My 2 cents: MVP (Odus Mitchell Award): Mason Fine Outstanding Offensive Player (Steve Ramsey Award): Jeffrey Wilson Outstanding Defensive Player (Joe Greene Award): E J Ejiya Outstanding Special Team Player (Abner Haynes Award): Trevor Moore (hard not to give it to Trevor but I thought Taylor Robinson also had a great season on special teams) Outstanding Offensive Back (Jaquay Wilburn Award) : Jeffrey Wilson Outstanding Offensive Lineman (Phil Armour Award): Sosaia Mose ( don't remember any bad snaps) Outstanding LB (Byron Gross Award): Ejiya Outstanding DB (Bill Brashier Award): McLain (though I thought he had a down year) or Khari Muhammed Outstanding DL ( Bill Bishop Award): Rod Young Most inspirational (Shawn Kramer Award): ? ( maybe Flusche, leading by example) Newcomer: Mike Lawrence (technically not new but he only had 1 reception last year)4 points

Coming off one of the best fall seasons in North Texas athletics’ history, fans and athletes were treated to great sporting events on what felt like a nightly basis. Now View Full Article3 points

I wish some the Gen-Xers understood the importance of honoring your commitments. They're too caught up in themselves and and the attention social media brings them and their egos.3 points

I'm amazed that some of you have such in depth knowledge of the bowl selection process. Your insider knowledge is imprressive.3 points

You can't spell "bowl game" without "UNT." Well, actually you can but you shouldn't. Just ask the Heart of Dallas Bowl. I bet they will ask early and loud next year. GO MEAN GREEN3 points

I agree. We need 8-4, 9-3 seasons on the regular for awhile. 5 years at a minimum.3 points

Hope our players had fun in New Orleans. SL wanted to reward them with a fun bowl destination. Would have been cool to see how many mean green fans would have traveled to Shreveport.3 points

Almost guaranteed a scholarship at this point. He has been in the program 2 years so if they put him on scholly it will only count against the 85 total limit and not the 25 yearly limit. No brainer imo.3 points

We can talk about poor recruiting and needing a new DC but lets not forget what a great season we had. Conference West Title and another bowl berth. But I think what could help more than anything in recruiting is being able to say we were not only the top G5 in Texas but also better records than any G5 from Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. North Texas 9-5 Houston 7-5 SMU 7-6 Louisiana Tech 7-6 Arkansas State 7-5 NMSU 6-6 UTSA 6-5 Louisiana Lafayette 5-7 Tulane 5-7 Louisiana Monroe 4-8 New Mexico 3-9 Texas State 2-10 Tulsa 2-10 RIce 1-11 UTEP 0-123 points

I am not sure this will have such a huge effect on ticket sales. Maybe it will affect some corporate donations or large donations for sports palaces. My primary reason for making my donations for my seats is to get the good seats not necessarily to affect my tax situation. Rich people want to be seen in the best places; and a country club section of a premier sporting event is a nice place to brag about your returns in the market with your buddies.3 points

Michael Lawrence deserves a scholly. He was phenomenal this year.3 points

Seriously? We won 9 games. In a bowl in back to back seasons for the 2nd time ever. Literally no single national publication or sportswriter picked us to win more than 7. You are delusional. Was our D good? No. But we won 9 games. We also were top 10 in the country in "Big Plays" meaning our D was on the field a lot. Also, in games when we struggle offensively Seth and Graham continue to throw the ball a lot. There is no "running the clock" to keep the score close. So scores get way out of hand in a hurry. If we ran it more to milk the clock and played more conservatively in all three phases, the score (and defense) would look a little better. Regardless, we'll be highly favored to go to a bowl for the third straight year next year. And SL will have the 2nd best 3 year start for a head coach at UNT if we do. Yet all you can do is gripe and bitch about every damn thing. Here is a stat that was on twitter today. SportSourceAnalytics @SportSourceA Just another reminder: from 2013-present, just four programs have won 9+ games each year, just 11 have won 8+ games each year, just 23 have won 7+ games each year, and just 33 have not had a season in last five years when they won less than six games. Only 23 teams in the country have averaged 7+ wins over the last 4 seasons. You know who's averaging 7 wins in his two seasons at UNT? SL. No one on this board is claiming the defense was great or that they are satisfied. But 99% see the progress being made in this program.3 points

Some may have been wondering how this match-up happened... "Texas Tech and West Virginia were the Big 12’s last schools without a bowl destination. The Mountaineers, at 7-5 to Tech’s 6-6 record, had first choice in selecting between coming to Dallas or the Birmingham Bowl." "The game was supposed to feature a team from the Big 12 and the Big Ten. The Big Ten didn’t meet its bowl obligations. A "backup" agreement was in place for a Pac-12 team to fill the spot, said Brant Ringler, executive director of the game." http://www.star-telegram.com/sports/article187863349.html C-USA never addressed how or why it lost the HOD to the Big10, and certainly never mentioned that the PAC had the back up agreement. It was a terrible game, in front of a terrible crowd, on a terrible day. I hope Mr. Ringler and the rest of the HOD Committee remember the 2017 HOD for a long time. You're right, they're not the same. You can support your school and celebrate a good year in college football. A year in which expectations were greatly exceeded. A year in which young players emerged, giving us hope for even better years to come. OR, you can try your damnedest to find negatives. That's what you choose Ben. Sad, really.3 points

