, of course, but we look passive. Overall it's hard to tell vs a lesser opponent. Biggest thing is we can't do anything to kill ourselves.

  7. TJ Just Raw Strength in this one. This defense attacked the ball in carriers hands A LOT. Reminds me of 2013 Jeff just doing Jeff Things: Mike Law Ladies and Gentleman: I might find time to do more later... Off to work

  8. I have been a Green fan for some time now and there always seems to be an excuse for our crowd totals. We have to show up from week to week like the bigger programs do. If it isn't the weather, its the game being on a holiday weekend. It's one thing or another. Good programs teams show up week after week no matter what. I know it takes time to build a program. I guess I am just tired of the excuses. I hope some change finally comes. Go get em Green!

  10. Wow. Emotional post alert. This was maybe the most awesome post ever on the Gomeangreen.com board, and I've been on it a long time. Thank you and your University for your class and commitment. It was nice to see fans having respect for each other. It was great seeing fans celebrate their teams and loved ones on a September evening in Apogee. This was more than just 1-0. This game was needed for a lot of reasons way beyond money and scoreboard. It was needed for a sense of relief and support. Seeing the Green Brigade play the Lamar song at the end of the game and the sign reading Texas Strong brought tears and emotions to the surface. All I kept hearing in my head was "Texans supporting Texans," that now infamous slogan ringing in my head. I met some Lamar family members after the game and they were so incredibly kind. They had no idea what they were going back to and when, but there they were smiling and connecting with other humans on a beautiful Denton night. Though this might not be a popular idea, I wouldn't even mind giving Lamar a home game one day. It doesn't have to be next year or in 5 years. But we will always be connected because of that First Saturday in September 2017. All the best the rest of the way. God bless on the healing and rebuild. Gone on the schedule, but not in our hearts - EVER. Go Lamar GMG

  12. I know the fisherman is not supposed to have compassion for the bait, but I got no joy from whipping their behinds. My thoughts all week have been sympathetic to their plight because I've been through a major hurricane myself many years ago. Otherwise, I think I would have been more energized and excited to see Lamar. I agree that I didn't hear much conversation specifically about Lamar while tailgating.

  13. Special teams was not good tonight. The punt return team was shaking and not just the idiotic drop that should have never been touched. The blockers had little situation awareness as to where all those terrible punts were. Our longsnapper needs to get that ball down in a big way. Too many dropped balls by receivers. The D better expect long balls next week after getting smoked tonight on a few.

  14. After week 1 the ESPN FPI has been updated and here is what it looks like now: UNT at SMU: SMU favored 74.9-25.1 UNT at Iowa: Iowa favored 89.6-10.4 UNT vs UAB: UNT favored 77.6-22.4 UNT at USM: USM favored 59.9-40.1 UNT vs UTSA: UNT favored 62.5-37.5 UNT at FAU: UNT favored 51.0-49.0 UNT vs ODU: UNT favored 64.9-35.1 UNT at LA Tech: LA Tech favored: 63.9-36.1 UNT vs UTEP: UNT favored 81.4-18.6 UNT vs Army: Army favored: 74.1-25.9 UNT at Rice: UNT favored 69.2-30.8 So that means if we win the games we're favored in that would put us at 7-5 on the season.

  16. 1. We are deep, deep, deep at WR. 2. Darden has that "it" factor. His speed and ability were evident on his one KR. Will be special. 3. Chumley is a beast. 4. Little worried about the D. 5. Thankful to have QB depth. 6. Punting game is scary. 7. Room to improve, not nothing they can't correct. 8. Fine looked much better. The throw to Lawrence was beautiful. 9. Sticking to my prediction of 8-4. 10. CUSA not overly impressive

  17. Evan Johnson for me, little guy but he absolutely trucked a couple of guys. He runs like he's angry.

  19. 24-7 is the score... Wilson has 2 TDs Wilson on pace for over 4,000 yards this season

  20. We are deep. Wilson was Wilson and looked faster than in the past. First impressions of Smith and Johnson is that they run with much more power than their stature would indicate. I know this was Lamar, but man we are deep and fun to watch.

  21. this...I could not agree more. ✔️ C-USA needs schools that believe in science & reason. not a fan of either school...too bad one of them had to win.

  23. Not really looking past us. They even mention in this thread that the game against UNT could be tough as well. Just a thread brought up because of last night's Arky State performance against Nebraska.

  24. They played it again at the end of the game with players from both teams facing the stands in attention. I noticed there also was a Lamar flag flying on one of the south end zone poles under the North Texas flag. I spoke with Wren Friday night while setting up my camp/tailgate site. He said we gave Lamar a place to practice Friday (I think in Apogee) and a free meal in the Victory cafeteria, as well as heavily discounted additional meals. He said that Lamar was likely going to have to stay in Denton a few extra nights after the game and and that UNT was doing things to help out.

