  1. I agree. I graduated last spring and donated $25 to the athletic program. I have a good amount of student loans that I’m paying off, but $25 for the whole year isn’t a ridiculous sacrifice.

  8. I'm hoping this is my last response on this topic. I've been way more invested in this thread than I should be. I guess it's just that I can clearly see the different mindsets by generation. My issue with asking within a few years after graduation is these young adults are tired of college and being broke. Give them some time to accumulate some wealth and assets (house, own car, etc...) and then start the conversation. Starting immediately after college left a bad taste in my mouth which that alone takes time to get past. Like somebody else mentioned, after paying for every little thing including scantrons to take tests, now you want MORE money? Give it time before asking for the first time. 5 years down the line, you introduce the thought to somebody and they might be in a good spot financially to where they can happily accept and donate. Graduating college with these loan debt amounts felt like a bad breakup to me and the last thing I wanted to do was give UNT MORE money. That said, with the amount of data out there, I feel universities would be better off creating time frames to start contacting graduates based on their level of debts. I'm sure universities know how much students owe Sallie Mae. How quickly they start asking for donations should depend on how much money the owe. The more they owe, the longer you wait before contacting them. If somebody really wants to donate anyways, I'm sure they will.

  9. Looked like the girls team, just throw up threes no matter how many have been missed. On the other side, La Tech played a fantastic game. I rather NT lose to anyone but La Tech, but I think this loss was more due to their good play than NT's bad.

  10. Watching Bracey at the end felt like watching Doolittle take over at the end for OU. On us for not shooting better throughout the game but not a lot you can do about Bracey. Having a better rim protector than Simmons could’ve stopped Bracey there, but we just don’t have that unfortunately.

  13. So the “security personnel” can’t be bothered to check tickets and allow people to sit in seats they didn’t pay for, however if your foot is in the aisle they will certainly tell you that your out of compliance. They will also go out of their way to move kids who are at the top seats even if accompanied by an adult because.... we’ll because? These people are a joke. Wren either needs to tell them how to do their job or cut them from the athletic budget. Show me where it says that if you pay for your seat you cannot sit at the very top, but also if you have pay for your seat other people can sit in it.... GET OUT OF HERE!

  16. Easy answer...they needed adults in the room. Ken, being the adult, knew from the beginning that he would have to sell...he had no choice and that no public shaming of the university was going to change anything. He knew that working with the university to get the best deal they could was the way to go. Thus, Hunter, who wanted to stick his head in the sand and play the martyr roll was cut out and did not know until two weeks after the deal that the above deal had been agreed upon. They now have a year at a rent of $1 to figure out their next move...and oh, that wad of cash as well...way way over appraised value. I hate that this has happened, but all one had to do was "look around" to know the inevitable was approaching and pretty darn fast. The university area has lost quite a few of these locally owned small businesses over the years, and that is a shame. But, also a sign of the times and not specific or limited to UNT. Some say, well, gee, they can't move and re-open elsewhere as it just wouldn't be the same. Maybe true...maybe not. They have VERY little equipment and furniture that could easily be moved to a new location and UNT would gladly allow them to take everything they wanted to take. So, sure, not the easiest of things to do and certainly a tad risky for the business, but they have one year to figure it out (one year from the date of the signing of the agreement...whenever that was or will be). If you want to, a year is plenty of time to figure it all out. And, who knows, it might even stretch well past that one year date. While sad that another small business will go away from the university area, and be taken off the tax rolls, it is an opportunity. It is up to the current ownership to do what they will with that opportunity. I wish them nothing but the best of luck and am most happy that the attempt at "public shaming" of UNT will end. As anyone with a cool head and a business sense knew...this was going to be the end result. UNT was going to buy that property. They did...and Ken got a good deal. Now...on to the next adventure for the Sub Hub...I hope. Car wash and bookstore up next in the negotiations...maybe Hunter can help them out with a cool attempt at public shaming...worked so well for him, right? Ha! Me thinks the car wash and bookstore owners are more on the business acumen of Ken rather than Hunter. WE shall see...we shall see.

  19. Oh I agree that the university has to make up for revenue shortfalls and that students largely fit the bill. I remember T one point a few years ago we had one of the highest percentages of amount of AD budget financed by student fees. Hence the need for alumni donations.

