  1. You know folks, I'd give it a little time before I'd start complaining about what's in the store. The shop is just barely open to the public, UNT has not announced it's new uniforms as yet, Nike is just starting to work on UNT gear, etc., etc. and, to me, it's just a tad early to start the "it's not right" complaining. can we just cool the complaining and give it awhile to develop? PLEASE. Maybe just once, let's give the folks the benefit of the doubt that things will "perk up" a bit for all of us who love UNT gear...what do you say? Look, in a perfect world I'd have the thing chock full of replica UNT Nike jerseys, helmets, coach shirts, t-shirts, polos, baby gear, men's and women's hoodies, etc., etc. This "ain't" a perfect world. I doubt that Nike has it full speed ahead on UNT gear as yet. It will take a bit of time...as it will take a bit of time to work out the traffic flows, the tailgate set-ups, etc. Patience might just be a virtue here, and it will certainly keep one's blood pressure from going through the roof. It's all good...it's new...new is different...new takes some adjusting to and "settling in". And, don't forget...GO MEAN GREEN!

  4. I believe UTEP has said they like being in a conference with other Texas schools for their fanbase, which is probably the best for them since the other Texas schools actually like being associated with them. Of course, it helps that El Paso has no other school or pro team to take away from its support. Utah State is a must for the MWC because they need to keep a foothold for their network in Utah. I still believe that the next spot will go to one of the following: San Jose State, North Texas, or New Mexico State. Those three schools fit the footprint of the league and have some history to sell to the other schools. In all honesty, the winner of the MWC invite in this group probably insures its stay at the current FBS level, at least as FBS is comprised right now. To me, UNT just makes the most sense--from a market standpoint (only school in Texas gets your network lots of TVs available for some viewing), great facilities (finally), and a large enrollment. NMSU and SJSU have major funding issues, enrollment is smaller, and their market is either really small (NMSU) or not any better than UNT's (SJSU). I have said it before and I will say it again. Its gonna take the leadership of another conference (MWC or CUSA) to see the potential here in Denton for us to make this move upward. Our recent FBS history is plain awful and our mens basketball program has gotten much better, but we still have work to do there, as well. But Craig Thompson could look at this all and say that UNT is perfectly situated to now succeed on the field/court and we could get back into Texas in a very favorable situation for the MWC. I still believe that if we got to recruit players to play against Boise State or Fresno State in our new stadium with Coach Mac, our program would soar. I believe the same thing with hoops, too. Getting to recruit players to play in a conference with SDSU, New Mexico, and UNLV would be awesome for Johnny Jones. We have two great coaches, we have two great facilities, and we have a huge enrollment with fairly solid funding. All we need is for someone to look at this and say that we need that school in our league. And because of our past ties to most of those schools, we could very well be the 12th MWC member very soon.

  7. Yep, that $1.00 lottery ticket is just the same as building an estate through a lifetime of hard work. And, sine you don't realize it, many families (some spanning generations) work in these businesses and on these farms for many many years...not just the founding member. Estate tax is simply a big money grab the folks in DC thought they could get away with because they would be taxing those "rich" people again, and you know, everyone who is rich never worked a day in their lives for all that money, never built a business, never employed anyone, never paid any taxes and never risked any of their own capital...they just inherited it or won the lottery. GET REAL. Someone sold you a pile of crap and you bought it! I have a friend whose family had to sell a business the family had owned for over 75 years just to pay the estate tax as all their resources were tied up in the business they started from scratch...and employed over 50 people (not all family members). This scenario is not rare as many small business owners have all their "wealth" (as do many family farms) tied up in their businesses and do not have the required cash to pay the estate tax when due...so, the business and farm goes to get the cash. Nice...this after paying taxes on the money used to build the business and on the earnings the business made all through the years. I really don't know what part of that you see as "fair" when it comes to the estate tax. The estate tax is simply hideous!

  11. WOW...it gets worse every time you post. So, now you think building family wealth, building a family business and creating a family farm, etc. is getting "something for nothing". Just where do you live? On Mars???? Don't think I ever said lottery winners should not be taxed, nor did I ever say people should not pay any taxes. But, to equate working one's entire life building a business, creating family wealth through savings and investments, running a family farm, etc. to winning the lottery is just plain ignorant of the facts of life. One spends a lifetime doing one and wakes up lucky one day in the other. Yep, that's exactly the same...nice analogy. Those in favor of wealth redistribution generally have none to distribute. Those generally in favor of tax increases are for them as long as someone else is the one paying the higher taxes. Simply amazing how that works.

