Honest question: what is there to do in the area for people staying the weekend? Not familiar at all with this area. Probably won't make it but people might be reluctant because of the lack of uhh.. Activities in Mississippi.

Worst case scenario, go low-key, find a dive bar with karaoke. I'm sure SMiss has a Brett Favre museum or something. Maybe with all of the Homecoming hubbub, there are some cool events on their campus. Hey, if you don't already have plans, and have the cash to make the trip, what's the worst that could happen? Random exploration is one of the best parts of road trips.

Stay in New Orleans and make the drive over prior to the game. It is less than a 2 hour drive.

I was told there is a GREAT BBQ joint but can't remember the name.

I'll be there, but I'll be in a tv production truck. Can't believe I get paid to watch NT football.

You might be talking about Letheas. Went there and I was satisfied. There's another popular one there too which I remember hearing a lot about but I didn't go there.

Lodging in Hattiesburg is tough in terms of finding great deals. There is a Fairfield Inn and Residence Inn that I tried to book for a long time but they were always in the 130+/night range and because I was going to be there a while I didn't have the courage to spend that much. So I stayed at the Days Inn which is literally right next to the two I mentioned. It's a very solid place and only paid 55/night. It's far from fancy but it was clean. But beware that if you or anybody in your travelling party need an elevator that Days Inn does not have one. They also have a light continental breakfast such as cereal, milk, boiled eggs etc. Bang for the buck I'd recommend the Days Inn and it's literally about 5-7 minute drive to campus and it located on the main street of the town.

Or, stay on the MS Gulf Coast (Bay St. Louis, Gulfport, Biloxi) - there's several casinos, and plenty of motels.

I haven't lived in H-burg in a while so I'm rusty on some of the "things to do" there, but you guys are badly mistaken if you buy into the Mississippi stereotype when it comes to Hattiesburg. Sure Hattiesburg isn't New Orleans/Houston/Atlanta, but it is a great college city with tons of people of all ages who like to have a good time. I'll try to give you a couple of my favorite spots, but H-burg has grown tremendously in the last few years so I may not know some of the newer places to go.

The keg and barrel was voted one of America's top 100 beer bars by draft magazine. This is the bar that Southern Prohibition brewery started out of. It has had a large hand in helping Raise Your Pints get archaic beer laws changed in Mississippi. They have a large selection of beer, and great food.

Leatha's is always raved about, but as you know everyone has different taste in BBQ. ESPN raves about Leatha's every time they come to town. Some people will say Leatha's is the best, but personally it doesn't fit my taste.

Robert St. John is a famous chef who has been featured on Food Networks Great American Seafood cook-off. If you visit his site his restaurants are linked at the bottom of the page. His most famous is Purple Parrot cafe, which is just off campus.

This is homecoming so there will be several events going on to accompany that.