  26. That is not true, no part of tuition is used for athletics. Tuition have risen for several reasons that a simple read of any number of studies will confirm: - states cut funding due to budget issues - significant increase in demand for college education. It’s nearly a requirement now to have a degree - increase demand = increase price - increased financial aide. More money available so colleges can charge more. other costs related to attending college have risen also, but not at the same rate as tuition.

  27. Do you think it was some conspiracy to hike up tuition? Did they just arbitrarily decide that it would be fun? The Texas legislature cut funding so tuition went up. At the same time funding formulas rewarded growing student populations which triggered the college arms race (needing to construct new dorms and such plus building expensive recreation centers and student unions and the like to attract students). Thus student fees also went up. Easy access to loans, however, made a free market approach somewhat irrelevant, since students could “afford” the rising costs by taking on debt. But please don’t act like universities just wanted to charge more. ———————— “Since higher education funding is discretionary, increases in funding usually come in years when Texas’ economy is strong. It’s also often the first place to see cuts when the economy is on a downturn. Tuition deregulation was done in 2003 in part to make up for higher education cuts made as lawmakers tried to address a $10 billion deficit without raising taxes. In 2011, higher education saw another round of budget cuts after the housing crash.” “There’s only so much funding available after the state makes its required payments. Officials often say the state essentially “backs into” a total number for higher education within the overall general revenue without much wiggle room unless they decide to increase funding. The state then uses formulas to distribute that allocated pot of money across all public universities. Formulas are based on the number of classes universities provide and semester credit hours are weighted depending on the class. For instance, a nursing or engineering class costs more to teach than an English or philosophy class, because they can require expensive equipment and lab space.” “One thing is clear: since deregulation, every Texan attending college in-state has seen their tuition bill increase. Between 2003 and 2017, the statewide average total academic charges increased 138 percent. At the same time, state investment in higher education declined by six percent when adjusted for inflation.” “Last year, Texas students graduated college with an average of almost $27,000 in student debt...about two times more than when deregulation took effect.“ https://alcalde.texasexes.org/2019/01/looking-at-higher-education-funding-in-texas-and-how-we-got-here/ “While the underlying concept of deregulation makes sense in more traditional free markets, proponents of the law in Texas failed to take a key factor into account: the explosion of readily accessible student loan debt.“ ”Since 2003, tuition and fees at Texas public universities have more than doubled, and designated tuition (the portion of tuition set directly by the universities) has increased an astounding 222 percent.” https://www.statesman.com/news/20161128/sen-schwertner-how-tuition-deregulation-is-failing-texas-students https://www.texasmonthly.com/burka-blog/taking-on-tuition-deregulation/

  28. I graduated in 2018. I take advantage of the Young Alumni discount program but intend to up my gift every year.... be it only a small gift now. They do not require much to take advantage of the program and its goes for 5 years. Its an easy way to get on board without digging too deep into your pockets.

  35. The Border Patrol uses all kinds of tools to patrol the areas with nothing or small fencing. They have asked for more funding around those tools, like heat sensors, drone technology, and even sensors that can detect underground tunnels. I'm saying if we could divert the funding to this, and hiring more agents as well, we may have more success. And since there is such overcrowding at our current detaining facilities, we need to re-vamp/expand them so these folks aren't sleeping on bathroom floors and whatnot.

  37. Here’s the thing, y’all. It’s not just UNT alums; it’s universal. The current Millennial generation (ages 24-40) has access to something like only 2.9% of the nation’s wealth, and Gen Z behind them is projected to continue that trend. Until that dynamic changes, you’ll likely not see a warm enthusiasm towards any entity that helps accrue personal debt.

  38. Barring a complete meltdown these last 4 games, I think NT really just needs to win the WKU game to put 2 games in between them. Everything else will take care of itself. Beat WKU, then lose the rest, and WKU has to win all 3 of their remaining games to pass us (probably not going to happen). Same with LATech. Lose to LATech, and there's still a game between us plus tiebreakers. Lose to WKU, and the other games become way more important.

  41. dude had the chance to play at a top 10 program BECAUSE of everything he gave here...and because he fulfilled his academic commitment to UNT. you want to be angry that he left, blame past administrations and ADs for their decision making, hires and priorities. a real UNT Basketball supporter will cheer against Gonzaga if and only if we play them in the tournament. Anyone hating on Ryan for his decision can Go Zag themselves with a rusty metal spike.

  42. After reading some of his quotes about how great Gonzaga is compared to NT, I really am not that interested in his play there. He is an one of a kind player; and will continue to do well. If he can develop an outside shot, he could be a good pro prospect.
