Most of the people upset about this who are calling it an overreaction probably won’t change their minds until it hits close enough to home for them. Or until it has reached high enough confirmed infection/death numbers to where they can’t keep posting the same meme comparing COVID-19 numbers to flu numbers. Hopefully by taking precautions like this these people can still look back in a few months and think they were right about calling these actions overreactionary. But in reality these measures may be the reason we can prevent it from getting to the point it is in over in Italy.

So, UNT Marketing should take this opportunity to tout how we were an "all-time" Cinderella story and we can declare the Mean Green the 2020 NCAA champions!!

Meh, it’s a bit of both. Both extremes are silly. COVID-19 is much more lethal than the usual seasonal flu, but the ‘cancel everything so it looks like are are doing something’ is also silly. It looks like you mostly catch this disease from breathing, unless you’re planning on stopping that you are kind of hosed. We really can’t shut down everything everywhere for months or years until a vaccine is tested and ready. COVID-19 will likely get worse in terms of death totals. It’s scary because it’s so new, but it’s possible that this could end up killing less people than other causes of death this year. Much as in a wilderness survival situation panic kills more than the elements, even if the elements claim their share. Obviously if you are personally affected it feels worse, much like a highway fatality is worse if you know the dead than it is for those just stuck in traffic. Don't freak out and fight over TP, stay away from others as much as practical if you’re ill and stay away from both extremes (sky is falling and nothing is happening).

This isn't an overreaction at all. I thought it was at first as well but I work at a hospital and have been in many meetings with Infection Control experts this week and this airborne virus spreads very quickly and is much stronger than the flu and will not go away when it gets warmer. I cannot stress enough if you have elderly relatives that have underlying conditions please be vigilant in who they come in contact with. Europe's healthcare system is rapidly collapsing because they were not vigilant enough.

I sure do. My brother has diabetes and is a chef, which means exposed to everyone that visits his restaurant. I guess we should lock him up. Know anyone with a severely weakened immune system? Maybe super fan Steven Pettit? That’s right he gets locked up to so that everyone isn’t inconvenienced. In addition to the risk of death, a pandemic can overload the health care system. We simply don’t have the ICU capacity for a massive outbreak. But you are young and healthy, so why worry? Two reasons. First everyone is a possible vector for the virus. Many healthy people barely show symptoms but can still transmit the disease to vulnerable populations. You know who is least likely to stay home sick? Hourly workers without sick leave or a proper health insurance plan. People that work in places where lots of other people gather: stadiums, malls, restaurants, etc. Second, what if you don’t get the virus but you are in a life threatening accident or come down with some other disease that requires critical care? Well ask how that is playing out in northern Italy. We aren’t testing for this currently, at least not at the rates we need to be. So we just don’t know the extend this has hit us and makes it impossible to predict where it is headed. Look I get the unhappiness of losing access to tournament games or immediate financial losses over canceled trips. And I have no idea how universities will deal with displaced students if they close. This whole ordeal is going to be a huge burden on the economy and many individuals. But for Christ’s sake, pandemic is not a word that is used casually.

Mortality outside of China has shown to be fairly consistent so far. I wouldn’t bet against China obfuscating the truth, but genetic studies of the virus suggest this version is a natural mutation that occurred in October or November last year. China being a lying authoritarian regime probably didn’t help, but this disease appears to be pretty infectious so it’s also likely that wouldn’t have mattered much anyway. I highly recommend listening to the Joe Rogan podcast with Michael Osterholm.

Yes proximity to an infectious person and breathing in the virus can make you catch it. Having sporting events with no or very limited spectators is a reasonable precaution. This is mostly transmitted through breathing it in, not as much from touching your face. Agreed on authorities (here and abroad) trying to strike the right balance in messaging to prepare people without causing a panic. Not an easy balance to achieve of course and once panic starts it’s probably more infectious than COVID-19.

The media control over this country is impressive. Our PR agency just gave us some advice that may put us out of business without even hinting that it could negatively affect the trajectory of the business. I may reach out and let them know we'll start paying them a percentage of sales once we implement their advice.

The reason you shut down public events is to change the behavior of the general population because public health authorities understand that people will not change their own behavior. People looking to find a sports bar to watch the games is direct evidence of that. Because again, hourly employees without sick leave or health care (ie. waiters, bartenders, and busboys that do not pay rent if they don't work) are not staying home if they get sick. According to the U.S. census site, 16% percent of the U.S. population is over 65. If we add the other vulnerable groups, I would hazard a guess to say we are looking at over 20% easily of our population that are at risk of serious illness or death. Our health care system cannot handle that. People are going to have to change their behaviors and endure some hardships in order to prevent a disaster in their country (not just in the United States - the entire country of Italy is on lockdown and China quarantined a city of 11 million people to try to stem the tide of this virus). I am going to stop now because it is obvious that some of you are not and will not listen. But I hope all of you are washing your hands well and that all of you and yours remain healthy.

It is actually extremely deadly to the elderly. Maybe ten to fifteen times more so than regular influenza. I just think it'd be easier to quarantine folks over 80 than it would be to shut down the entire country.

Each player deserves an additional year of eligibility. If rosters need to be expanded to do so, then the NCAA needs to make it happen. So many players (ours and beyond) had their seasons cut short by this. I hope they make it right.

Well, congrats to the Men's team for winning the CUSA regular season championship. I am sure that the players are more disappointed then we are. Especially since they were at least guaranteed an NIT bid, if not NCAA.

Injuries plague the women's team for some reason. A short bench is nothing new for the women.

The Swine Flu was also called a Pandemic. And yes, I think all of those people you mentioned should be on lockdown. The vast majority of people who are seriously effected are elderly or have serious medical issues. And those people should be quarantined if possible. I'm not saying this isn't potentially a crisis (I've been concerned for about 6 weeks when I did some math and came up with 1.8 million dead Americans based on the lethality reports at the time). But by far the people most effected are the old and/or compromised. And yes, they should be careful (my brother has diabetes...and I stand by my statement...he needs to be careful....but I know he is a clean freak so I'm not too concerned). But this isn't something like the Spanish Flu that killed the young and healthy and seemed like the hand of God wiping out a generation. On a better note, my friends and I have a theory. When we are live at games, we always lose. Example: Last month I drove to Houston to watch us play a not good Rice. We of course lost. We didn't go, nor watch, we win conference. Same goes for Football and Soccer. Only exception in years, HOD Bowl win.

I have plans to go to Hawai'i in early June. Nothing will stop me. If I die in Hawai'i, at least I'll die happy.

Well, they could and should have won this one; but this season is mercifully over. Return everyone but George, with a bunch of red shirts eligible next year. Next year is time for Mitchell to make a positive statement. George was a great player for the Green in the last two years, too bad she didn't have much of a supporting cast. There was definitely a hole in recruiting for a couple of years.
