  2. I went to New Orleans and had an awesome time! I definitely would not have gone to the NM Bowl, and quite sure several others would not have either. I'm glad we went to NO. I would have preferred Shreveport, but that's where I was born. So, glad I got to take my wife to NOLA. Wish we would have had a better result, but what a fun trip.

  3. I cannot stand the players who sit out Bowl games to "not risk" themselves for the upcoming draft. CBS just interviewed the Defensive star for NC State - not about the team (still loves them) but "looking out for himself" I know others might disagree but this is not one of the good things.

  5. A Benford-coached team does not pull out a close victory like this on the road in conference play.

  6. A one-point win...on the road...at altitude...I'll take it every time! Now on to low-altitude San Antonio and get ready to give nUTSAck the "TreeFiddy treatment"!

  7. Great way to start conference play! They said on the broadcast we hadn’t won in El Paso since 1951. Had lost 9 in a row going into this one. GMG!

  8. Good first conference win. Might be a down year for UTEP, but I'll take it.

  9. I am completely amazed at how much a difference coaching can make. On paper, this team does not seem as talented as those during the Benford years. Yet, all they do is compete and win. Thank you Coach McCasland.

  15. My wife and I literally got tickets, made team hotel reservations, rented a car to drive down, bought plane tickets to fly back, got two nights of overnight care for our kids, and I got out of work 2 days before the game. I agree. no excuses. it was a super fun trip!

  16. My hope is that FAU's Singletary declares for the NFL Draft this coming year and we won't have to face him in 2018. April?

  18. We nearly lost that at the buzzer. I really don't know how it all went before this so I'll have to read the recaps. However, any win in El Paso is good as far as I am concerned.

  21. Outside of the Armed Forces Bowl the New Orleans Bowl is and always will be our best bowl option until we bust into the top 10-15. We just need to win it next year...or whenever we go back. Make plans now. Rick

  22. I'm listening to Jimbo Fisher talk about how he doesn't like the timing of the early signing period. Over and over I hear P5 coaches talk about how they don't like it. However, I have yet to hear a G5 coach say they don't like it. Every time I hear a P5 coach complain, it just makes me like it more and more.

  23. I can't blame them. College football makes so much money and the players want a big pay day. The coaches have zero loyalty so you can't expect the player to risk their future while everyone around them gets rich. Most of these bowl games are meaningless anyway. Look no further than Jaylon Smith. He got lucky the Cowboys took a chance on him in the second round. It still cost him huge money.

  24. We were 8-22 last year. We’re now 8-6. That seems like a pretty nice improvement so far.

  25. Not really true. We won 4 of the 9 games where we were underdogs (i.e. against supposed better competition). We beat 4 bowl teams (USM, UAB, Latech, Army). It sucks that we lost the last two games, but it doesn't mean that it wasn't a good season. Most people had us winning 6 games. We overachieved a little. We need to take another step next year.

  26. So much fear. We played a good team, and had a terrible 3rd quarter, ended up losing. I do not judge my self worth on the outcome of the game. We will lose some games when we play good competition. Sitting in the shadows and waiting to shout I told you so every time we don't win? #olddenton hahahahahahahaha

  27. @UNT90 I normally disagree with you but I’m on the same page regarding the bowl game. Would rather lose 50-30 to a FSU squad people care about. Yes Troy is better than FSU, but literally nobody that isn’t a die hard cares.

  29. Some talent was lost on defense, but there seems to be some good young talent coming in. I'm okay with a young, talented defense. They're going to make mistakes, but they're also going to have to be coached up...I believe in the staff Littrell has put in place. I'm excited! GMG!

  30. Way to get a win on the road when we didn't seem to play that well outside of Smart. 3 of our next 4 road games (UTSA, Rice, La Tech, Southern Miss) are very winnable, so glad to see us showing we can pull them out on the road. Taking care of these road games against beatable teams early on would be huge for building momentum. As was this game.

  33. Reff may want to spent a lot more time in the film room then, because he was terrible at his job for nearly half the year instead of breaking it down with fans... But maybe it would help him since he apparently has no idea what to do or change... Also, it would be hilarious to see him (Reff) explain the repeated screws since the same things happened nearly every other game.

  34. Oh good grief. Multiple sources have reported the Indy Bowl wanted to find a P5 to play FSU. Any P5 and they find a way to get out of inviting a CUSA team. Since no P5 was available, the committee at the Indy Bowl wanted a known commodity in USM. The committee is very familiar with USM and I've read committee members didn't want to take a chance on any other CUSA team for reasons of their own. This has been reported by multiple folks from multiple different schools. It's not "speculation." It's not a failure of the CUSA office. It's not some giant conspiracy against NT fans. As for NM verse NO, have you ever been to Albuquerque? There are a lot of great destinations in New Mexico, but Albuquerque isn't one of them. As for the game, you had a 7-5 Colorado State team with no significant wins or a 10-2 Troy team that beat LSU. Causual fans who follow the SEC ALL heard about Troy beating LSU. They might not know what conference Troy is in, but if you watched college football in 2017, you heard about Troy beating LSU. Colorado State, not a lot of coverage for beating San Jose State and New Mexico. Don't give some silly "perception" argument as this season fans who watched ESPN or other sports TV saw that Troy was better in dozens of news stories. Since there never was any option for NT to play a P5 school, Baker took the best available choice. It was the best available team in the best available location.

