I don't think money was the issue....A&M coulda matched 2.3M with their coffers. I just think the temptation of the Blue Grass was too much. I think except for Sutton, every Coach at Kentucky the last 70 years has won a National Title.

(In a nerdy voice) I am down with the boys in the hood. B)

He looks like he is giving some sort of gang hand symbols.

Or using a porn symbol. Use your imagination. Has to do with a woman's anatomy.

I have such a dirty mind. :o

actually, A&M said the 1.75 was as much as they were willing to offer. If he wanted more, he'd have to go elsewhere.

I think its kinda sorry for A&M fans the way it went down. College coaches are the biggest whores in sports, but then again coaches arent ever assured a job either these days so its a catch 22. I guess you do what's best for your family.

He'll just be another good coach to work at Kentucky, will likely win a title, but its all been done before there. He could have been a LEGEND at A&M, much like DKR at Texas. They would have named bulidings after him, etc.

The above was exactly what I was thinking, not to mention the fact that if Kentucky goes a couple of seasons with less than 30 wins, many of their fans will be wanting to replace him.

I have read that at Texas A&M and UT the courtside seats go to the big donors. The big donors are usually football fans, and don't show up for basketball games, or at best, only attend rivalry games or Big 12 games. Both Gillespie and Barnes have said they would like to have noisy students, instead of empty seats surrounding the court.

Gillespie was quoted as saying the fans should all be there to support the team no matter who the opponent was. Since then, A&M has played a significantly stronger OOC schedule. Perhaps The A.D. interfered with the scheduling. Maybe he was disappointed he was unable to get more students closer to the court. Maybe he wanted to be at a place, like Kentucky where everyone is as committed to sucess as he is. Or, maybe the big raise was a factor.

Here was A&M's schedule for BG's first season:

Trinity (Div III, no athletic scholarships)

H Texas-Permian Basin (Div II)

H La Monroe

H Chicago St

H North Carolina A&T

H Prairie View A&M

H Alabama A&M

H Grambling St

H Houston

@ Penn St

BG asked for that schedule in year one to build confidence and teach the kids to win. I couldn't find a link, but there are a few members where he talks about how it helped shape his team. They opened strong in OOC, then played Kansas tough on the road that year and blew out Texas in the first half of the conference season, then knew how to take care of the weaker teams.
