Kenny Williams---lead nation in rebounding

Fred Mitchell--great forward on Blakely teams

Melvin "Lurch" Davis----ditto

Walter "Weasel" Johnson---best PG I have ever seen at UNT

Jermaine Green was my type of player, he did all the little things that help a team win and hustled his butt off, so he is probably my favorite.

Isaac Hines is heading right up there though, he puts forth the same type of effort from the point guard position. Another season like last year and he will tough for anyone to leave out.

I'll push the pool back a few years earlier and say: the great John Savage, from those bleak early 60s years in the MVC when it was probably the best BB conference in the land -- this 6-5 guy from smalltown Detroit, Texas, was the only player then-NTSU had in those years who could have even made the squad on the Cincys, Bradleys, Drakes, Wichita States, Tulsas, etc. And he never complained about it, just played his heart out every time I saw him. Some 40+ plus years later I still can see him beating St. Louis at the last second, in beloved ol' Men's Gym. Memories like that keep us going.

Best basketball player I have seen at NT was Joe Hamilton. He was all conference in the best basketball league in the country at the time. But my favorate would be Kenneth Lyons. Tough as nails and unless recently broken has the record for scoring in one game in the Southland Conference tournament. Scored 40+ points against La Tech and the Mailman in the tournament after hearing that Karl Malone a freshman at the time was picked over him for MVP of the conference.

Other favorites include Bobby Iverson, Delonte Taylor, Jessie Ratliff, Willie Davis, Leroy Winfield and Chris Davis.

Bobby Iverson was maybe the best athlete to ever attend NT. One of two high school all americans recruited by Coach Gene Robbins to come to NT. Robbins also signed the majority of the players that made Blakely's early years very successful. Blakely inherited Ken Williams, Terry Bailey, Fred Mitchell, Carl Jones and Melvin Davis, all recruited by Robbins. Delonte Taylor was about 6'3 but could jump out the game and also had a mean streak. Jessie Ratliff was one of the best offensive players ever at NT. Willie Davis was all MVC and at 6'8 one of the biggest players NT had in the MVC days. Leroy Winfield at 6'2 jumped center and was one of the few NT players to have an NBA career.

Chris Davis was not only a great player. He had the heart to remain loyal to the school and endure through the Trilli era.

Other player favorites include Adam Smith, Carl Jones, Al Shumate, Tony Worrell, Ep McDaniel, Deon Hunter, Neil Adams, Fred Mitchell, Melvin Davis, Ken Williams, Bill Cutter, Terry Bailey, John Horracks, Ronne Morgan and Wendell Williams.

Lets add Jalie Mitchell and Clara Campbell for the ladys.

The first 'great' player at North Texas was Fred Hopkins. He was a dominant big man at about 6'6". The game was much slower then but it was not uncommon for Bud to score more than half of the team total.

Another name that I don't recall seeing was Jim Mudd. He was probably our best pure scorer ever. We only had him two years (he was all-MVC both of them) and he's probably still in the Top 10 in many categories in our all-time record book.

My favorites: Joe Hamilton, Creston Whitaker, John Savage and Willie Davis. I remember taking Louisville down to the wire in Denton with Willie holding his own against Wes Unseld. One North Texas student in the crowd had a sign that read: "Wes, you can't stuff our Willie".

Still miss the packed Men's Gym rocking and panicing the visiting big boys from Louisville, Cincy and Bradley.

Hard to say really. Probably Chris Davis even though I followed most of his career thru audio broadcasts. Followed Ratliffe thru the radio too. My favorite player while I was actually a student was David Miller because he was all we had for acouple of those seasons. wink.gif
