  1. I just wanted to express my personal gratitude to you guys on this board and the UNT community as a whole for your graciousness and absolute class during this time. People in Southeast Texas have experienced unimaginable loss this past week and its effects will be felt for a long, long time in our community. You can not imagine the heart break, listening to the local news at 3:00 in the morning and have someone call in begging for someone to come rescue them and save their life. Then you get on social media only to see good friends posting addresses of family members that are in need of rescue. As daylight breaks, the local news rides along with the guy you sit behind at the local high school football games as he is rescuing people in a nursing home. You turn it over to national news to see a fraternity brother, the commissioner of your fantasy football league, the guy you joked saying you didn't want him to be in charge of saving your life when he became a firefighter. But there he is, holding an elderly lady he just pulled from a house. Then you look out your front door and realize you can do nothing. You are trapped in your neighborhood. I live very close to the airport which has turned into a makeshift military base and the location all of those rescued were brought to. It is Sunday and helicopters are still flying over. Our players are dealing with issues that no one really has a good example of how to handle. By my count, roughy 60% of the players listed on our roster are from an area effected by the storm as well as a few coaches who are natives of those areas. I feel like having this game played was the right thing to do, not because of the money that our little program relies on, but because our players needed it. Those few hours were important to the psyche of our guys. Those few hours let our guys focus on something other than devastation or lack of running water. Those few hours let our guys play the game they love. I truly wished I would have been able to make this game. Obviously as a Lamar fanatic I was ready to see the season start. I was ready to put this storm behind me. I was ready to not hear the rescue helicopters passing over my house every 10 minutes. But I also wanted to meet these people who understood the bigger picture of this. I wanted to shake the hand of each one of those individuals and thank them for their generosity. Who directly contacts the Athletic Director of an FBS program to offer fundraising ideas to help an opponent? Someone who gets it and someone I want to personally meet. Thank you all again. You can bet your ass if Lamar and North Texas ever meet again I will be in Apogee Stadium and I will find you guys.
  2. Rivals seems to have their entire site go down every NSD...I believe it is just expected by now over there. So many people have "cut the cord" recently that I'm sure it's just overloaded with streamers
  3. I'm guessing it's an ESPN issue cause a quick Twitter search bring up a lot of complaints happening right now with this issue
  4. Either way they have to go to Louisana just to get out of Beaumont. That is the only way out that is open at the moment. UL-L offered their facilities to us earlier this week and one of our co-DCs was on staff there the last couple of seasons. Guessing that was the connection there. Yesterday I-10 east coming into Texas was closed and people were being detoured in Lafayette up to Shreveport then over to Texas. Add to this, the Sabine River (river that decided Texas and Louisiana) is about to flood and will probably shutdown I-10 both ways. They have already called for a mandatory evacuation for the areas along the river in Orange which is just outside Beaumont. If the team didn't leave today they might not have been able to leave at all. My guess is they will practice tomorrow in Lafayette then head to Denton. They might even try to get some work in tonight when they get there so there isn't as much rust...honestly you'd rather just have a walk-through the day before a game and not a full fledged practice.
  5. Very thoughtful gesture. At the moment I've volunteered my time to some friends. While I was spared water damage many close friends weren't. I'll be pulling carpet for the next few days. On top of that, lightening hit our outside A/C unit so I'm about to shell out a few grand on that. Insurance should reimburse some but it still sucks.
  6. Thanks for your kind thoughts. Unfortunately it's not looking like I'll have a chance to make it up there. Believe me I could go for some cold beer, tailgate food and some college football right about now. There was an outside chance before Harvey but I would have been going with a friend from Houston but he'll have other priorities now. As for my house, I was spared last night. Rain slacked off at about 2:00 this morning but had it continued for another hour so so at the rate it was at I would have had no chance. Port Arthur which is about 10 minutes from me in the opposite direction of Lamar got absolutely hammered last night. People being rescued from rooftops and such. They were evacuating people to the Port Arthur Civic Center until it started to take on water. I'm very familiar with Coach Langston. His son is actually still a part of the Lamar team as a Long Snapper. There was considerable improvement in our OL play when he moved from DFO to OL coach. His first year as OC in 2015 saw Lamar have a RB run for 2,000+ yards and crossed the 2,000 mark in only 10 games...one of only 7 players in D-1 history to do that. The OL also only gave up 5 sacks that season too. 2016 was an absolute nightmare as that RB went down with a season ending foot injury in game 5 then saw 4 QBs go down with season ending injuries in the next 3 weeks. We ended up burning 2 red shirts at the QB position and finished the season with 1 healthy QB and a WR as the back-up QB.
  7. This was actually in the Houston area that this happened. Beaumont is still in bad shape though. See my post on the thread about potential game cancelation for details.
  8. Lamar fan here. Before I get too far I just want to explain the position Lamar is in right now in terms of flooding. I live approx 10 minutes from the Lamar campus in Nederland. I actually live closer to campus than many people actually in Beaumont. At the moment, my street is about 18" under water and it is slowly making its way towards my front door...and we are steadily getting more rain. We aren't seeing the catastrophic flooding that Houston is getting but don't mistake this as not being a serious issue. Houston's problem is that its drainage system has been sacrificed for expansion of housing. 50-60 years ago when the drainage was designed, it was adequate for the population at that time. But as the city boomed, the drainage system wasn't upgraded and it's times like this that you see the effect of that. To put a numbers effect on things, earlier today the weather channel reported that Houston Hobby Airport had seen 27" and Houston Bush International Airport had seen 29" of rain in the last 36 hours...each with 3"-5" to come. At that same time Beaumont had received 25" with another potential 8"-12" to come. Now to the game. This is the only "money game" Lamar has on the schedule this season. We need this game to make the program stay afloat. Yes we have the same bye week but if we postpone it we are in the same boat in terms of not having a bye week all season. I also wouldn't read too much into the coaches comments. From the press conferences and interviews he's had since he took over in December, he hasn't made himself look very comfortable behind a mic. Another thing to consider is that Lamar recruits the Houston and southeast texas areas heavily...several of the players are dealing with issues that go well beyond the field...yes they are physically not there but don't underestimate the toll that it takes mentally. As a fan I hope this game goes as scheduled and we can begin to move beyond this disaster.
