  1. My time was way different than everyone else. I grew up in Denton so I lived at home with my parents until the second semester of my sophomore year. Then I moved to Windsor Village near Strickland Jr High now middle school. Woke up at the end of my sophomore year and decided to join the Army. Was planning on doing 3 or 4 years in the Army and coming back to UNT. Was enjoying it too much and 3 years turned into 23 years. Retired and decided I had unfinished business at UNT. The wife and I settled in Little Elm and I commuted to finish my Jr and Sr year. So, I must have had the longest break ever from Freshman to graduate. LOL

  2. I was working in Abilene this week and some of the folks I was dealing with are big ACU football supporters. Evidently, the university is making a BIG push to get as many of their people to the game in Denton as possible. One person was telling me their alumni association is planning a large tailgate beforehand and some social activities Friday night. I kept hearing about how their running game is going to give us all kinds of problems and they are expecting a surprise win. I just told them they are probably going to get their butt handed to them but to have a nice day anyway. GMG

  6. Watch that sort of language when talking to ACU fans! If you were an ACU student you'd get suspended for that sort of outburst.

  7. Abilene Christian use to travel well during our southland conference days. There was always a decent amount of purple in fouts when we played and more than a lot of other visiting schools. Today with their emerging and infused program I expect to see one of the largest traveling fan bases we have seen in apogee. I bet they resemble utsa that first year we played them or even one of the better utep showings. Lots o purple for that opener I am believing. GMG

  12. I believe that adding ODU was likely the right call. They already were selling out a 20,000 seat stadium and had promised to upgrade. The improvements that they are making seem first class. What is not first class is the capacity. They are increasing their capacity by only about a thousand seats which does not smack of FBS stature. The original requirement for Division 1A (FBS) status was a stadium of 30,000 and an attendance of 17,000. It's what tumbled us into Division 1AA because Chancellor Hurley was not willing to spend the money to upgrade Fouts to 30,000; choosing instead to spend the money on academics. To his credit, he did an excellent job of raising the academic stature of UNT but acknowledging that he did athletics no favor. At least, ODU did meet the attendance requirement, unlike Charlotte and FIU (both with small stadiums). Florida Atlantic didn't meet the stadium size or attendance requirement either but they did expand their stadium to 30,000 and, I believe, met the attendance requirement in at least one year. What if CUSA had the foresight to get Troy and Appalachian State instead of the two Floridas where would CUSA be today? Even Arkansas State and Louisiana would have been an improvement. I will say that FAU has improved to a satisfactory level since the hiring of Lane Kiffin and FIU could break through this year after hiring Butch Davis (but they still have a rinkydink stadium and poor attendance).

  14. Despite our recent success, historically we’re a .500 team...going undefeated, as Brett states, will be extremely difficult, but that’s what it takes in a G5 world we find ourselves in...need to go undefeated or damn near for a few seasons to have a shot at a New Years Six game... Glad Houston’s coming here. Need to travel well to SMU and pack the house for conference home games. With Fine in his senior season, best time as any to “get ‘er done”. Speaking of - need to cut the grass before it gets too hot this morning. GMG

  17. Cal fan here. While our LB unit is good, our DB’s are elite. Phil Steele ranks our defensive backfield as the 2nd best in the country, behind only LSU’s. Mason Fine should test them. He’s a very good QB. Best of luck to you. I look forward to the game.

  19. We win by 14 Also, this is by far the best looking home jersey option. I may be a crotchety old man these days, but green on white is how it should always be.

  24. I think the most expensive away tix I've bought through UNT were the Arkansas tix. They were $60 or $65. I doubt it's more than that. You can always buy through another ticket site, but you'll be sitting with the hostiles.

  26. if you think that I meant to call you, LongJim, personally racist...you're wrong. I haven't seen you fighting on the "c'mon, we're all a little racist" hill. plus, we've both been posting here long enough and for the most part I pay enough attention to know better. as for who made me arbiter...I don't know...a stupid internet message board? if my opinions/challenges/stances/philosophies were little more than trolling, I'd have long gone the way of CheckFacts, TFLF and EulessEagle. we absolutely don't have to agree, but I read your statement as basically saying "meh, what can you do?" if I'm wrong, please correct me I agree our system is meant to balance contrasting views. I think a debate about taxes and healthcare and economic policy is healthy. I don't think rationalizing a racist remark because it came from a person on my team is finding balance. If you're offended by that...maybe you should be.

  27. In some ways it’s a little embarrassing for us we typically don’t fill more of their stadium. We should have 15,000 people there. Maybe we will this time.

  31. You’ll love the ballpark. It’s gorgeous. Also, California Memorial Stadium is in one of the prettiest settings in all of college football. Make sure to check out the view of the bay and Golden Gate Bridge from the top of the the east rim. Also, Top Dog is a must. Best hot dogs ever and an iconic Berkeley institution.

  32. Here's the VERY simple Cliff notes of getting more donors- Years 1-3 You win and it rallies the people who are there thick and thin and they bump up their donations or maybe it's easier to get more money out of the few big donors. But overall it's a percentage change, not a cultural change. We've been bad or up and down so long that it probably feels like a lucky, passing phase to casual fans. Years 3-5 Winning becomes more of an expectation and the excitement grows however this is about when you lose your coach due to success. Also the CONCEPT of giving money to the athletic department just starts to enter people's brains who are new to the scene because of the success. People want to be part of the success so while the culture isn't there, it's percolating. Also, if you are a smart AD you make a good replacement coaching hire but also use the opportunity to tell wealthy people associated with the program "If you want this to continue, now's the time to step up." Hopefully five years of success has dulled the skepticism. Years 5-7 The success starts to pay off and the begging, kicking, knocking down doors, and begging some more for donations decreases from 95% of the time to about 80% of the time. Seriously, I doubt there's a G5 AD out there who doesn't hustle constantly for donations. But by now the concept of being a donor to the program has gone from "Nah, not for me" to "Yeah, I'm a member of the MGSF" and selling bigger projects to more successful donors is less of a tough sell. I went to a Boise State game last year and it's not like their tailgate scene or game presentation is any better than ours but EVERYTHING IS BOISE STATE. It's the place to be. People are bought in. We sat next to two older guys in the upper deck that couldn't fathom not going to a home game. It's just what they do. So yeah, it's going to take a while longer and some more good decisions along the way. I'm not even sure if a single event can speed up the process but I'd sure like to kick the hell out of A$M next year and test the theory.

  35. This is where the 1-AA debacle for 12 years just killed us. We would have such a higher rate of giving today from the graduates of the 80s and early 90s that are at points in their lives where they start making good money. Instead, we literally nuked two decades of fans because of this. Things have improved greatly here, but the reality is that our lack of support for athletics here for so long insured we will always be stuck in a non-power status. It’s just so sad that athletics got treated that poorly for so long by the BOR and administration, the faculty, student body, and local citizenry.

  36. I expect a much closer game than most do. As with most games, the difference will be who wins the turnover margin. I’d be surprised if Cal wins by more than 7-10 points and wouldn’t be too shocked to lose a tight one. Although, if we do lose to y’all it’s gonna be a long season for us in a stacked Pac 12 North. No offense.

  39. So interesting to see “Progressive” Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly......and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run. Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how....it is done here is the actual full quote. pardon me...here is the actual full racist quote.