  35. Lots of silly comments on here, but why let the facts get in the way of your on-line narrative. Bowl invites are the product of bowl selection committees, conference affiliation, ticket sales, revenue potential, tv ratings potential, conference politics, program status, and finally a team’s record. The facts remain: The Independence Bowl never extended an invite. Southern Miss is historically better than UNT. 18 consecutive winning seasons. 7 winning seasons out of the last ten. Won the New Orleans Bowl last season. Has played in the NO Bowl 3 times in the last 10 years. LA Tech played in the NO Bowl two seasons ago. An Army rematch at the Armed Forces Bowl wasn’t in anyone’s best interest. So that left a choice between New Mexico and New Orleans. The “we should have waited” crowd are ignoring the reality that the conference has to play nice with its bowl partners, and the school has to play nice with the conference. Waiting would have probably looked like this; NO Bowl invites Marshall, New Mexico takes LA Tech. UNT is then on the clock for the Frisco Bowl. The Inpendence Bowl is telling the room they are only taking Southern Miss, and UTSA is ready to accept the Frisco invite. UNT folds and accepts the Frisco invite. The haters on this board are still going to scream, we still should have waited and forced the i-bowl to pick us. In the process burning every conference and bowl bridge along the way.

  36. I am not on board with people in attendance automatically meaning more exciting. Arguably the most exciting football game I ever was at was the Utah State game in '97 and there were probably like....500 people in Fouts.

  37. C+, which can be upgraded (or downgraded) with more games. 7-6 currently on the year. Won all expected games (Eureka College, Bethune Cookman, Rogers State, Grambling State, Indiana State and McNeese State). I had San Diego as a toss up from what I knew of them. Lost all expected games (Nebraska, Georgia Tech, OU, UTA, Georgetown) Lost to a below .500 UTRGV team at home (which I projected as a Win) Unlike many, I refuse to give McClasland extra credit because Tony Benford was bad and he doesn't appear to be. Instead, my expectation is to see similar results enjoyed at Arkansas State in his lone season there. Still early I really like the addition of Roosevelt Smart and Duffy. Gibson will contribute in the future. Don't like what I have seen in bringing in Arikawe and Michael Miller as Juco guys. Juco's should be impact guys or major contributors. The Russian's situation was somewhat of a gamble and hasn't paid off this year. Not sure why we have a transfer (J. Simmons) using up a valuable scholarship this year to play next year. (Looked like a modest contributor while at ArkSt) Inherited a nice PG in Woolridge, Lawson and a nice prospect in Zach Simmons. Lawson played better last year but Shane Temara is playing much better. Maybe its just the adjustment to a new system at this point. I think we missed a golden opportunity to add to the mix with 7 scholarships for this team and not getting production out of 4 of them (for various reasons). Coaching is better but recruiting is equally important. I'm sure he will end up being a good hire. Just depends on what we look like 3-5 years down the road. I was a student during 3 consecutive 20+ seasons under Bill Blakely; with the top talent the state had to offer and having the best program in Texas. Attendance was at an all-time high and the Pit was electric. It's on my bucket list to see those times again. Hopefully this coach can help move the needle.

  38. Unfortunately was not at the Western Kentucky volleyball match, but #TheDrive against UTSA will undoubtedly be my favorite Mean Green moment as a student. Guys around me were cursing and heading for the exits after the terrible play call on fourth down the possession before. But with three timeouts, I knew there was enough time for a stop and score, even when the UTSA punt was downed at our 2. Not taking anything away from the volleyball ladies, though. I was finally able to catch their last three games at home in 2017 and they are one hell of a team. Now that I have a normal full time job with normal hours, I will make sure to make it out to more games in 2018.

  39. No.Troy has a much better team than UNT and So. Miss., and would have played FSU closer that the Golden Eagles. So. Miss. was picked because they travel well compared to the CUSA choices available to the Indy. Bowl.

  43. Neither the SBC or CUSA have enough teams to garner much interest from decent bowls. In CUSA, Marshall, USM, and MUTS are pretty well received nationally, with LT also getting some attention. But that’s it. No one in the SBC gets national respect, but Troy might be changing that with their ability to compete with P5s. Benson and McLeod aren’t good, but they don’t exactly have a winning hand to play most of the time, either.

  45. The New Orleans bowl was only missing a few ingredients: 1. A UNT win 2. More UNT fans 3. A UNT party bar pre and post game the date is always going to pose a challenge. So if you are not graduating that weekend of 2018, start saving now for an amazingly fun destination and weekend! I personally don’t think we get there next year but prep time for that trip to boca and New Orleans or New Mexico is vital. You don’t want to miss Fine and Littrell’s first Bowl Win! Heck let’s make our trip to pig land like a bowl game with fan hotel, fan bar, fan tailgate and friendly travel packages. GMG

  48. You’re comical to read. You have any idea what our rushing stats for that game looked like? Even without Fine’s sacks... in the first half we had 13 rushes for 11 yards not sure what sack totals did to that. We could not run the ball vs them. Our ONLY chance was to try and throw it all over them.
