  1. We can talk about poor recruiting and needing a new DC but lets not forget what a great season we had. Conference West Title and another bowl berth. But I think what could help more than anything in recruiting is being able to say we were not only the top G5 in Texas but also better records than any G5 from Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. North Texas 9-5 Houston 7-5 SMU 7-6 Louisiana Tech 7-6 Arkansas State 7-5 NMSU 6-6 UTSA 6-5 Louisiana Lafayette 5-7 Tulane 5-7 Louisiana Monroe 4-8 New Mexico 3-9 Texas State 2-10 Tulsa 2-10 RIce 1-11 UTEP 0-12

  5. I really do think there should be a cutback in some of these bowl games (though I personally want the HOD Bowl to be one that survives). Maybe subtract one bowl a year for five or six years and see where that leaves things.

  11. UNT had a very tough road schedule and could had won against Oklahoma, UTA, and Georgetown. These are road games that I think we will be able to pull out in our weaker C-USA schedule. Was not holding my breath to win a single road game before the season but here we are with a winning record before conference play. I think Benford only did that in 2013. In two months we have to grade considering all of the circumstances, especially playing with a mostly new team, I give Mac 2.0 a solid A.

  12. I have to say that this is far and away Bakers best hire in the three major sports at North Texas. He has the most lifetime wins in the three major sports of any hire that Baker has made here, therefore he must be the best hire.

  13. UH pissed off Naaman Forest High in Garland, local as in DFW. Don't really understand the infatuation with Tune. Things slow on My Little Pony Fans website? Don't be scared of change at the big public school in your backyard. It won't change what is coming.

  14. Supporting your school and lying to yourself are not synonymous with one another. This was a decent year in college football standards. This was a "historic" year for UNT football standards. That's where the problem lies. We see ourself as 1 thing whereas everyone else sees us with reality taken into perspective.

  19. I believe this is the book where he talks about resenting having to get involved in petty disputes between some coaches over locker space. Because he claimed that he had just raised 26 million to help build the Super Pit and he had better things to do than settle petty arguments. Well, I love what Hayden Fry did (and tried to do) for this school, but he had nothing to do with the funding for the Super Pit. Hayden Fry used to play very fast and loose with the truth. The concerns (lies) about academics at North Texas go back to when we achieved University status (1961), and filed a bill to change our name to THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS. A very ugly chapter in North Texas history. You can read about it in the book The Story of North Texas, by Dr. James Rogers.

  20. C+, which can be upgraded (or downgraded) with more games. 7-6 currently on the year. Won all expected games (Eureka College, Bethune Cookman, Rogers State, Grambling State, Indiana State and McNeese State). I had San Diego as a toss up from what I knew of them. Lost all expected games (Nebraska, Georgia Tech, OU, UTA, Georgetown) Lost to a below .500 UTRGV team at home (which I projected as a Win) Unlike many, I refuse to give McClasland extra credit because Tony Benford was bad and he doesn't appear to be. Instead, my expectation is to see similar results enjoyed at Arkansas State in his lone season there. Still early I really like the addition of Roosevelt Smart and Duffy. Gibson will contribute in the future. Don't like what I have seen in bringing in Arikawe and Michael Miller as Juco guys. Juco's should be impact guys or major contributors. The Russian's situation was somewhat of a gamble and hasn't paid off this year. Not sure why we have a transfer (J. Simmons) using up a valuable scholarship this year to play next year. (Looked like a modest contributor while at ArkSt) Inherited a nice PG in Woolridge, Lawson and a nice prospect in Zach Simmons. Lawson played better last year but Shane Temara is playing much better. Maybe its just the adjustment to a new system at this point. I think we missed a golden opportunity to add to the mix with 7 scholarships for this team and not getting production out of 4 of them (for various reasons). Coaching is better but recruiting is equally important. I'm sure he will end up being a good hire. Just depends on what we look like 3-5 years down the road. I was a student during 3 consecutive 20+ seasons under Bill Blakely; with the top talent the state had to offer and having the best program in Texas. Attendance was at an all-time high and the Pit was electric. It's on my bucket list to see those times again. Hopefully this coach can help move the needle.

  23. Credit does go to Littrell and bringing in any QB capable to play his system should be credited to Littrell. However, he is or very well should be held responsible and entirely responsible for both sides of the ball. He is the HC after all.

  31. It all comes down to whether or not you think Reffet has lost his ability to coordinate a defense or was this more a matter of personnel? If you think he should have done better with the players he had AND you think you can find someone better, then you make a change. If not, then you lay it out for him and provide clear direction where you expect to see improvement along with how he will be measured. It's basic management skills. Littrell needs to step up and show that he can effectively manage all three aspects of the game and not just offense.

  32. Not concerned about what other teams did or didn't do, I'm concerned about UNT. No one, at least I am not asking for any personnel changes on offense. We struggled to score and even maintain drives with even consistency vs the decent defenses. But there is no doubt that side of the ball is making significant strides. Though situational offense and IN game adjustments would be a refreshing change. My concern is defense. In 9 or 10 of our games we allowed team's to either score their season high or have their second highest output of points on the season. And there have been 0 changes on that side of the ball. If we the fans are content with that then I can't say that would be surprising. If he gets another year, that definitely will not be surprising. It would be the status quo for UNT.