  25. No: I wouldn't want an invite to C-USA for Baylor either right now. Edit: But for Liberty in particular: I don't think UNT -a public tier one university thanks to its scientific prowess- should be associated with a institution like Liberty. The scientist in me would have a hard time with associating with a place that believes that they are an institution of higher learning but has scarily many people who think evolution did not happen which shows a profound lack of scientific understanding to the point that one has to call it denial. And that is not even to talk about them having the moral failure of hiring all the dirty Baylor administrators.

  26. 1. Mason didn't pick up a 0 blitz they brought more than we had blockers it was man to man coverage with no safety help. They need to do one of two things there, throw slants or fades. He has no time to hold the ball in those types of blitzes. Special teams will get cleaned up this week. The onside wasn't close, they got it 5 yards before they could even touch it. Jenkins was returning punts live first time in a long time. I believe he'll get that fixed. The sky isn't falling from what I saw, just some technique stuff that needs to be addressed.

  27. In all fairness to Mason, the one sack he did take wasn't his fault. That was a hard blitz and he had less than 2 seconds to do anything. O-Line couldn't handle that hard of a blitz and as a result Mason was put on his back before he even realized what was going on.

  28. I was telling my girlfriend's dad that I don't remember if I've seen our backup QB come in when it wasn't replacing a starter in my time as a UNT fan.

  29. I feel that the offense did what it was supposed to do. Wish the ball would have been thrown more, but my guess is they didn't because they didn't want to give too much of the playbook away to SMU/Run up the score on Lamar. Running game looks really solid with Nic Smith backing up Jeffrey Wilson. The defense also looked good to me. 1 INT isn't as many as I would have liked, but they're playing man now so there's a bit of a transition period I guess. D-Line looked meh to me, will be happy to get English back. Special teams was scary. Eric Jenkins muffing that punt made me a little mad honestly, but it's his first time back there so I understand. Punting was surprisingly good imo. Had a few injury scares at the beginning but seems like everyone is okay now so that seems good to me. After game 1 I still think this is an 8-5 team.

  31. There is nothing respectable about being a 2 TD dog. It's disrespectful and fans, coaches, and players should see it as such.

  32. I saw a CSC blue shirt trying to get a kid to show her his ticket on the alumni side as he was crossing through the walkway. He was refusing and saying he was trying to go visit his brother. I don't really have a problem with this. Tim Crouch is a staple sound of the UNT game day experience, but honestly I'm ready for a change there. Last night there were multiple mistaken calls (announcing clear incompletions as completions) and issues pronouncing player names. It's not like he doesn't have an opportunity to get pronunciation clarifications prior to the game. It doesn't seem like he does his homework and has problems seeing the game. There were multiple times you could hear his spotter talking to him through the PA.

  33. I agree with Ben, let them look past us. Lets beat them, so that they have a reason to stop being ignorant. Plus I'm sick of losing to these guys. This game is super important to us fans.

  34. There is an Alumni Association Pep Rally at Four Corners Brewery in Dallas FRIDAY evening before the game. Alumni Association also has a tailgate event on the lawn at SMU prior to the game. Come to both...will be fun. Contact the Alumni Association if you do not have the details.

  35. I was sort of checking in on the score. They got a pick 6 and recovered a fumble in the end zone.....didn't have the dominate numbers like we did. SFA and Lamar are both in the same conference I believe. Not sure the difference in the 2 teams. I think we'll be maybe a TD underdog? If we don't turn the ball over it should be a good game.

  36. The running back depth is impressive. WR too, especially once another sophomore Rico Bussey is back in lineup. Good news is that most of those guys have 2-3 years of eligibility remaining.

  37. Excellent crowd in the Club level I thought. Better than last year. More came out to their seats, but still...way too many stay inside for good portions or all of the game. Their choice, of course, but sure wish they would come outside and make some noise. Saw lots of "new" folks trying out their seats. Their were at least 8 newbies in my section alone that I noticed. Thought crowd was OK for Lamar, but work to do. That "work" starts at SMU next Saturday!

  38. Yeah, we can't give them legitimacy by playing them.....Baylor just gave that to them for us.

  40. There are always excuses at North Texas. Crowd was decent I thought...but it took a while for the main crowd to get to their seats. Yep, we commented to each other about people leaving at the half and the flood gates opened beginning of 4th. Made it easy for me to head back to the house...no traffic for me...red lot. WB and the gang gotta along way to go.......win!

  41. You know what feels awesome? Not just the blowout, but seeing a good QB come in, in a mop-up capacity after seeing the starter have a great game. I know it's FCS Lamar, but we're doing exactly what we should to them.

  42. Anyone else feel like there was a bit of a halo infraction there? What ever happened to the two yard rule?

  43. As a student (and music major), it's hard to get hype with the band. The band should be in the wing zone so acoustics are better and can be enjoyed by all. I'm also from where Penn State is and another thing that would always hype the student section up is better audio selections on third down and such.
