Sunday night recruiting update from Vito

UNT is down to the bitter end in recruiting. There are just a few prospects left out there and only a few scholarships left for UNT to give out.

I mentioned that UNT was playing the waiting game with some key guys.

Here is the latest:

Sherman linebacker Kahlee Woods visited Texas Tech over the weekend, but left the school without a scholarship offer.

Woods said that UNT and Tech are the only schools he is considering. Colorado State and New Mexico are out of the picture.

This could come down to whether or not Louisiana linebacker Edward Williams commits to Texas Tech, Louisiana Tech or maybe even Tulane. Hes a nationally ranked prospect who was committed to Texas A&M before backing out.

If Williams commits to Texas Tech and he told Rivals.com he was leaning that way last week it seems unlikely that Tech would have a spot left for Woods.

I have to chime in and agree with you guys. Who cares if somebody else underestimates you? Make North Texas your home, and show everyone why you deserve to be a first choice. You can excel anywhere if given the chance, but opportunity is the key, and UNT fosters excellence rather than holding it back. If you come to Denton, you will be pushed to exceed even your own expectations, and you will surprise yourself along with everyone else with how much you accomplish and develop in every area, from the field to the weight room to the classroom and beyond. You won't be sorry.

No one asked my opinion but I prefer to sign 3-5 of the best Juco defensive linemen who have not qualified yet where other schools have backed away. Cross your fingers that 2 find a way to graduate in May. Yeah, they wouldn't have gone through spring ball but they should still help more by the middle of the seaon (conference) than a few fall back guys from high school. Tell these high school kids to walk on but stress that there is a very good chance they will end up on scholarship. Maybe not the proper thing to do but hell, we're trying to turn a bad football program around.

That brings up something that I was wondering about. If a player graduates but still has a year of eligibility left (i.e. Patrick Cobbs, etc. where they finished eligibility while pursuing graduate school), does that change the way the scholarships are allocated? What I mean is, as far as paperwork is concerned, are they just continuing seamlessly, or is their financial aid package cycled differently so that it frees up a scholarship in one area and takes up a scholarship in another? A player who redshirts their first season and graduates in 4 years gets an extra year if they enroll for a Master's degree, so are they treated as any other 4th-year player, or does their scholarship package fit into another classification, still a part of the overall maximum but possibly moving things around to free up something for another player? I know we still have a maximum per signing class, but if this is one of the areas where the classification shifts and others (walk-ons, etc) can shift with it, it might be interesting to know about. Yes, this is a nitty-gritty logistics question, but when you're trying to build things up using every detail possible, it's a thought worth considering if there's anything in the NCAA rules about it.
