I Think This Is New

Thanks for the link! I'm curious about the count. See the quote:

"Dodge also confirmed that UNT has a full allotment of 25 scholarships to give in its recruiting class, leaving the Mean Green just one scholarship to give after the addition of defensive end Alonzo Horton, a junior college defensive end from Northwest Mississippi C.C."

I didn't think Rivals was showing 23 or now 24 committs now with Horton. Where are the other scholarships going?

Yes it's new .. I'm glad to see that Dodge actually talked w/ Vito. I hope Dodge starts to talk with him more so Brett can update us more on the blog.

DeLoach really needs to be our secondary coach .... who's out there they we could get as a LB coach ??

I'm still concerned about not enough BEEF. Only 5 players listed 250 lbs and over; plus we are losing Peachy.

I really hope Deloach coaches the secondary but that is based on the fact the he was the secondary coach at UCLA (therefore I assume he is good at it). How was the secondary at UCLA during his tenure? I have only been following the program heavily since the 2005 season so I am not as familiar with DeLoach as some of you, before he came DC what position coach was he? What position did he coach while being DC?

I took a fresh look at Texas and Sun Belt recruiting on Rivals to see how we stack up so far. Here's the result:

We're dominating the Belt in recruiting and coming in about fifth out of the 10 D1 schools in Texas. We have a slight edge over TCU so far this recruiting season. If we picked off a single 4-star from somewhere (which we might be able to do next year), we'd be essentially tied with Baylor.

This comes with a disappointing 2007 season. A respectable 2008 would make recruiting even better.

I'm feeling pretty good about these numbers.

Texas:

UT: 20 overall. 12 4-stars, 7 3's, 1 2-star.

Baylor: 15 overall. 1 4-star, 7 3's, 7 2's.

A&M: 25 overall. 9 4-stars, 15 3's, 1 2-star.

Tech: 14 overall. 3 4-stars, 9 3's, 2 2's.

Houston: 19 overall. 4 3-stars, 15 2's.

Rice: 13 overall. All are 2-stars.

SMU: 4 overall. All are 2-stars.

UTEP: 19 overall. 2 3-stars, 16 2's, 1 zero (Rivals goes from 2-stars straight to zero)

TCU: 12 overall. 6 3-stars, 6 2's.

UNT: 24 overall. 7 3-stars, 17 2's.

Belt:

Ark State: 6 overall. 5 2-stars, 1 zero.

FAU: 13 overall. 8 2-stars, 5 0's.

FIU: 8 overall. 2 3-stars, 5 2's, 1 zero.

ULM: 17 overall. 2 3-stars, 14 2's, 1 zero.

ULL: 15 overall. 1 3-star, 9 2-stars, 5 0's.

MT: 12 overall. 1 3-star, 11 2's.

Troy: 16 overall. 4 3-stars, 10 2's, 2 0's.

UNT: 24 overall. 7 3-stars, 17 2's.

If I'm correct, you can sign only 25, but can award as many as you want in a given year based on:

1. graduation/incoming

2. former walk-ons

3. transfers like Fentriss who waited a year on their own $

4. guys like Peachey leaving the program with remaining eligibility

Several more over the 25 signed will go on scholarship. Magic number in August is 85 (or is it 82?)

I think there's some beef that has been marinating for a while in the smokehouse. Issac Thomas, Joe Miller, Draylen Ross, Jesse DeSoto, and Jordan Scoggins all return next year, and should be pretty big. There are a few big bodies we are bringing in this year, but, in my own opinion, I think the bigger need has been addressed: speed.

Remember those bubble screens that OU kept taking to the house? Remember never being able to get to the edge on those Navy option plays? And who can forget the countless bombs we got scored on last year becuase we were a step too slow? If you have some speed, your defense is instantly better.

Not disagreeing that speed will help TREMENDOUSLY but don't you think scheming to stop these things might have helped? You know, maybe put our all-conference safety or someone/anyone in charge of spying the pitch man against Navy...but I digress, the boogie man has left. This is why Deloach has me more excited than even the recruiting class...which I think is stellar, all things considered.

Also, you getting used to married life yet? Have you figured out yet that half of what you used to do is now "wrong" or is the honeymoon still in effect?

If we only have one scholly left to give...I would hope that it would go to an O lineman (since we're losing Peachey).

Also, Fentriss and Garden have been on scholarship....ever since they transferred. I'm pretty sure neither of them would count toward this year's recruiting numbers.

So, I think we still have one scholly left to dole out.

And then there are invited walk-ons and non invitied walk-ons and gray shirts. Not to mention kids that decide not to come back during the summer/spring. "Recruiting is like a box of chocolates."

If Fentriss performs as expected, he and Fitzgerald will be awesome to behold. And if the opponents' defense takes them away, the rest of our WRs (Dibrell, etc.) will eat their lunch. I feel a helluva offensive explosion coming on. I know I have unintentionally slighted others by not naming them...sorry. We have a super receiving corps!
