  1. A thankyou from MGSF and Sean-Thomas Faulker #25.

  2. I always paid mandatory fees for a lot of things I never used - Rec center, the armadillo performance hall, pickup basketball courts, health center, etc etc. It's all a part of the larger education system. This is not a trade school or budget airline. You cannot a la carte you educational journey.

  3. We have the worst branding in D1 - yes, I'm including all of D1.

  4. Not strictly NIL related, but watching some of the Women's College World Series I started thinking about the college experience of the modern student-athlete and how it is so much different than it was in the past - even 10 years ago let alone 20 or 30. During the games, the announcers would spend time introducing or highlighting individual players and it seemed like most of them (if they were not freshman) were on their third university. Bouncing around not following an education but a softball (or other sports) "career." Do they ever feel a sense of place or belonging related to the university or is it just to their teammates? I get the, "I earned my degree and want to attend grad school and have a year of eligibility left" thing (sort of), but I doubt the decision on where to attend grad school is driven in any way by academics. I guess I'm a traditionalist. For me, going away to attend college (the same one) for four years was a great experience and can't really grasp how different that would have been if I was on a different campus every year.

  6. Timeless debate. These schools are using athletics heavily to promote their brand. Don't want to support athletics? You have options: a different school.

  7. Without support from student fees, D1 athletics at UNT would promptly come to an end. I imagine it would also lead to foreclosure of Apogee Stadium.

  8. I don't think I've ever talked to anyone who just flat out doesn't want Baseball. There are a lot of people who disagree about the timing of when Baseball should be added though. Some of us just think we have some things we need to do for our current sports before we start serious conversations about adding Baseball.

  11. But the fact is none of the young people that care about being engaged socially want to go there. Take UTA for instance. That school used to have a vibrant campus and greek system etc. It has become a suitcase college with no visible identity. UNT has done a good job of making it more of a college experience and the growth of Denton has been good as well. You really can stay in Denton over the weekends now unlike a few years ago when you had to head to Dallas to have fun.

  13. Really wish we had the same excitement of looking forward to a new season with a new head coach energizing the fanbase.

  14. Well we’re really behind the 8 ball here with these 2. I saw that interview with Joey on channel 11 and it made me crave an energy coach with skill. He’s firing up all of Tech. San Antonio will continue to roll under steady leadership. Coach Mumbles has one of plumbest jobs in one of the greatest States in the World. Someone waiting in the wings knows this if he doesn’t deliver. Rooting for Seth and our Green. Revealing season ‘22. GMG

  16. On the surface this seems to be a enormous benefit for the "non super stars." While they may not be getting the big bucks, this could start them on a successful life course. Even if the NIL doesn't last, this type of program should stay and lend success for years to come.

  17. I'm sure Wren will address this, but I imagine the official position will be to continue giving to the MGSF.

  20. Do students still get free tickets to athletic events? Didn't the student body vote for these fees?
    2 points
  21. This is the correct answer. UTA or UTD are both great schools, academically. And they are cheaper. If that matters to you, they are there for your admission. But UNT is a whole different animal when it comes to athletics. 98% don't care or actively loathe its existence. I never, ever believe that the athletics fee we get here is set in stone. But I sure hope it is. I'll never understand how college football in Texas can matter so much more than it does here. At the worst, we SHOULD be comparable to Texas Tech or UH just because of our size and history. Instead, we compare to UTSA and Texas State...that i-aa decision was just so awful that it didn't just give our own alumni someone else to follow and care about, it gave the students here over the years someone else to follow for decades.

  22. I understand the sentiment and feel that the college athletics landscape will change, but there are more student-athletes (or athlete-students) that will see very little or nothing at all from NIL than those that make headlines. When you choose to attend a university with such fees you are accepting them as a condition of attending, so they are really only "mandatory" in the same way that tuition is mandatory. If someone doesn't want that type of college experience or expense, there are hundreds of other options (on-line, etc.).

  23. I think college sports have been ruined just like so many other American traditions. The NIL is just one reason I won’t be contributing any longer to the MGSF When I fill up at the gas pump I am so thankful I did not renew our season tickets. When I think of what certain individuals are making for their dismal performance and without any accountability as well it made it very easy, painless to walk away after 50+ years.

  25. Just to play devil's advocate to some of your points. In my opinion Johnny Jones recruited better than Grant has and we were in a lesser conference. Also, the defensive first strategy is a deterrent in my opinion too, but Texas Tech has been able to recruit at the top of their conference with the same style as us. I think we can do better than this and I think Grant thinks so too, just look at the players he sends offers too the last few seasons. Players he thinks will fit his system and are graded higher than the players that have committed chose other schools, some of those schools are better and some aren't. And I'm not talking about the pie in the sky 4 stars either.

  26. I guess the NCAA rather completely ruin sports than oppose the current interpretation of the courts rulings. Make it against the rules punishable by immediately ineligibility for accepting any NIL funds and fight it out in the courts.

