NT Daily Razzes Dickey's Uniform Stunt

Best line: Nothing looks better on a university than its football team rejecting school colors.

It's been a Darrell Dickey month. It seems the head coach of the 2001 to 2004 Sun Belt conference champs will not go down quietly. And for once this semester the Daily Editoral Board and the Student Government Association agree on one thing.

SGA members met Nov. 15 to discuss a most pressing issue, to legislate the SGA's reaction to Mean Green football head coach Darrell Dickey's termination. Of course, just like the SGA, the bill is mostly ceremonial.

This is something we at the Daily call student service fees at work. The actual student body, of course, is divided on the issue, but that's not really a concern for the SGA as long as they have a say on the issue.

In a $5,000 advertisement in the Denton Record-Chronicle, Jim "Matress Mac" McIngvale scared administrators into renaming a practice field after Dickey. He told NT administrators he would request the $1 million he donated for the field to go to the One O'Clock Lab Band if they do not carry out his wish.

But what really is the icing on the Darrell Dickey month celebration cake, was the Mean green football team's stunt in its match against Florida Atlantic Nov. 18, the football team debuted its new uniform, which the team wore for the first and last time.

Nothing looks better on a university than its football team rejecting school colors.

Instead of playing harder at every game and maybe even winning the remaining ones, they opted to just mock the school they play for. A goal that was easier to accomplish.

They embarrassed the school, something the football team should leave to experts like us.

I wish this wouldn't use the term "they", but rather "he" because it sounds like the SGA and Daily are at odds with the players, and they shouldn't be. It wasn't the players fault. But as can be expected, DD gets what he's always wanted: The university publicly speaking out/against his players. The..."See guys...I told you so" certainly has been the message throughout the locker room the past 21 days.

Man Law(Mean Green Style) #1081

"Never allow a disgruntled employee who has been recently fired to remain on the premises for more than the time it takes to pack a box or two of personal belongings and walk to the car(For DD, add enough time required to avoid stepping on cracks and picking up any loose penney's along the way)."

"Thus, end of the lesson."

Did anyone realize that JL Smith was a lame-duck since the middle of the season at Mich. state? Did he act like an ass to the school? did the UNC coach or other coaches hired in the middle of the season. I feel horrible for the players because DD has drug them thru the mud while he gets back at the University.

Dickey could also look to Larry Coker, after he was fired at Miami. He was real classy, calling for unity in the program including especially asking for the support of former players. You know inside Coach Coker was hurting, just as anyone would when they lose their job. I wish Dickey had put in as much energy in recruiting and playcalling as his has at his mudslinging game over the past few weeks!

I don't think this firing was ever going to be a clean break.

Firing Dickey was like breaking up with a crazy girlfriend. Like, you always knew when the time came it was going to be messy, you just never know to what extent they are going to go to prove their point. And they'll tell you all the reasons in the world why you should hang on, but in the end, you know deep down inside its the right thing to do- no matter how many good times you might have had along the way.

---When a person is released from a job especially a situation where they will be replaced... it should be done and they pack up and leave almost immediately before they can cause damage. It is entirely different from a situation when a job or program comes to an end. It should have not been announced until the end or at least the final week of the season. Don't give the employee time to do "things" that could be harmful. Doesn't our business school teach that?

I never weighed in on this point you make....but this was my first question when all of the controversy broke loose. Typically, if a person is fired, he is gone, and there is no opportunity to sabotage any technical infrastructure, any business programs, or to generate any negative publicity internal or external against the company. This was a huge oversight IMO that could have prevented much of this. I can only assume there was still some settlement issues that were undecided, and the thought was that not pulling the plug would allow for more favorable negotiations.. My other question was, if this was indeed a premeditated effort on the part of DD to discredit the image of the University, and could in fact be proved through investigative efforts,.....why would the School not fight the payment of the agreed settlement under such a clause that I would hope has to be in his contract?????

Darrell Dickey has $524,000 reasons not to dishonor the university with a cheap stunt on his way out the door. He also has his next coaching gig to worry about, his honor, and his commitment to his athletes. The idea that he had to be escorted out the door by security with a cardboard box of his belongings -- or he'd cause trouble -- is unfathomable to me. How many times does a departing college football coach cause problems? Most of them are like Larry Coker and Ron Zook. If they agree to finish out the year, they do so with pride and dignity.

Just a FYI, people get fired and stay on at their jobs all the time, most common when a company is downsizing, moving or is bought out. Severance packages are made and in many cases the employee may stay on for more than a year, they have terms such as non-disclosure agreement and non-slander clauses.

Dickey was just classless! mad.gifmad.gifmad.gifph34r.gif

I totally agree with FFR. Anyone fired should pack and go right then and there. It doesn't make ANY difference if you get serious jack from the school or not. Besides, Dickey could have pulled a "John Machovic" (UT) and stayed at the school, let them "reassign" him, and get paid in full. After all, he had a contract and could have done so....not that it wouldn't hurt him if he wanted a coaching job in the future.....Now THAT would be spite, people.

Anyway...the point is: You get fired, there are emotions involved and people are flawed to begin with. Bad mix.

I was going to post something like this. I assume Dickey is going to try looking for another coaching position somewhere else, so why the hell would he make an ass out of himself and burn his bridges here. No way I would hire him even as an assistant coach at a DII program after the stunts he's pulled here.

And what does he have to be mad about? He just got a half million dollar buy out. If I was doing a lousy job at work and was given 500k to leave I wouldn't be bitter.
