All About UNT

Recommended Posts

If you know the fight song, and sing it like everyone should, you are referring to UNT as the Eagles. A song that has remained our's and unchanged long before the internet. You're welcome to disagree, but I think our Fight Song takes precedent over a web page that receives more changes than a character in a Robin Williams movie montage.

It's only confusing if you can't make a distinction between a mascot and a moniker. We are the Mean Green. And we are the Eagles. They both can be official, because I think one is the apple and the other is the orange.

As long as this discussion is rehashed in the spirit of educating newer generations of Mean Green fans, I'm all for revisiting it.

The newest generation of students seems to like adding a certain word between the T and Eagles. It rhymes with brothertrucking. And I am guilty as charged.

Yes, a "tradition" that shows absolutely ZERO class and one I hope goes away very quickly. Stormchaser, how about you being one to help send it to the trash bin where it belongs? Stuff like that is what helps some folks think poorly about UNT and the Mean Green and does not help.

Edit: has nothing to do with age, has everything to do with class and respect.

classy. Just keep it away from the family pack sections in the wing zone.

Unfortunately it has a lot to do with age. I'm the first person to readily admit that the vast majority of people my age are spoiled little brats spawned from the age of instant information and instant gratification, and have no clue about what it's like to really live, and therefore lack class and respect. I was kidding about the guilty part, just making a joke. I didn't take part in it, just for the fact that there ARE families around. But, there isn't much I can do. It's the kind of thing that happens with students at any college...I hate my generation haha.

I was driving down I-30 somewhere around Sulphur Springs at the end of that game. By beating us that day Kansas State broke the nations longest losing streak and when we played SMU at Ownby later that year, (we lost) the SMU students kept chanting "Kansas St., Kansas St." at our players. ( Another reason to dislike the ponies).

In the few years preceding that game we had beaten Rice, TCU, Texas Tech and had really beaten Texas. We all know that story, of course.

For the younglings that don't know the story and for Green Jackal, who asked for a video of someone getting kicked in the crotch:

Overcussing is a sign of immaturity.

Adding a cuss word to the school fight song is a sign of disrespect for those came before you and just blatant stupidity.

I'm with KRAM here. Be apart of the solution. Stop it.

It doesn't sound cool, just crude and moronic.

These are absolutely gut wrenching games for all of us. The other games that were as gut wrenching (if not more-so) were games that we were supposed to win, but blew. I'll always remember one of our memorable games with ULM back in the late 80's or early 90's. It was a home game and we had a pretty good crowd. The two featured players for ULM during that game was a WR named Cisco Richard, and their QB was Doug Pederson. This was a very back-and-forth game, with most of the big plays being provided by Cisco Richard. Well, we pulled ahead at the end of the fourth Quarter and when ULM got the ball they started moving down the field.....thanks mostly to Doug Pederson and his go-to guy Cisco Richard. All the time that they were moving down the field and mainly converting on 3rd down and long, I stood up and kept yelling "WHO THE HELL IS COVERING RICHARD? ..or FORGODSAKES, SOMEBODY PLEASE PUT TWO GUYS ON HIM! IF YOU HAVEN'T FIGURED IT OUT BY NOW.....HE'S THEIR GO-TO GUY!

Well, guess what? They kept moving down the field on big plays (K-state style) and guess who caught the winning TD pass? You guessed it....CISCO RICHARD!

And to make it worse. As the officials signaled the TD, Doug Pederson turned to the North Texas crowd, bowed as if to say "and that is how you win a big game...thank you, you've been a great audience". And then trotted off the field.

I've never wished harder for a baseball bat in my whole life.

And the thing that made THAT worse, was that I just knew that 99% of the casual NT fans sitting around me in the stands had no clue that Pederson was a NFL quality QB. And that Cisco Richard was pretty close himself to being a NFL WR. All they knew is that North Texas (once again) blew a chance to beat a no-name school from Louisiana.

Still my favorite North Texas unis...and yes "EAGLES" is printed on the front...and yes, we had the nickname of "Mean Green" back then too.

(probably should have left the last part out in fear of a thread derailment.)

I've never heard any reference to the Eagles of North Texas. I wish we would embrace the "Eagles" a little more.

I was at that K St. game. If I remember correctly, going into the game we were ranked #1 or #2 in 1AA. Big expectations for our team that year.

We sat in the student section and The K St crowd did not extend the olive branch to us. It was pretty rough where we were. One thing that shocked me was the police had spotters in the press box across the stadium, when they saw someone drinking they would call it down to officers on the field who would come up and escort the drunken undergrads away. Their students were not as skilled as we were in the arts of booze smuggling.

But I must say that it was the most fun I have ever had at loss. The students were going Ape S. Aggieville was bananas all night. Chunks of the goalpost would wander into a bar and the place would erupt.

I was on I-30 somewhere around Sulphur Springs as that game ended. I believe they broke the nations longest losing streak that day by defeating us. We palyed SMU later that year at Ownby and the smut students chanted "Kansas St., Kansas St" at our bench throughout the game. (we lost). Both of those loses were hard to take because in the few years preceding 1989 we had defeated TCU, Texas Tech, Rice and had actually beaten Texas the year before. Of course, we know what happened there.
