Jon is not our DC. But we brought in 3 of his disciples. I def think there will be growing pains. The point I was making is the Iowa State defense is not loaded with 5 star talent. Iowa State has not finished better than fifth in the big 12 the last half decade in recruiting. And only came in 5th once. But yet the defense has been near the top in both country and confernce year end and year out.10 points

Mason's first action didn't come until the 4th quarter. He opened with an interception but then recovered nicely... "Fine finished the contest 8-for-10 passing for 110 yards with two touchdowns and one interception." https://www.tsn.ca/cfl/saskatchewan-roughriders-rally-to-top-visiting-bc-lions-in-cfl-pre-season-tilt-1.19659369 points

I agree that we should market the Cal game hard. I just think you could leave off “the first Power Five opponent to visit Denton since 2011.” Something like: UNT will host the Cal Golden Bears of the PAC 12 to open the season This identifies them as a school from a known conference without implying that they and their ilk are superior to us.6 points

Let’s hope this works out better than our last ASU DB transfer. As with most of our recent transfers, I don’t see this as someone expected to come in and start. Many of these seem like depth prices, which is fine.4 points

https://247sports.com/college/arizona-state/Article/Tarik-Luckett-ASU-transfer-portal-Sun-Devils-Ro-Torrence-Macen-Williams-Isaiah-Johnson-208914135/Amp/ Here's more information about his background. Let's give the guy a chance. He started a couple of games at Colorado and played some at Arizona State. The speed of the game shouldn't phase him. He hasn't suited up for us yet, and you're already shitting on him.4 points

Iowa state defense has been the best D in big 12 last half decade.. and they haven’t been over ran with 5 star guys. that found guys that fit the system. I’m going to trust them till I’m proven wrong. I don’t think it will be a one year turn around. But using the same tactics they used in building Iowa state defense Kratch and Caponi will get this thing rolling3 points

1A and 1AA (now FBS and FCS) are completely different subdivisions within college football, each with its own championship. They are official NCAA subdivisions. Any 1AA/FCS school wishing to be classified as a 1A/FBS school can do so, provided it meets certain clear criteria. "P5" and "G5" are arbitrary designations conjured by some media man/major conference lapboy. It says who has a seat a the big boys' table, implying those who do deserve a seat a the big boys' table--even though they have to meet no other criteria than be in one of the 5 conference where the biggest of the big boys are--while those left in G5 evidently deserve no opportunity even to compete for a championship. With the most recent realignments "P5" and "G5" is not an accurate picture of anything. There are tremors in the ACC right now. What we will have shortly is the "Power 2," "Group of 5," and the "Middle 3," with some flux as to who is "Group of" and who is "Middle."2 points

Jon Heacock is not out DC though. I get the excitement of newness, & I know your role has kinda morphed over the last year or so to a more diplomatic-type, but please understand the concerns are very valid. When one of the top LBs to wear Green just graduated (the guy that basically kept the defense somewhat respectable almost single-handedly), and you lose your 2nd best LB to the portal, I think it’s completely acceptable to expect some growing pains under a 1st-year DC.2 points

"Texas State’s 2023 recruiting class is nearing the half-century mark after three more transfers pledged this week: West Virginia defensive backs Caleb Coleman and Jaylon Shelton and Colorado offensive tackle Alex Harkey. And with Texas linebacker Derrick Brown committing last Friday, the Bobcats now have 49 new players, including 35 transfers from FBS or FCS schools and seven junior college players." If that's the case, then there is a chance that the AAC will become a part of the middle group. We are in large markets (except Greenville NC). We will improve our schedule and play mostly those in the Big XII, ACC and an occasional Pac 12. AAC attendance will increase due to the opponent and that non-major market member (East Carolina) will continue to draw 50,000 for their home games.1 point

This link covers a lot of UNT personnel. Feel free to address your concerns with them. https://meangreensports.com/staff-directory1 point

The reason it is relevant is because it shows what can be done in the current unregulated climate, when there is no longer any limit to the number of scholarships that can be offered in one year, other than total roster limits.1 point

Attaboy Mason !!! Just keep doing what you’ve always done, you’re a winner !1 point

I see your point, but I don't think we should ignore the marketing value of a P5 coming to Denton just because we wish it was common for P5s to come to Denton. As Don Rumsfeld said, "You sell season tickets with the schedule you have, not the schedule you might want or wish to have at a later time"1 point

Weren’t they awful last year? I’d hope they have an influx of talent. We won 7 games and went bowling. The cupboard was far from bare. I like What we’re doing.1 point

While I believe he probably did things that he should/will go to prison for, do y'all believe that 13 girls took money and agreed to NDAs? I'm assuming some of these girls were under 18 and the parents would have agreed to it. As a dad of a daughter there is no way I agree to this, so to find multiple dads/parents is unbelievable to me.1 point

This looks really bad and if proven true, he needs to pay the price. Re: The Tweet by Justis M. trying to make a connection with Art Briles at Stephenville is ridiculous. Briles left Stephenville before Renfro was even born. The fact that they both have a connection to Stephenville is nothing more than a coincidence. Now, the connection to Baby Briles…not saying there’s anything to it, but it’s definitely worth mentioning.1 point

Honestly, I think the fight against the P5-G5 distinction is a losing battle. If you break the P5-G5 naming convention, someone will come up with something new to distinguish the two groups.1 point

You need to get it in your head that Craven is a UTSA grad. His posts will make a lot more sense.1 point
-
Tell that to UTSA fans. They think he's over critical of UTSA. People just love to hate writers because they don't constantly pump up their favorite team. He just predicted us to go 7-5 next year. That's way more optimistic than a lot of people here think.1 point

Where have you been? We do not get much respect from many media outlets, other fan's, etc., etc. This is not surprising, or upsetting, get over it and used to it. When we earn respect we will get it. Welcome to UNT.1 point

What's biased about what he said? You agree that UTSA would go 5-7 in the SBC? I sure don't.1 point
-
The claim itself is absurd. UTSA would do very well in the Sun Belt the same as they have in CUSA the last couple of years. I don't think Craven hates UNT, he's just a massive UTSA homer, and it bleeds into his writing and gets quite annoying. We, as a collective fanbase on Twitter and on GMG, call him out for it all the time and it makes him mad. For all I care he can kick rocks, but DCTF is one of the only outlets that covers UNT on a broader basis (albeit very poorly at times). I don't hate the guy. He just wears his orange and blue on his sleeve, much like we wear green on ours. Problem is he's the lead college writer that is supposed to be unbiased against ALL Texas universities, and he isn't.1 point

You left out a key group: High school kids. Of the 7 guys we have left: 6 came to us from high school (Rubin, A Scott, Matty Stone, Chrisdon Morgan, Christian Moore, and incoming freshman Alex Cotton). Moulaye came here via the portal. I wonder if coaches are getting too much transfer portal tunnel vision. Brandon Goble, (Juco Advocate and co-owner of Verbal Commits) thinks so. Said he knows of a good kid at Hutchison CC in Kansas...averaged 17 ppg....having a tough time getting interest. Whereas, schools are signing portal guys averaging single digit points....who have character issues. (not talking about us....in that regard). Anyway....seems to me the portal guys this year....all have their hands out wanting a cash deal. All the more reason to go after juco and high school kids who just want a shot at Div. 1 basketball.1 point