  17. Let's not forget all those that have lied, cheated, commited fraud, hell even murdered to amass that wealth. You have those great American's that have bought companies, let every single employee go and sold the assets for a huge profit. Great indeed. I don't think you have read one single thing I have even typed, hell at this point I am not sure you can even read. I actually agree that farms and working properties should not be taxed and have said that at least a couple of times, yet you still bring it up like I am arguing it with you. Not once have I mentioned a redistribution of wealth, yet you can't seem to get off that point either. Everything in this country is double taxed or more if you really look at it, but you sir are blind. You may be the most naive person in the history of the world to think that all of these rich people are such hard working great americans. Sure some of them are, but every rich person is not a great american, in fact most probably aren't. How about the hundreds of millions of American's that have paid social security tax and medicare tax? Do they not deserve to receive the benefit of the money they have actually paid in for these services? If I have a choice of removing the GW Bush "I am a rich man's best friend" tax cuts, or giving the millions of american's that worked until retirement social security and medicare, I choose the latter without question.

  21. I think your second paragraph might misunderstand his point. I think he is saying everyone who bought the lottery tickets payed tax. I.E. every person who had $100 spent on lottery tickets paid tax on them, their already taxed money makes up the prize pool he wins and he subsequently pays tax on the winnings, making the proceeds double taxed. The fallacy in the arguement is that you could apply the double tax standard to every single transaction in the economy (basically). I pay taxes on my income when I earn it, I go out and spend it, which eventually becomes either a corporate profit or goes on to pay part of someones salary, which in turn is taxed again. I can see both sides to the debate on the estate tax. The only thing the bothers me is the inference that way more people are subject to the tax than really are. I have no problem if a politician is against the estate tax, but at least have an honest discourse about who the tax really effects.

  23. You're right. Let's give tax breaks to the poor. Oh, wait. They don't pay taxes. In fact, they get checks sent to them paid for by taxpayers called the Earned Income Tax Credit (trying to suppress the laughter at the irony of that title). Let's give tax breaks to the middle class, then. Wait... they get the child tax credit, home mortgage interest deduction, and college education credit. The effective tax rate of the middle class is 3.3%. Wow, those sure are a lot of "loopholes." We'll get to those after we eliminated the "loopholes" for the rich and corporate America. What about the lower middle class then? Let's give them a tax break, because they do most of the hard work in this country. It's only fair! Well, their effective tax rate is -0.4%. They basically get all of their taxes back, plus a small bonus. What do rich people pay? The top 1% pay 29.5% in effective federal taxes (that's after they sneak around and use all those "loopholes," a.k.a. Tax Laws). Do you really want the rich to pay their "fair share?" Fair share would imply we are all treated equally, that we all pay an even percentage of our income. Are you willing to dig deep and start paying your fair share????

  25. "You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it." * Adrian Rogers, 1931 *

  26. I am sorry but I do not equate inheritance as building family wealth or a family business or working their entire lives to do so, perhaps their father or grandfather did. In many ways people that inherit do win a lottery, it's sad that you do not see the corelation. I don't think I ever mentioned wealth redistribution as this weath would not be redistributed it would go to our failing government. You do realize that 99.99% of people that inherit huge estates have done absolutely nothing their entire lives right?

  27. it is definitely a spending problem. Obama has double-downed Bush, what happened to his pledge to cut the debt in half in his first term? Oh yeah forgot he is a light weight who only know community organizing and not private business. Obama has added 40% to the debt since he came in and now wants to raise taxes which will further kill the economy. You want to blame Bush for TARP but Obama voted for it, Obama then chuckles about spending $1 trillion stimulus bill that was not quite "shovel-ready," actually only 6% was for infrastructure and what not, the rest went as political payoffs to his friends and donors. How about Obama starts getting rid of many of his new found 6 figure employees and start cutting down many of the departments that he has allowed to explode in size (i.e. DHS and EPA). Stop spending and pass a balanced budget amendment. Cut unemployment compensation from the ridiculous 2 years that encourages sloth and government dependence. Follow Clinton's lead and place a cap on welfare and eliminate the abuse. Finally please someone in Houston please get the crackheads to come to their senses and get Sheila Lee Jackson out of office.

  32. A debt ceiling is to prevent an organization from exceeding the amount of debt they can reasonably service while maintaning competent levels of service. I work in municipal finance, and at my city this expressed as a percent of our tax collections. We have a maximum percentage of property taxes that can go towards debt service while the remainder goes towards maintanence and operations. The federal government seems like they just do whatever they want to, and lets not forget, big business runs this country now as they are the ones contributing the all of these politicians campaigns. There is a reason why the richest 1% of the country gets the most favorable tax breaks, his name was George Bush.

This new staff's ability to spot difference makers in 2 and lower 3 stars will be how we get out of the SBC cellar and build depth. A quick look at the past few recruiting classes and it is amazing just how many of our highly rated recruits never panned out.