Just saw it for a couple of minutes, but there seems to be a lot of empty seats near the field2 points

CUSA has the HOD spot back next year I believe. That should be the goal against hopefully a P5 team. You know, unless we make our College Football Playoff debut.2 points

The New Orleans bowl was only missing a few ingredients: 1. A UNT win 2. More UNT fans 3. A UNT party bar pre and post game the date is always going to pose a challenge. So if you are not graduating that weekend of 2018, start saving now for an amazingly fun destination and weekend! I personally don’t think we get there next year but prep time for that trip to boca and New Orleans or New Mexico is vital. You don’t want to miss Fine and Littrell’s first Bowl Win! Heck let’s make our trip to pig land like a bowl game with fan hotel, fan bar, fan tailgate and friendly travel packages. GMG2 points

There weren't many people on here disrespecting the NOB itself. It's a fine, average bowl. The problem was the totality of the circumstances which made it basically a lose/lose. We may not have had a choice and that's fine. But it was less than ideal. Just because it's inflated (probably more than double) attendance figures are better than 9 other bowls doesn't change that.2 points

Outside of Fine and Wilson, easily the most consistent offensive player we have. Fun to watch and easy guy to root for.2 points

It sure should! Can't really have a guy who had this much production and keep him without a ship. It would set a really demotivating example to the future walk-ons.2 points

Sounds like we had no shot at the HOD bowl this year so it's a non issue, but turning down a shot at a P5 in your own backyard would have been a ridiculous decision.2 points

I'd drop Bahamas in Year One and then look at average percent of capacity type of criteria to see who to drop the next 4-5 years after that. I mean even dropping 5-6 Bowls, more than half the schools in the country who play D1 will be going to a Bowl, so I think most people wouldn't miss them. I seriously used to watch at least parts of basically every Bowl game there was back in the day (and people THEN used to complain when it was only like twenty of them). Even when it got upwards of 30 Bowls or more I tried to at least tune in for some of the game. But now we're at 40+ and that just seems ridiculous, even for me.2 points

Pinstripe Bowl, Hawaii Bowl, Bahama Bowl, Boise Bowl. There's 4 right there. The problem is that if they were to eliminate bowls, they would be sure to eliminate the ones that take G5 teams.2 points

Ben, I'm just making the point that UNT won 50% more games than you predicted & went to the conference game when you thought they wouldn't. I wonder how bad your attitude would be if your expectations had been met. The green koolaid glass is half full Ben. Take a sip - it's delicious!2 points

I agree with @untjim1995 analysis on our chances in OOC games next year. I will add the SL does appear to actually TRY to win every game, unlike some of our coaches in the past. IF we were to beat the Pig People at their house, it would be a game we'd talk about for years to come. And if it happened, it would likely guarantee SL would have P5 job offers at the end of next year.2 points

Funny the SWC was worried about the academics of NTSU when corruption was the name of the game in the SWC.2 points

Plane crash was in 1970 on the way to play Utah State. They didn't drop football till 1986 when the Missouri Valley Conference dropped football. I was just looking it up and at the time the MVC dropped football in 1985 they had a mix of two 1A programs - Wichita State and Tulsa and five 1AA programs. The only one of the seven programs that played football in CUSA was Tulsa. Tulsa wasn't a charter member. So, the chances that NT staying in the MoValley and thus becoming a part of the founding of CUSA weren't very good. Louisville went Independent in 75. Cincy in 69. Memphis in 73. Those three joined independents Southern Miss and Tulane to form CUSA football in 95 with Houston planning to join but playing out the last year of SWC football in 95. While it didn't work out for NT, going indy in the late 60 /early 70s seems to have been the route for most of the football playing founders of CUSA. The others all stayed football independents and managed to avoid the 1AA drop down by various means.2 points

I think it’s more of a talent issue then a coordinator issue. We just don’t have the athletes to put pressure in the backfield without blitzing.2 points

We're not seeing the results we would want but it is better. It's been reported that McCarney's staff did very little recruiting. This staff is doing a much better job of building relationships with high schools. Now they need to start bringing in bigger, faster, stronger players.1 point

It is self evident that it is. The fact that we haven't been able to recruit here consistently for decades makes it self evident.1 point

First, what kind of collar are we talking about? Traditional, prong, choke? Or what if there is no collar and we're employing some sort of harness, perhaps an Easy Lead or Gentle Leader? There are so many questions to answer before we can even begin to know if the collar will prod, pinch, or constrict around our troubled recruits' necks! Of course, someone could question why we're treating players like dogs or sexual submissives in the first place. Damn, we have a lot to discuss this offseason!1 point
