West Georgia drops Braves nickname in favor of Wolves in move to abide by NCAA regulations

CARROLLTON, Ga. — West Georgia dropped its Braves nickname in favor of Wolves in a move to abide by NCAA regulations.

West Georgia president Beheruz Sethna on Thursday accepted the recommendation of a task force that chose Wolves over two other finalists: Patriots and RedHawks.

I believe ASU is also flirting with the idea of switching to the wolves.  You'll more then likely see schools switch to mascots that are akin to Indians (ie wolves).

This PC crap is way the heck out of control!

Man we need to get a grip as a nation!

Why? Seriously what is so bad about ditching the negative stereotypes of ancient cultures? Oh, we'll give them casinos and that'll make everything ok, right...?

Its funny how nobody would have any problems with this if the PC cops were making schools drop their nicknames if they were the fightin slaves, or bus boycotting n-ggers, but when its an almost extinct population everybody is up in arms.

Its a little different if its the Fighting Irish which has a certain history to it, or if the tribes of the Seminoles or Souix deem it ok, but its about time something was done at Miami U or Syracuse. I mean have you seen the ASU mascot? Tell me that wouldn't insult you if you had more than 1/8th of Native American blood in you. I know it would me.

Actually, No it would not!

People are way too sensitive these days and are just looking for things to complain about. Maybe kids should be punished if they play cowboys and indians. I guess you would want to ban all the old westerns because they are not PC either. Surely people have better things to worry about. Then maybe rewrite history to make it correct in light of the PC police. Those evil white men that unprovoked wiped out most the indians, and the Indians were all saints. When you start such crusades you find most everything there is offends someone! People are people and should just worry about being Americans.

I know for a fact that one of the areas Indian tribes either Comanche or Kiowas had a very good relationship with Midwestern State and had no problem with the mascot. I believe they gave their blessings to each and every student and faculty member. If that is the case I see no reason why they were FORCED to change the name to Mustangs (still relates to native american heritage).

No, and people shouldn't stop playing or making games like Grand Theft Auto because they glorify the gang life, nor should people stop seeing Carlos Mencia or buying his CD's.

We should however be more sensitive to what basically amounts to European immigrants (oh no not just a dirty word to describe mexicans!) running Native Americans off their land and then attempting to justify using symbols of their culture for our football game war chants.

Last time I checked the names Indians or Braves were not derogatory, but usually used as a term of honor.  Also, since when did the American Indian start to become extinct?  BTW, I'm roughly a 1/4 Indian.

Well seeing as how many tribes no longer exist and if you were to compare #'s from say 1600 to 2006 I'd say their population has dwindled.

And while the names may not be used in a derrogatory manor, some symbols mascots and/or imagery can be perceived as exactly that.

Well I'm done saying my bit seeing as how I know I'm going to be outnumbered 30 to 1 on this board, but just for the record I don't think any of you who find native american names ok to be sheet wearing racists, I can understand your point of view.

I still don't see why I should be sensitive to indians, feel sorry for them or anything else, as far as I can recall many pioneers in Texas had their whole families killed my nomadic indians. In fact I live next to one of the oldest cemeteries in Dallas and supposedly several of the early graves in there were do to indian attacks. From what the old timers that used live around here when I was young would tell tales their grandfathers had told them and some of the journals I have read were unprovoked attacks. There is much more to the tale then what recent media would have you believe.

There are two sides to most everything, but that is over with and now we should be Americans and if we need a distinction I like Texan!

What I remember of world history there was always some group of people over running some other group of people but life goes on. Groups give in surrender or worst and finally merge with the dominate society. My heritage consists of 1/4 Sicilian, 1/4 Lithuanian, 1/4 English, and 1/4 Irish, and who knows before that. The so called native Americans migrated here from Asia.

There is a thing called popular history and it usually gets in the history books also. But on any subject from civil war to Iraq today the more you study it the more complex it becomes. Right now it is becoming more and more popular to be pro-indian.

Well unless you can prove exactly where the garden of eden is, or where the first ape became a man, then everybody is an immigrant.

The first man is suposed to be in or around northeastern africa, but you just made the point I was trying to, "everybody is an immigrant". Exactly!

Mean Green - I dont like the fact that it makes us seem mean, when many of us are in fact nice. And I think its offensive how we exclude other colors of the rainbow from our mascot.

Longhorn - Why should we single out that poor animal? It has feelings too.

Cardinals - Its offensive to Catholics.

Wolves - Its offensive becuase wolves are only fierce if you approach them.

Patriots - By calling a team that, you are saying that I am not a patriotic American if I do not root for them

Americans - That team name is offensive to immigrants.