  27. You know, if the kids cnn make this much money, do they really need scholarships anymore. They most certainly do not need to ask me to donate to the scholarship fund anymore. I can use that money for more important purposes now. Before, I felt I was helping a kid get an education in return for a good, solid effort in whatever sport. They don’t need me or my money anymore. I think 🤔 will keep my money and use it for vacations instead.

  29. Are you happy with it? Did you expect it to be better by now? Let me clarify a little. Grant is a excellent coach and has taken mainly JC players, a few good HS recruits and won us some CUSA Championships, CBI Title, hosted and won a NIT game and won NCAA tournament game, but with that kind of success over 4-5 years I thought he would be getting a better class of recruits/transfers. Don't get me wrong, Javon, Simmons, Abou, Bell, Rubin, Perry, etc.... are good CUSA players but were moving up a class next year and so should our recruiting. Grant can coach them up better than they come in, but now I think instead of getting good CUSA level players we should be getting multiple first team all CUSA players and UFAs.

  31. meh.. Expect UTSA fans to be wondering if they overpaid this year... UTSA has a strong likelihood of starting out 0-3. I think when we roll into San Antonio, they'll be sitting at 3-4. They'll be 6-6 this year give or take a game.

  34. You lost me. Blacks/grays are not ridiculous when you're talking about possibilities in the corporate world. If I'm AD, I'm leaving wiggle room for that. Not orange, not blue, but grays and blacks are reasonable. Now, if you're just talking about what the athletic teams wear during competition, yes! Strictly green/white.

  35. I’m very excited about the Martinez and Eady signings. Martinez has been an all-conference player and is an excellent three point shooter. He will garner much more attention on the outside than Bell and that should open up Abou. Eady is a great defensive player with good size for a guard at 6’5” and also an excellent three point shooter. Sissoko should be a good backup for Abou ensuring that we can have a big in at all-times if we want. Interested to see who we get with the last scholarship. Hoping for a guard that can drive and finish.

  36. I agree with this sentiment in general but it's difficult to gage with inconsistent recruiting services setting the bar for what a recruit is. The important thing to me would be is coach winning the recruiting battles he wants to win? Is he identifying the guys he wants and getting them more often than not? Tough to evaluate with basketball because there just isn't much recruiting info out there for us little guys until a player commits or signs. IMO the issue with football has often been being relegated to picking up what's left. With the continued success we've seen in basketball, I'd imagine McCasland is doing just fine in getting what he wants. That said, it would be nice to see a 4 star commit.

  37. I had a strong sense he was pulling our legs but I wanted so badly to believe. Like Santa Clause and the Easter bunny were real again. I even thought to myself "just maybe" because his dad went to Memphis when they were in CUSA so the connection is there! Come home, DJ!

  38. The question is, or should be, general to any coach, at any school, in any sport, at any level. Take Grant McCasland and North Texas out of the equation for the moment; as not to confuse anyone who may think the topic is a criticism. If a school or professional franchise advances annually in record and title(s), is it reasonable to expect greater interest from “perceived” higher caliber players; to your program/franchise? Again, not a knock at all on past recruiting or draft history of the guys you built your team around to win. Your program should be more attractive to those recruit(s) / free agent/ pretty girl that wouldn’t date you previously.

  40. @ADLER There's gotta be some wiggle room for the fan that wants to support their Mean Green, but is in some setting (corporate? work?) that has some dress/uniform restrictions. Like, if i'm in an office that says "grey/black polos only", maybe I'd appreciate the grey option to support my favorite UNT golf team.

  41. You don't think 3 straight seasons of CUSA and CBI titles, plus an NCAA win over Purdue, plus an official AAC membership, would inspire some level of recruiting upgrade? You think we hit our ceiling before all of this, because of perceptions of CUSA/UNT? I don't think anyone is calling for 4*, but concerns are warranted when we have continued to struggle to establish anything beyond a 6-7 man rotation to compete in CUSA.

  42. The three year timeframe to get a degree is becoming more and more common. Mostly due to students getting college credits in High School. That said, if I had it to do all over again I would have taken 6 years to graduate! 😀

  43. I guess this is being interpreted as a negative, but it’s not meant that way. The post was intended as informative as I figured there are some (maybe many) who don’t realize how many hours of college credits a kid can have before ever graduating from high school. I know of a few kids who graduated high school and junior college the same semester…and I’m not exactly in the loop, so there have to be many others. There have been at least two students who were hired as teachers at a local school two years after they graduated high school.

  44. I don't necessarily think it was just sharing a conference with UNT. Some of the other additions (Rice, Charlotte, et al) were real headscratchers. There was no need to add six when losing three. It was shortsighted and irrational by Aresco.

  45. Nice promotion. If this season is like the past handful we should put 911 on our helmets.

  46. The worst experience walking into the Pit is when we’re coming off of a great season and good March crowds, and I walk in to a November game and it’s like nothing has changed from the Benford era and we’re back to square 1. Would sure be great if people took some pride and showed up to those non conference games because they want to watch UNT regardless of the opponent.