  39. "So those that need to make ends meet will have to make some cuts. And those cuts will probably come from programs that aren’t revenue drivers like football and men’s basketball. We’ll be passed out in the floor from shock if coach salaries decrease accordingly to help schools pay the new tax. Instead, we’re bracing for future stories about athletic department cuts to other sports, especially at schools without large donor and alumni bases." https://www.yahoo.com/sports/new-tax-law-will-cost-college-athletic-departments-lots-money-185631171.html

  41. We have been sitting and ******** about recruiting for the past few coaches. Denton is a hard sale versus other programs. FAU has leftovers from FSU and UF. Texas leftovers? They go to other states. Why stay here when you could go make your name for a top tier program in another state if the top tier of Texas doesn't want you? Not that I agree, but I see the mindset of the potential Texas recruits that don't get picked up by the big Texas schools. What that means is we need coaches that can DEVELOP players that want to develop into top tier talent. So far, with what we've seen from Fine and the receiving core, these coaches can develop players. It will not be an overnight change and it also could be a point of regression if the coaches can't push more from their younger players every year like they did this year(on offense, we regressed defensively). Most agree that we have had historical issues recruiting. Don't fault SL and his staff in their SECOND DADGUM YEAR. Give them a chance to turn the corner. Even if they can't turn the corner in recruiting, give them a chance to develop the talent they get. This school is a tough sale, even with all the improvements. Fact of the matter is our school hasn't afforded the athletic department more than the leftovers of the budget for more than a decade and we have a lot of catching up to do. Our players still use ice baths. A lot of the P5 programs have those dadgum cryo chamber things now. I'm not dissing the ice bath, nor suggesting it as an investment (because we could put the money to better use), but how the **** do you compete with cryo chambers in a recruiting pitch?

  42. I see recruiting as going in the right direction. I think we need to get rid a Scott Conley. I am sure he is a nice guy, but damn the guy graduated college in the 70s. Nothing wrong with when you graduated, but that tells me at his age he probably has very little understanding of kids today to be in charge of High School relations. Hell I am almost 20 years younger than him and I don't have much understanding of kids in high school today.

  43. Great list, Cooley. My NT watching experience extends back to the NCAA team of '87-'88, but I will take your word on those who were there before me. I was a bit surprised to see that Deon Hunter didn't even receive any "votes", despite your otherwise high opinion of him. I thought he'd be at least worthy of an Honorable Mention. Ronnie "Ro Mo" Morgan, Tony Worrell, Jesse Ratliff, Chris Davis and Deon Hunter were probably the best "five" that I saw during my years at the Super Pit.

  44. Hey this is fun, Cooley. Yes drinking does help. My critique of your selections. Agree with you that Weasel was as fast as any player I've seem. However he also tended to be out of control a lot of time. Definitely led the nation in balls thrown into the stands. Ken Williams was a good player but was not an offensive threat and his rebound totals benefited from Blakeley run and gun style. I enjoyed Blakeley type of play but he inherited the nucleous of his successful early teams and never was able to come close to recruiting that kind of talent level. The Gene Robbins recruits for the year he was fired included. 3 all state players based on a 5 man selection not the masses that are currently named to all state teams. Melvin Davis and Fred Mitchell were first team all state and Kenneth Williams a second team slection. Add to that JC All American Terry Bailey and standout transfer Carl Jones. Bobby Iverson actually left after his junior year are he would have been available for Blakeley first team. Blakeley early teams also played a very easy schedule and this hurt them in the ratings despite having 20 win seasons. IMHO Blakeley teams could not have competed with Dan Spika's Missouri Valley teams. Donnel Hayden IMHO was not a true point guard and actually hurt the team by taking almost every shoot. Agree McMilliam was a greap leaper but I wish you could have seen Leroy Winfield who jumped center at 6'2. Sorry for the rambling but I enjoy the exhange.

  45. My mom wrote for the Daily in those days(mid to late 70's). I believe she told me that that game was a sellout as well. If not, it musta been damn close. As far as the SMU game, wasn't that one on January 22nd 1977? Or did we host the Mustangs two years in a row? I only ask because my mom was at that game, and had to leave at the half, because she went into labor with my brother.

  46. What about our game against DePaul with Mark Aguirre in the late 70's/early 80's. I was there and that was definitely a sellout.

  47. I started this list from the 1975-76 season. (My junior year) Joe Hamilton would have been on my first team. I remember watching him on the local broadcast of UNT games. Bobby Iverson would have also been 1st team. The best I could do for Chris Davis was list him as HM. Guys, we recruited and signed the very best players in the state. Most were recruited nationally as well. Our only sell out was standing room only in 1976 against SMU. (10,500) We also had several crowds in the 7-8 range.
