  1. Layne's grandmother is bravely battling cancer and his decision was based on staying closer to her and the rest of the family as they support her during this difficult time. UNT did the right thing for this young man by letting him out of his signed NLI.

  3. Just seems like he wanted to stay close to home. I doubt theres a need to overthink it.

  4. It’s INSANE!!! So we are encouraged to contribute to a NIL fund to pay players who have absolutely no loyalty to our school and then if we want to watch them play we must buy a ticket, pay for parking etc.? Count me out.

  5. Fanbase? What fanbase? Even the hardcore followers on gmg are walking away. Very little interest or traffic anymore. Covid, the portal, NIL and the economy have all taken a hit on what little fan base we had. Ignoring, or excluding your most ardent supporters during Spring Practice was a pretty shallow decision as well. I guess when we start the season 6-0 the fans will magically start to show up at Datcu.

  7. I saw enough of him to strongly believe he would have helped this team from day 1 https://www.cbssports.com/watch/college-basketball/video/pro-16-recap-layne-taylor-college-basketball-recruiting-weekly

  8. Maybe my anticipations were too high for him and I thought he would be a major contributor early. If he wasn’t coming here I’d just assume he had something we would perceive as a step up. But maybe this was a more mutual parting?? Otherwise I am a bit perplexed.

  11. I guess he wasn't lying when he said he wanted out of his NLI to be somewhere closer to home. Not sure what his home situation is like (maybe he has family that needs help?), but UCA is much closer to it.

  12. Nice win by the gals. Some great pitching by MackWags.....to save the day. And some huge hits. Tatum Sparks was the offensive star....but some other big hits, as well. Nice to see Kat with that double. I think some of our bats are coming around.....Lexi has been hitting well for a while now. The drone show was superb. And that's the first night game I had been to.....love the little light show that happens....when we win. GMG!

  13. Mean Green snap a four-game losing streak to beat FAU in Game 1, 4-2. Wagoner came in and completely dominated. Tatum Sparks hit a go-ahead homer to dead center in the bottom of the 4th and we scored an insurance run in the 6th on a throwing error trying to catch a runner stealing 2nd scored the runner from 3rd.

  14. I don’t think it matters at this point. This is a full rebuild and none of the remaining parts are key pieces of a championship team.

  15. This defection is just another effect of the NIL era. Hodge is likely to go very heavy on established low-major transfers who have been productive. Or formerly productive high-major transfers who fell out of favor at their previous program. Why would Layne Taylor come to UNT to sit on the bench? Is it to develop and earn a spot 2-3 years down the road? No, because 2-3 years down the road Hodge is still going to be filling up his roster with those same transfers who have already been productive at some level of college basketball. The move for Layne Taylor is to go somewhere he can PLAY now and be productive. Worst-case he could land at a school like North Texas later as a transfer. Best-case he can springboard straight to a high major and make big $$$.

  16. I thought he’d be contributing major minutes on Day 1. Not sure about starting, but def not on the bench

  22. I think that’s too simple a view. If money is being made, then the players deserve a part in that. I have no issue with that. What I have issue with is that because there is so much money to be made now, too many bad apples have spoiled it due to inaction or inability of the collective to come together to create rules to keep the games fair. Now we have a system where everyone (players, coaches, administrations) is in it for themselves because that has become the game. It’s no longer about staying together and building a team. It’s about making as much money as you possibly can while you can. There is no sport in that.

  25. Good job killing the fun with inaction, Presidents, ADs, everyone involved. Once sport becomes only about the money, it’s jumped the shark and time to reboot.

  29. Short outing for Childers in Game 1. Four walks in 1+ innings of work. Tied at 1 after FAU scored on a wild pitch and we scored on a sac fly in foul territory by Mikayla.

  31. Tough opponent? We should have beat them last year. Personally, I hate posts that are state our opponent is tough. That should be worried about playing us.

  32. We seem to occupy a very unique and miserable position in the current NIL landscape. 1. Our players are very good. 2. Our collective doesn’t have much $ to pay them. 3. Other schools have collectives that are willing to pay them a lot more. It is really pretty simple. The only way for us to compete right now is to identify and acquire undervalued assets. And then when the marketplace puts greater value on those assets, we have to start over and do it again. Unless any of you guys have a few million $$$ you want to send to Harry via bank draft… I am certainly frustrated and disappointed with the current situation, but I have invested too much and care too deeply to bail on UNT basketball now. It is just going to make it all the sweeter when we finally prevail.

  33. Yeah, sadly, I fear that the answer is pretty simple: we have the worst NIL in the conference. Until that changes, we'll be sending Hodge into a gunfight with a knife. The further we get into the NIL era, the harder it's going to be to keep up the momentum from past success. At this point we're basically just hoping and praying that Hodge is a WAY better coach/recruiter/evaluater than his AAC counterparts. Even if he is really good at those things, we can't just expect him to pull off miracles every single season.

  34. First year in 20+ that I'm hesitant to pull the trigger on renewing my 4 season football tickets. Tired of never "winning the big game", tired of "it's about me", and "show me the money". Very little or no loyalty to "the team or school". Maybe I'm too old to be a college football/basketball fan.....

  35. Bob here has a point... Fund our players, fund our program, buy tickets, pay for parking, overpay on concessions and merchandise.... all while the product inevitably withers away due to all of the rules currently in place. We're getting had coming and going. While the ignorant and rabid fan bases of the big boys can scalp their dumbass alum/fans, I don't think ours will play this game. And if our fans do, for how long? What is the ROI? And I think the pill would be easier to take if we knew the athletic department personnel were truly committed to the university. But we have a long and ugly history of athletic department personnel being committed to athletic department personnel. Outside of Patrick Cobbs, players or coaches or administrators, who really gives a shit about the University of North Texas? I think it's time, more than ever, to start hiring North Texas people. In this new age of collegiate athletics, passion and meaningful work will have to carry the torch. There is no better way to infuse the athletic department with passion than hiring North Texas people.

  40. The problem with this, if Hodge is that good at recruiting over and over, in 2-2 years, he will be swooned away by $$$$ at a larger school.

  41. Does not necessarily mean we pulled it, he may have asked. We don't have to release him from his NLI National Letter of Intent, but can choose to do so.

  43. That is one way to look at it. Another would be that given a full offseason together and the addition of a couple of key pieces, this year’s team could have built the foundation for something better. I wasn’t convinced this team was special or even a top conference team but I have a hard time imagining losing the entire top six on the roster is ever really a positive unless you are just awful. We were not great but far from awful.