  39. Per the constitution, the State MUST balance the budget yearly - there is no debt. ...the "debt" is a result of losses ON PAPER underwriting state-wide and municipal bonds. ...and here is the most important point made in the article "Texas doesn't appear to be overextended. In a May report, Standard & Poor's gave the state an AA+ rating, citing its outperforming economy, strong cash management and constitutional limits on debt." ...so really, it appears the article was written so they could have a nice sensational headline, but really doesn't deliver the shock he headline would lead you to expect to find within. Perry isn't even running yet, and here come the hit-pieces. LOL!

  40. I think this program has reached a point where we have earned some respect around the southwest. I don't really think we need the measuring stick road games, and I don't think we need an OOC schedule loaded with home games against the SWAC and Southland. Jones has proven his teams can go toe to toe with most of the better teams and win at the Super Pit. Every season we should be playing those schools (OK St., T.Tech, LSU, Houston, TCU, SMU, UTEP, Baylor, New Mexico, Tulsa, Tulane, and Southern Miss)(home and home series), maybe 2 SWAC or Southland (home only), and then maybe one big boy (home and home series). If Texas, or any other regional power won't do it, that's fine. Maybe we will play them in the NCAA Tournament. I think this is the kind of scheduling that will advance our program to a higher level, and improve attendance.

  41. I understand the need for money, but if we played teams like Tech at home more often, instead of teams from the SWAC and Southland, we'd have better attendance, and might not need to play these money games. The Tech game last year was great. Name opponent, big crowd, lots of energy, and a win; this is what the public wants. A bunch of home games against a bunch of SWAC teams, only produces a bunch of home wins with low attendance, lower RPI, and a money road game that usually ends in a loss. I'd rather play an equal amount of home and road games, against teams that will play in Denton, that the public will show up to see, and result in better RPI numbers. Lets keep scheduling Tech, OK State, LSU, and add some C-USA schools, like SMU, Tulsa, Tulane, Houston, UTEP, Southern Miss, and UAB. I know fans like you and me, will go see UNT play, but unfortunately, I feel the general public needs more incentive to show up.

  43. and Bush said he was a conservative....before he doubled the national debt (which mean overspending the previous 42 Presidents COMBINED) and never balanced one of his eight budgets. This is nothing compare to that statement.... well that... and knowing where those WMD were and that we were in danger from an attack from Iraq. The Bush administration has the economy screwed up much worse that thought... his 5000 DOW drop was just the beginning but at least that has stabilized somewhat. ...those of us who lost a lot because of him are somewhat bitter. You just can't tax less and spend more and expect good things to happen. Hope the super wealthy enjoyed those tax cuts... most have lost a lot more in the Dow drop that they earned with his reduced taxes. . Wake up to reality and face what has really happened. ....it is not pretty. --Unfortunately there is a high probability of a large inflation period because of this mess...

  44. --EagleD (above) is exactly right... It went into the General Fund... which funds education. It may have been additional money early on but as time passed they just reduced other taxes so education wound back up exactly where it was.... It just did nothing to help education. Also the state spends a lot more on prisons that it once did as well. ..... which cuts into the amount available in the general fund for education.

  45. ---The Texas testing program is all Texas... and not a Federal deal. I supported the original TABS test [Texas Assessment of Basic Skills, passed about 1976 ] which did just that.. tested basic skills so no one could be graduating illiterates. Since then our politicians (either party) keep making it more difficult and even more crazy and testing odd topics that have little to do with most people's post high school life. They do it just to claim they are improving education.. which in fact is hurting it. Plus it is expensive and diverts money from real education. --- I am no longer in public schools and have not been for 12 years and have no kids in school either... so I have nothing at stake... The State Testing program is awful and harmful to true education. --- As for Perry, he has continually cut state funding which has caused local property taxes to rise... plus college tuition has really skyrocketed under him because of his decline in funding. [ He claimed they allowed colleges to set their own tuition to make them competitive... Bull-crap ... they did it to make up for what he cut from the state college budget in order to for them to survive ] He even vetoed insurance of community college instructors.... and we are very cheap to the state.... since local taxes provide most of the support... He is awful, no governor has been worse for education... college or public schools. ---No child left behind was a Bush deal... not good either... but we in Texas had this testing before he was Governor or President. He was bad for education too but not near as bad as Perry.. He just made the problem in Texas a national problem. --Some want to think it should be used to evaluate teachers... BS. Not every teacher has the same kids with the same ability or background. If OU beats Idaho State this year 31-20, should the Idaho State Coach be fired... his numbers were not as good...... Of course he has a program that was 2-11 last in in a lower division (non-BCS) and would have played a top BCS team. The same applies to education. I want to teach in Plano and not some South Dallas district if the testing is to be a judge of how I am doing. This testing and evaluation is nuts.
