What happens to us and the rest of the schools in NIL?

So, the NCAA is now pushing this new sub-division, determined by $$ to players.

What happens when a school like say JMU has a billionaire alum that wants to finance his school’s entry into this upper division?  Do they join Alabama and Michigan just because they have $$?  (I call this the Smut  scenario).

You'd have to assume that they'd have to put some form of protection against bad programs with rich donors. Imagine if Harvard donors decided they wanted to launch them into the big leagues. Not sure that would/should be allowed

Here's a couple of interesting discussions on the proposed new football sub-classification.

An explanation of possible repercussions for collegiate sports is in the second video.

This may be the eventuality that we need to start preparing for long term. Not bad, not good, but possibly inevitable.

TCU made $3billion from the CFP appearance? UF made $billions off of Tebow?  These psuedo millenials are out of touch with reality.  TCU total annual revenues are not even $1billion, how would they have magically earned $3billion by appearing in the playoffs.

It is kind of funny to see fans of 2nd tier P5 schools suddenly realize they are about to get left behind along with the rest of us peons.

Exactly! Second tier P5s won’t have a chance against the big boys of college football and their unlimited resources. They won’t be able to buy championships, so it’ll just be a matter of time for them to start griping also.

I keep telling the naive casual college football fan that it won’t be a mini-NFL.  Because the larger programs will not be sharing the majority of their income with the rest of the league with no draft.  Think about it this way (setting aside your fandom for the Dallas Cowboys) if Jerry could buy any players from college more than half of the NFL would be perpetually uncompetitive.

I don’t think there are more than 40 schools that can afford the new model.  Then out of that 40 maybe 8 can sustain success long term.

Honestly, nothing really changes. There will be no significant change. We will continue to be an unofficial “subdivision” of D1 just like we have been. I saw a stat this morning that showed that only 18 universities have played for the National Championship in the BCS/CFP eras. 18 of 133 “FBS” programs.

And those 18 want to make sure it stays that way!  Make no mistake about it, they will do whatever they can to ensure that the barriers to entry remain high and they secure their positions for the foreseeable future.

Do you think this would change if we had a mega billion donor supporting North Texas just like Boone Pickens did for Oklahoma St?

Well, having a mega-billion donor isn't going to make a difference for Oklahoma State as they are going to be on the outside looking in like the rest of us, so who knows if having one would make a difference for us.

In the history of college football (going back to the leather helmet days), a total of 44 schools can claim at least one national championship (14 can claim exactly one).  Since 1869, 30 universities have won more than 1 national championship.  Many years had multiple champions so I just counted one for each school in that year.

My issue with this is that those currently in power have decided that based on recent history, the future of college football in terms of the haves and have nots should be set in stone with no real opportunity for material change.  Why snap the chalk line now?  If it was snapped at a different point in the history of college football, it would still be dominated today by Yale (18), Princeton (15) and Harvard (8).  The point is, things change, but only if they are allowed to change.

Florida State agrees this happens...
